Flagg of Wilson and Mrs. A. T. Wilson of Foreston. t If some one don't send usi a string of birds soon we will lose faith in telling dreams before breakfast. There will be a hot supper at Mr. J. H. Garland's next Friday night for the benefit of the Sardinia school. A little son of Mr. Jehu Smith of < Turbeville got one of his legs broke< last Thursday by falling from a piazza. A large bunch of keys was found in the public road by Mr. W. I. Hudnal, who would like the owner to call for them. The people of Sardinia saw the fall ing of a meteor last Saturday night, and it gave a man living on Mr. W. T. Rose's place a bad cold. -The New Zion school is wanting a3 teacher to take the place of Miss Lee, of Summerville who has been released to accept a scholarship in a college. At an entertainment at Panola last Friday evening a cake was voted for the most popular lady, and, it was awarded to Miss Geiger, and brought $27.50.1 Cards are out announcing the mar riage of Mr. Ashley Avant of.Summer ton, and Miss Annie Harvin of this place, at the Presbyterian church 26th, inst at 6 o'clock p. m. Died yesterday morning at New Zion, Anderson Fleming, son of Mr. R.. S. 1 Fleming, aged about 18 years. This is the second son Mr. Fleming has lost recently. We extend to him our sin cere sympathy. By special request of the ladies of the W. C. T. U., the pastor of the Metho dist church will preach a sermon on Temperance on next Sunday mornmo~ at 11:30 o'clock, a. m. This is thed, set apart as National Temperance Day. Mr. W. S. Harvin has obtained a grant from the town to put in an elec tric light plant, to furnish lights for the stores and private dwellings. We hope he will begin operations soon, with the project in Mr. Harvin's hands it will succeed. Sumter is getting jealous of Manning, and is now trying to get a tobacco warehouse built. The more houses the better, but Sumter will never see the - ~day when shewill beas good a tobac co market as Manning; the reason is, our people are the tobacco makers. Dr. A. D. Epps of Gredleyville, has: made a correct diagnosis of our ail- 1 ment without a personal examination- 4 by the long distance mental telegraphy process. He sent to us for our con sumption a German carp which he caught in Santee yesterday, and which weighed when cleaned 13i pounds, and considerably less after dinner today. Krasnoff has struck a "New Idea" sure enough. He recently took a little trip and combining business with pleas ure, struck up with a bankrupt stock of gold mounted french briar root pipes with genuine amber stems--they are very pretty and as cheap as dirt. A lady can present her husband with one of these for little money, and at the same time, be getting something which will please him, if he is a smoker. Last night while strolling about looking for something to pick up, we dropped in at the Manning Grocery Company's store, and there saw a crowd feasting their eyes upon a lot of 5b fruit cakes, Captain Bagnal dis covering our anxious looks, and rather than run the chances of having to ap pear in court acrainst us, he handed us one of these Etelicious cakes, with his compliments. This is the first time "we took the cake"~ with the proprie tor lookinst square at us. We carried it home and our tribe lay awake quite late smacking their mouths in antici atin of thnksgciving day. Died last Saturday night at his home iear New Zion, Mr. J. W. Fleming rged about 70 years. The funeral took )lace Sunday at Midway church. The leceased was a man of prominence in iis community, and for years he was a rial justice, and regard one of the best n the county. Mr. Fleming is a vet ran of the civil war, and always took a ive interest in the affairs of his com nunity. We notice in Von Ostrand's adver isements a place in Clarendon county or sale. Von Ostrand is the largest eal estate agent in the United States ith headquarters in New York city. Ie advertises in all of the leading me ropolitan newspapers and magazines. Lhe place referred to is in Fulton town hip and belongs to Hon. H. B. Rich Lrdson, who we hear is contemplating hanging his residence to Camden. The 'ecture at Panola Academy last riday evening was delivered by that enerable and distinguished man of 3od, Dr. Hacher of Atlanta, Ga., Dr. 3. C. Brown being unwilling to absent iimself from the prayermeeting at his :hurch that evening. The lecturer ook for his subject the three cardinal irtues honesty, sobriety, and industry, Ld such a forceful appeal to young nen to make a success of life, which he aid was based upon these three things, s seldom heard. In addition to these, aid the speaker, boys be Christians, tnd you can attain the highest degree >f human perfection. The other part >f the program was quite a success .so. About $35.00 net profit was rea ized. We hope the present board of county ommissioners will not lose sight of the act that a new road from Salem to anning is much desired, by the peo le of Salem as well as the people of anning. Before the primary, such road was promised, and we sincerely Lope it was not simply a promise to catch he Salem voter, with no intention to ulfill it. The road as promised before he election was a distance shortner to he court house and calculated, if the ad is built as it should be, to turn rade in this direction, and it is the uty of our officers to build roads which re for the public benefit. We call pon our commissioners to take up the ;alem road matter at their next meet ng, so that the road can be completed nd in good traveling condition before he next tobacco crop is made. A young man from Davis, recently rent to Sumter, bought some goods rom D. J. Chandler, gave a check aable to "J. H. Bell," and signed '. M. Nexsen." Mr. Chandler gave he young man the money for the dif erence in his purchase and the amount f the check, and in the due course of usiness the check was deposited in the ank; the bank in Sumter sent the heck to the Manning bank, and the ashier noticing something peculiar bout the signature, telephoned Mr. exsen who replied he had given no 1 uch check, and that it was a forgery. A I rarrant was issued in Sumter for B. M. 3ell, and he was arrested at St. stephens last night and t'aken to Sum- ( er this morning. The amount of the heck is $96.00, and if Bell is convicted, i e will go to the penetentiary for a I erm of years. 1 How To Prevent Croup. We believe if the merchants of this town will get together, they can induce, both the North Western, and the Al derman railroads to come to MIanning. These two roads coming here from op posite directions would bring a great deal of trade here which does not come here now, we cannot say they would add anything by way of freight com petition, but there is no doubt they would run such schedules as to open up the market here to some of the best points in the county. If we can induce these two roads to come here our cot ton receipts will be much larger. which would invite more buyers, thus brine ing about active competition, and re sulting in better prices, and with these increased facilicies will come industri l enterprises, more population, and a eneral addition to the value of pro erty not alone here, but all over the ounty. Our merchants can do a great leal 'towards pushing this town for 6vard; we have the country, and what ve need is the development of it. Both Captains Thomas Wilson, and D. W. Alderman, are live, progressive business men, and their past record how them to be men open for business >ropositions. Now, if we have men ere who will meet them half way and ;how them the wisdom of the invest ment we are satisfied both roads will e running into Manning within ;welve months. Our town council can o much on this line, the Intendant ;hould call a meeting of the business en, and some proposition should be nade looking towards the inducing of hese roads here, we will never get mnything if we do not ask for it. A Timely Suggestion. This ie the season of the year when the prudent and careful housewife replenishes her supply of Chamber ain's Cough Remedy. It is certain :o be needed before the winter is >ver, and results are much more >rompt and satisfactory when it is iept at hand and given as soon as :he cold is contracted and before it ias become settled in the system. In Limost every instance a severe cold nay be warded off by taking this -emedy freely as soon as the first in lication of the cold appears. There s no danger in giving it to children 'or it contains no harmful substance. t Is pleasant to take-both adults Lnd children like it. Buy it and you vill get the best. It always cures.
