Daisy Follin in Charleston.
Hon. J. H. Lesesne left yesterday for
Columbia to attend the legislature.
Miss Maud Pack, of Greenville, is in

Chief Justice Henry MeIver died at
his home in Cheraw last Monday, at
the of 76 years.
Miss Annie Wilson of Rome is in
Manning on a visit to her brother, So
licitor J. S. Wilson.
The bank at Kingstree made last year
a clear profit of 18 per cent. This is a
tine showing for a young bank.
We have heard the sermon preached
by Rev. A. N. Brunson last Sunday
night, spoken of in high commenda
tion.
Dr. John C. Boyd assistant surgeon
general of the navy has been visiting
his brother Dr. I. N. Boyd near Greel
eyville.
Mr. W. M. Dye, of the U. S. mail
service running between Charleston
and Jacksonville was in Manning last
Monday.
'News came to Manning Monday
morning of the desperate illness of Mr.
S. M. Nexsen near Davis, and today we
learn his condition is no better.
Don't fail to read Jenkinson's Red
Letter Sale ad., in this issue. He is
offering prices to astound the natives,
and to unearth hidden treasure.
Mr. Walter Johnson has accepted a
sition in the store of Mr. M. Krasnoff.
Mr. Johnson is a valuable man in a
store and he has friends all over the
county, and they say one in Georgia.
Manning needs a building and loan
association, which will extend its busi
ness throughout the county. These
are the institutions which aid greatly
in ading to the development of a com
munity.
Mr. Itly Wilson of Rome in Wil
liamsburg county was in Manning last
Thursday on a visit to his brother
Solicitor~ John S. Wilson. Itly is al
ways welcome in Manning where he
used to go to school.
Mr. Ben H. Harvin has been appoint
ed private secretary to Congressman
elect George S. Legare. This appoint
ment is merited. Mr. Harvin worked
faithfully for Mr. Legare, and besides
he is a tihoroughly competent man, in
tellio'ent and courteous, and always a
gentleman.
The store of Robert DuRant, colored,
in Salem near Hudson's mill was bur
glarized last Wednesday night, and two
of his fellow citizens Ben Tomlinson
and Baker Rush are now languishing
in the county jail awaiting are inves
tigation to show cause why they should
not go on the chaingang.
A change of schedule on the A. C. L.
went into effect last MAonday, which
only effects the morning train. The
train leaves Charleston 6:20 a. m. and
arrives in Manning 8:43 This necessi
tates a change in closing the morning
mail at the postoffice. The mail leaves
the office now at 8:15 a. mi.
The correspondent of the Columbia
State from this place in last Sunday's
issue virtually decided the child labor
question, so far as he is concerned,
without waiting to hear the arguments
against the measure. If all of the
members of the legislature is like this
one, argument and reasoning would be
wasted.
The legislature conyvened yesterday
and as soon as it begins working we
will try to keep up with it, and give to
our readers each weeik a fair and im
partial review of the work. We shall
also presume to make such suggestions
as seem to us fit, and we shall criticise
that which we do not approve, always
however in a spirit of fairness.
The .legislature met yesterday and
from the published proceedings we find
the senate has annouced Hon. C. M.
Davis on the following committees,
contingent accounts, engrossed bills,
and prencing of which committee he is
chiairman. The House has not as yet
announce<Yits committees. Hon. M. L.
Smith of Camden was elected Speaker
and Col. T. C. Hamer clerk. The
death of Chief Justice Mclver was. for
merly announced through a special
message from the Governor, and in re
spect to the memory of the distinguish-,
ed jurist an adjournment was taken.
Last Monday night a large audience
greeted Mr. Franklin P'eake, who came
here under the auspices of the Alka
hest Lyceum. Mr. Peake labored un
der severe disadvantages. It was a
very cold night and the management
failed to heat'the hall, and from the'
back of the stage there was a constant
draft of icy air that kept the enter
tainer in a struggle to keep himself
warm, thus compelling the audience too,
in a large measure, to get as much
warmth for themselves as they could.
Mr. Peake is a fair story teller, and a
better elocutionist. His rendition of
the story of Damon and Pythias was
very good. His impersonations of dif
ferent characters-schoolboy and back
woods swain-well, the hall was so cold
the audience did not appreciate it.
Puggy's accomnpaniament to his classic
song recital brought dowvn the house,
and the gentleman from Alcolu kept it
constantly coming down. We sincerely
hope the~ local management of the ly
ceum will have more consideration for
the comfort of those who pay their
2noney to be entertained.
Since our last issue several have ask
ed us about the new bank we refered
to, and we also received a couple of
letters regarding it, and lest there may
be a misunderstanding, we will state
that we based our comment entirely
upon information furnished us by some
who are endeavoring to start another
bank in this town. So far as we are
concerned we have no complaint
against the present bank, and we are
not aware of any other complaint than
which we alluded to in our last issue,
with regard to a feeling of giving busi
ness competitors the advantage of an
insight to what should be individual
business secrets. The present bank is
well officered, and 'is making big mon
ey, the question is, would two banks
make monevy I! so, then there is room
for another, and two would have a ten
dency to expand the banking business.
this town would be useless unless, by
having two, the cost of obtaining loans
would be cheapened in the way of in
terest or fees, and unless money can be
procured cheaper, competition will be
of no benefit. The people are not in
terested in dividing the patronage of
banks, what they want is for banks to
sell their money as cheaply as possible.
We believe money ought to be obtained
at a less rate of interest, it is so obtain
ed at other places, and it ought to be
here. The prevailing rate here is 8 per
cent discount, then when fees are added.
the borrower is doing well if he gets
his money at a cost of ten per centmon
ey is borrowed in some places at six
per cent, and at the North as low as
four, why is this so? Because money is
plAntiful and competition is active. If
we had as active competition in the
money market here as we have in the
mereintile, the owners of money would
be as satisfied with smaller profits as
the merchants are compelled to be.
Therefore we say there is absolutely
no need here for another bank, unless
those who are contemplating such a
movement propose to reduce interest
and fees, and it would be almost im
oossible to raise another bank in this
town without having parties connected
with it who are situated similar to those
in the existing bank.
Unconscious From Croup.
During a sudden and terrible at
tack of croup our little girl was un
conscious from strangulation, says
A. L. Spafford, postmaster, Chester,
Mich., and a dose of One Minute
Cough Cure was administered and
repeated often. It reduced the swel
ling and inflammation, cut the mu
cus and shortly the child was resting
easy and speedily recovered. It
cures coughs, colds, la grippe, and
all throat and lung troubles. One
Minute Cough Cure lingers in the
throat and chest and enables the
lungs to contribute pure, health-giv
ing oxygen to the blood. The R. B.

--- 4.
We are informed that an editorial in
this paper on the subject of railroads
so impressed a man of means in this
town, that he said he was willing to
pledge five miles of the road himself.
Here you are business men, can you get
together for your own good, or do you
expect to trust to luck? Has Manning
any public spirited citizens at all?
Then why do they dot try and do some
thing for the betterment of the com
munity? We do not regard those pub
ic spirited, who pull together for their
own selfish ends, for instance, where
one or more persons join to do some
thing which can only benefit them,
matters not how much they invest, the
whole benefit goes to them, but where
persons join in an enterprise which will
develope the community, bring new
people, and labor providing institutions
they are what we call public spirited
citizens, having the community's wel
fare as well as their own at heart.
Manning can, if it will unshackle
herself from railroad monoply, and se
cure the advantages competing towns
have obtained to our cost. In a former
issue we outlined a railroad route for
onsideration, and now we have an
other which is worth considering, but
onsideratlons amount to nothing, if
the men who should do something are
going to wait for a freshet to float pro
ress up to their doors.
A connecting line with the Southern
at Levi's siding or Manchester _is
horoughly practicable, within a dis
ance of 20 miles, and a connecting line
with the Seaboard Air Line at Camden
s also practicable within a distance of
30 miles. In our opinion, if our mer
hants and other business men will
rasp the opportunity now, and take
old of either of these roads, with a
etermination to do business, the cork
n the bottle now holding our business
nterests and keeping us from spread
ing will be pulled in short order. Think
f it, an opening 20 miles from us in a
otton growing direction, and another
0 miles from us in a tobacco and cot
ton direction. If we can get the Sea
ord to come this way, it will either go
o Georgetown to seek shipping by
ater, or go to Charleston, where it
has been wanting to go for a long time,
ma it will get there sooner or later; it
is for us to say, are we going to offer in
ucements to get them to come here?
