The circumnavigator Francis Drake has the credit of Introducing the potato to Europe, but the Spaniards had brought it with the tomato from the Andes some time before, and it was es tablished there and in Italy, where they called it tartufoli, long before Sir Wal ter Raleigh shipped his cargo, in 1826, from Virginia to England. According to Humboldt, it has been cultivated in England since 1684, in Saxony since 1728 and since 1738 In Prussia. A Warning to Mothers. Too much care cannot be used with small children during the hot weather of the summer months to guard ageinst bowel troubles. As a rule it is only necessary to give the child a dose of castor oil to correct any disorder of the bowels. Do not use any substitute, but give the old-fashioned castor oil, and see that it is fresh, as rancid oil nauseates and has a tendency to gripe. If this does not check the bowels give Chamberlain's Colic, Cholera and Diarrhoea Remedy and then a dose of castor oil, and the disease may be checked in its incipiency and all dan ger avoided. The castor oil and this remedy should be procured at onve and kept ready for instant use as soon as the first indication of any bowel trouble appears. T An rdinance:C To Provide for the Assessment and Collection of Taxes on All Taxable Property in the Town of Manning, and for the Assessment and Collee tion of a Per Capita 'Tax in Lieu of Working the SLteets of said Town. for the Fiscal Year Commencing the Second Monday in April. 190~>, and Ending the Second Monday in April, 190G. BE IT ORDAINED by the Mayor and Aldermen of the Town of Manning, in council assembled, and by the author ity of the same: SECTION 1. That a tax of two mills on every dollar. of the assessed value of all real and personal property lying or being within the corporate limits of the Town of Manning, including bonds cnd stocks of banks and other corpora tions, and the tross income of insurance companies doing business in the said town, except such property as is exempt by law from taxation, be, and the same is, hereby, levied for the fiscal year commencing the second Monday in April, 1905, and ending the second Moiday in April, 1906. SEC. 2. That it shall be the duty of all persons, firms or corporations a i. ing or having under their control any property subject to taxation under this ordinance, to list the same with the clerk of council not later than Septem ber 20, 1905, and upon the failure of any person or persons, firm or corpora tion to list the said property, it shall be the duty of said clerk of council to enter up against said person or persons, firm or corporation a list of the said property for taxation as the same shall be found to appear from the office of the County Auditor for Clarendon county. SEC. 3. That a commutation tax of two dollars per capita on all persons liable to work on the streets of said town for the fiscal year above men tioned, in lieu of working on said streets, be, and the 5me is, hereby levied, which said commutation tax shall become due and payable when other town taxes are payble. All able bodied male persons between the ages of eighteen (18) and fifty (50) years, not otherwise exempt, are liable to the said tax: and all persons who shall be living within the corporate limits of the said town up to the close of the fiscal year ending the second Monday in April, 1906, shall become liable to the said tax within thirty days after the said persons shall bgin living in the said town, unless the said person or persons can show satisfactory evidence of hav ing performed road duty or duty upon the streets of some other town or city, or produce a receipt for payment of a commutation tax in lieu thereof. cov ing the majority part of the fiscal year included in this ordinance. SEC. 4. That all taxes levied under the provisions of this ordinance shall become due and payable to the clerk of the town council of Manning be tween October first, 1905, and Novem_ ber fifteenth, 1905. That if the said taxes are not paid on or before the said fifteenth day of November, 1905, a penalty of ten per cent. shall be added until the fif teenth day of December, 1905, after which last mentioned date the collec tion of the said taxes and penalties shall be enforced by execution.
