He is now a citizen of our town where he proposes to work at the carpenters trade. Mr. Reardona is a first class mechanic. Shattuck of Shelisburog, Iowa, w'as cured of a stomach trouble with which he had been afflicted for years, by four boxes of Chamberlain's Liver Tablets. A new hardware store in Manning is the latest among the business enter prises. Mr. James F. Dickson has opened up in one of the new stores erected by the Levi estate and he pro poses to ~keep everything that a first class hardware store should. Mr. Dick -son is a very worthy young man, known to the people, and he has had several years experience in the hardware bus iness. Mr. Henry Burgess and Miss Dee Bradley were married Wednesday night at the residence of the bride's father, Judge I. W. Bradley, at Mayes ville. The couples in attendance were Mr. Copely Burgess and Miss Dayse Bradley, Mr. Jas. Bradley and Miss Cles Burgess, Mr. Alex Montgomery and Miss Emma Mayes, Mr. C. D. Cooper and Miss Lina Shaw. The hap py couple left for the home of the groom's father, Mr. Jim Burgess, at Foreston, where they expect to stay some time. Mr. Sam Graham came to Manning last Monday, and was very indignant because no arrest had been made of Junius Dickson, a negro whom Miss C. A. Graham, his daughter, had sworn out a warrant for, on the charge of violating contract,. Magistrate You had turned over the warrant for exe cution to the sheriff on July 31st.. anc so far as he was concerned his duty wa performed. Miss Graham saw Dicksor in her father's field with a gun in hi hands after the warrant was issued and he very insolently refused to givt the path for her to pass. Mr. Gra ham was confined to his bed at the time or there would have been trouble. The negro has i ot beeu arrested yet. anc has with hi.n the keys to the house that he was living in: about thre( weeks ago he shot Calvin Hammet1 another negro, and he is regarded t very bad fellow. Mr. Graham is ver. much incensed, at what he regards in difference on the part of the aut'o'ri ties, and says he has appeafled to hi attorney, and instructed him to se( whether or not officers of the law car not be forced to do their duty as tax pavers have a right to expect, and i: there is any redress for citizens whc seek protection from the law and can not get it from those charged with the enforcement of the law. He propose: to push this matter, because he feel: that the sheriff has been derelict, anc by this indifference, it might be the cause of his having to take into his owr hands the means of that protection which he has a right to expect from-the sheriff, who is being well paid by the taxpayers of the county. Mr. Grahan further says, no attempt had been mad; to arrest Dickson up to last Friday. Dickson he says, left his place on las1 Friday, went over to the Youman: place, broke into Van Hardy's hous and stole the rations, and is now said t< be at Peter Monroe's on the Wither spoon place where it is reported tha1 he says he dares anybody, white or black to arrest him. The Summer School Reception. The citizens of Manning, aided by a number of public-spirited ladies, ten dered to the teachers attending the summer school a reception last Wed nesday evening at the residence of Mr. and Mrs. C. R. Harvin. Nine o'clock was the hour set, in the invitation, and many an anxious look went skyward as the thunders rolled overhead and the lightning in all man nerof shapes shot through the depress ed atmosphere. Sigh after sigh with the hope that no rain would come, the hour was approaching and the decora tions in the yard and on the house were lighted up. The scene was beautiful: over the door as you entered was a crescent-shaped transparency with the word "Welcome' blazing from it. The entire front of the residence was festooned with varied colored Japan ese lanterns, and these same pretty decorations were dangling among the majestic oaks in the front yard. Under the trees chairs and settees were ar ranged for the tete-a-tetes. When the lanterns were lighted and the windows and doors thrown open the scene pre sented was a brilliant one. The crowds gathered, about 200 ir number, but were not permitted long to look upon the entrancing scene with out: the young folks had their disap poinments in g'reat big bunches. T b thunder rolled nearer and more omi nous, and notwithstanding the oft re peated wish for the lowering clouds t< roll by, there came up a most drench ing rain and ran everybody into the hose and destroyed the illuminations. Within, there was mirth, music and merriment. Professor Shoemaker with violin, accompanied by Miss Tiecher with piano, mingled the sweetest o1 music with the sounds of voices. Lit tle girls fhtted about serving' cream, sherbet and cake: young ladies and gentlemen chatted, that is some o1 them: there were others in corners for getful of the presence of others, and seemed to think the world was made u1] for them alone. The married ladie: kept their eyes well directed on theil "hubbies," for there are few womer that will trust a husband among a drove of pretty teachers, they fear the pool fellow, not being able to care for him self, might get hurt; that is the excuse given to us when we wanted to knov why we wer~e being watche~l and fol lowed. The married men -looked ir upon the enlivening scene chewing toothpicks and grinning, but they en joyed themselves alright waiting to es cort the wife and little ones home. As soon as the guests arrived thi writer, in behalf of the citizens and the hostess, extend'ed greetings and intro duced Hon. J. H. Lesesne, who made very neat and appropriate speech o welcome, after which there was a gen era] minigling of the guests, and al went as happy as a marriage bell. -Ms Virginia Galluchat favored th4 company with several vocal selections and Mrs. Shoemaker charmed us wit] one of her recitations. It was a very enjoyable occasion ani one which is highly appreciated by thi teachers. They feel honored by th< attention and courtesy shown them anc they shall always have a soft spot it their hearts for the people of Manning The reception was a grand success and the ladies who managed the affaii deserve much praise. The executive committee at its re cent meeting appointed itself a commit tee to receive the State candidates or the 20th. We suppose they will weal badges and step high. D. W. Alderman & Sons Co., throug] Mr. E. D. Hodge, offered to carry fre< of charge on their railroad all of thi county candidates going to New Zior on the 15th inst., Hon. J. E. Tindal eulogized in elo quent terms the late General Wadi Hampton, and a committee of three a each club was appointed to solicit con tributions for a monument. The committee decided that candi dates, and guards for the chaingang shall not have any special privileges ii the coming primary and must vot< where their names are enrolled. The county chairman will deliver th< boxes to managers on the 20th. Ther< should be no hitch about getting th< election boxes. The managers mus see that one of their number come fo: them. Tell your friends to tu.rn out on the 26th, and vote for their choice, and pa no attention whatever to reports whether by telephone or toted aroun< the county by some hireling.
