The rumor which reached us was to the effect that Major Richardson was undecided whether he would continue for the Senate or run or the House, that he wanted to con- 1 sult his friends before reaching a con-) :lusion. We had not heard that he< bad withdrawn altogether. B. Loryea Drug Store. A convict lost his life on the chain gang by attempting to escape last Wed esday near the Dutfy store. Mr. Dave Way the guard, was by himself in harge of the gang, and Bossie Hanks, convicted and sentenced to a term of five years for cow stealing, all at once threw down his shove) and walked off, saying he wvas gone. Mr. Way could not leave the gang, fearing it was a1 plot for a general stampede. He or dered Hanks several times to stop, but1 Hanks kept on going. Even the other convits called to Hanks to stop, but he I would not, and when Mr. Way saw that is prisoner was determined to escape, he fired and killed him. An inquest wasI held and the jury rendered a verdict of justifiable homicide. Acts Immediately. As told us. it was as follows: A certain official who is exercising him self to a considerable extent for a can didate running in opposition to us. brought forth from his trousers p)ocket dollar and gave it to a man who is also working for his candidate with in structions to go and buy dinners for himself and his three companions. The man took the dollar, but only two of his companions would join him: the third refused and plainly gave his reasons. Later we heard the party who refused say that the man who had the dollar only paid 30 cents for the three dinners andi came out on the transaction 70 cents ahead, and he is not certain4 whether or niot the restaurant beef and4 rice made any votes or not, but he did The Teachers' Institute. I ,m glad that there is such a move in I ontemplation for it is a movement rhich appeals to the common sense of hinking people who are interested in he upbuilding and promotion of the 1 ounty's interests. This new road will bring to our coun- 1 y seat a very desirable trade-a people ] rho are money-makers: they can reach 1 his place by several miles nearer than .n other market, and by building a irst class road it will be an inducement or them to turn in our direction. What you say about contributions for he building of this road by the busi tess men in Manning is very forceful. Every property owner should contrib tte to this end. While it is true the hole county will be benefited by the ipbuilding of our county seat, Manning ill be the direct beneficiary and hould be foremost in the building of his road. I do not know what the cost of the oad will be, but as a business man, do ng all in my power to draw trade to danning, I am so impressed with the isdom of your suggestions that I offer o contribute as my share towards the uilding of this road the sum of $50.
