Walter Ryttenberg the 16 year old
son of the late Harry Ryttenberg, died
last Monday in Sumter from the effects
of injuries received from being thrown
from a horse a few week ago.
The telephone connection between
here and Sumter has been out of gear
for several days, caused we are told, on
account of a clash between the county
authorities and the telephone company.
Capt. George T. Alford the old rail
road conductor, and later the hotel
man died at his home in Charlestor
last Sunday. Captain Alford was well
known to the older people of this sec
tion.

Two young ladies circulated a peti
tion in Manning iat Saturday solicit
t ing signatures to a petion in the inter
. est of the Hepburn-Dolliver bills now
before Congress. Of course. very few
refused to sign. not that they were
acquainted with the nature of the
Hepburn-Dolliver bills, but they signed
because requested by two sweet young
ladies. The Hepburn-Dolliver bills
seek to give the States power to seize
liquor in transit in prohibition States,
even if shipped for private use.

The best performance yet given un
der the auspices of the Lyceum was
last evening at the Institute hall by the
Wells-Greenawalt Swiss Bell Ringers
and The Asetceam Trio. It was a mus
ical entertainment, and each number
was sincerely applauded. The company
of two ladies and three gentlemen are
artists of high order, and the novel
performance with the bells, banjos.
mandolins, saxophone, piano and xylo
phones was indeed a revelation to many
who had never seen a simular perform
ance. Mr. Haves Greenawalt's dram
atic rendition of "The Soul of the Vio
lin" was a fine piece of elocution, and
Mr. Clarence Greenawait's chalk draw
ings, accompanying the rendition of
"Awaiting fer the Train to Come in"
created much ierriment. The entire
performance was good, an exhibition
of refined art. .

The knee breeches gallants gave the
"I-am-sweet" young ladies of the town
a delightful social last Friday evening
which was immensely enjoyed, and won
for the little gentlemen many real nice
compliments that may stand them in
good stead later on with the young la
dies little sisters. These boys did the
entertaining elegantly and gracefully,
quite a contrast to the party of chicken
eaters at the oil mill who sat around a
pot of boiling chicken like so many
tramps around a camp fire. The big
fellows thought they enjoyed them-;
selves, but they didn't. The little
gents went to the party with a sweet
young lady hanging on their arm, con
versing about the weather, the stars.
and other resourceful things to talk
about. while the big fellows sneaked off
by themselves with a chicken under
their coats, which~would squeak every
time the arm grip was loosened, and
cause nassers by to susp~ect they came
from a place whiere the was no "lock on
the chicken house door."

Millinery Department...
Our buyer, Miss Bagnal, is now in the Northern markets
buying our Millinery stock for the opening season. She will re
turn with a new trimmer from Baltimore. Our Mrs. Beulah M.
Dinkins is here in charge and is ready and eager for the season.
Suffice it to say that we propose to make this the greatest season
in Millinery we have ever had.
We opened up our Millinery department when no one kept
I Millinery here; it was an absolute necessity for the upbuilding
of the town. We have succeeded in building up a large business
and we don't propose to give'it up, so ladies when you come to
get that Easter hat don't be talked into buying until ybu see
what we have to show you.
In conclusion we want to say to all of our friends and pat
