The railroad depot at this place was entered last night, and burglars suc ceeded in damaging the safe, and steal ing 40 cents in pennies. There will be a Christmas tree at the Grange Hall Wednesday evening at 7 o'clock, December 21. Refreshments will be served for the benefit of the school. Landsin this county are being posted right along, so as to prevent the pro miscuous hunting. especially by those who come here to hunt birds for ship ment. -The roman candle nuisance has al ready begun among the little shavers, who'nightly engage in the dangerous play of shooting each other with these fire balls. An immense wild cat was cut in two last Monday night by the freight train at Black River. The "varmint" was being shown around the town yester day ?y some little boys. A full attendance of the membership is desired at the Methodist churchi next Sunday morning-the last before Con ference. At this service business of importance will be brought before the church. Clerk of Court J. H. Timmons, ac companied by Dr. W. M. Brockinton, left yesterday for Johns Hfopkin's San itarium in Baltimore, where Mr. Tim mons expects to undergo a surgical operation. Mr. R. E. McFaddin of Sardinia, one of our county commissioners, although slightly disfig'ured from his recent run away accident, is still in the ring, and was able to attend the meeting of the board last Saturday. Our stores are beginning to put on their holiday look already, fireworks, toys and all those things to make the young and old happy are here. The shon windows are real enticing, regard less of the price of cotton. Died at his home at Providence, Capt..P. P. Gaillard aged about 62 ears. Captain Gaillard was one~of the [eaders in Sumter county in her trying days. He was a brother of Mr. W. H. Gailard of Dullant this county. During the Christmas holidays the young gallants are going to have a grand tournamient at which there will be the best riders in this and adjoinig -counties. The affair is to be conducted on a grand scale and everything will be done to make it a memorable occasion. Mr. Henry Appelt of Darlington who spent last week in M'anning with his brother's family left last Sunday night. While here he met a number of his comrades, with whom he was in h.Cuba, which made his visit so pleasant that he will put Manning on his regu 1ar route and come here often. There is in contemplation the build ing of an electric railroad from Wright's Bluff to St. Paul, through Summerton to Manning. The projectors of this scheme believe such a road wil add greatly to the development of the section through which it will go, and afford freight competition with the Coast Line. Walter Burgess of Sandy Grove, the young man we mentioned in our last issue as having accidentally shot him self in the leg while hunting on Thanks giving day, died last Wednesday, He was a son of the late Samuel Burgess, and the sole dependence of his mother and Sisters, about 18 years of age and of exemplary character. The Ariel Ladie's Quartet Company, gave a performance here last evening which was a rare treat. Miss McKen zie's recitals were indeed charming, and Miss Leavitt's violin execution was an exhibition of a high order of musical talent. These ladies are indeed enter taining to the refined and cultured, and we hope they will again appear in Man The property in Manning is being sold for such high prices that it will not be long before those wishing to live here will be forced to seek the suburbs. We are not altogether sure if it is to the future welfare of the town to hold property at the present prices, because the ground is too high to encourage the building of houses to rent, and un less there are houses built for rent, the town will progress slowly. Sold by Dr. V E.Brown & Co. On last Saturday, Mr. Sanders gave an exhibition on the Presbyterian church lot of his building material to take the place of brick. He made a mixture of sand and cement, placed it in moulds and turned out blocks, which when hardened resembled stone. This same material is being used for the Baker Infirmary in Sumter, and it is also being used-for the Capers & Co. druz store at Snmmerton. The purpose of this exhibition was to give the com mittee having in charge the building of the new Presbyterian church an op portunity to see the material. and from what we can learn they are well pleased with it. M. Mason, D. M. Bradham and W. J. Muldrow. The day fixed for this event is December 29th. The entrance fee is 33. The prizes will be bridle, saddle and spurs to the winner of first prize. The application committee is W. C. Davis. A Levi, and Charlton DuRant. All Knights desiring so participate must make application to the commit tee, and those accepted will be required to appear in shirtwaist, sash and cocked hat with ornament. Thecommittees are anxious to make this a big success, and they urge the co-operation of the pub lic, especially in attendance. Mothers Be Careful of the health of your children. The tremendous slum in cotton has had a very demoralizing effect upon the farmers, and business generally. The government report shows, a crop of 12,225,000 bales, about 8000,000 bales already marketed. It is estimated that the world's consumption is about 12, 000,000 bales, and now that the crop of this year exceeds the world's sup ply it is very doubtful if we shall real ize our hopes of stronger prices. There are many persons who have held large quantities of cotton, and these lose heavily by the falling of prices. The cotton goods market has already weak ened, and this is an indication that higher prices for the staple need not be looked for. A Certain Cure for Croup. When a child shows symptoms of croup there is no time to experiment with new remedies, no matter how highly they may be recommended. There is one preparation that can al gways be depended upon. Loryea Drug Store. . Last Saturday on the plantation of Mr. H. S. Briggs, Ed Mackey, a negro, killed Dave Connors, and seriously wounded Lynton Butler, both the dead man and the wounded man are negroes. Mackey first drew his gun on Arthur, one of' Mr. H. S. Briggs' sons, and asked him for tobacheo. Young Briggs told him to put down his gun, where upon Mackey asked him for money, and Connors remonstrated with him,and he turned around and fired a load into Connors. Butler started to run, and was shot in the arm. Mackey went off and told some people he intended to kill his wife and baby, but he could not find them. He then escaped into the woods. The shooting was altogether unprovoked, and some think Mackey crazy. To Cure a Cough. The coughs so prevalent these days usually develop before you realize what has happened. The meeting of farmers yesterday was attended by a small body of repre sentative farmers. Rev. R. A. Sublett addressed the body and made clear his plan for the proposed organization. The purpose being to have an organi zation throughout the entire cotton belt and on tomorrow evening a State organization would be effected at Co lumbia, to which he wanted this coun ty to send representatives. The plan is to organize every township into clubs, to be subordinate to the State organi zation, whereby the cotton can be con trolled and marketed. Wherever 10, OP bales con be concentrated, a ware house is to be built, owned and control led by the cotton growers; to raise the funds for the building of these ware houses, each member to be assessed $1. for every bale of cotton he makes, and the whole management of market ing is to be governed by a board of directors, chosen at a State convention made up of representatives from the local clubs. The county organization to report quantity and grade of cotton stored, to the State agent, who will come in direct touch with the mills and exporters. After the matter was discussed by Messrs. Sublett, Hodge, and others, an organization was ef fected by making Mr. E. D. Hodge temporary chairman, and electing as delegates to Columbia. Messrs. R. A. Sublett. 0. C. Scarborough, J. J. Epps, and S. H. Bradham. When the dele gates return from Columbia the chair man of the delegation will call another meeting for a permanent organization.
