As soon as the convention adjourned Ast Monday, a number of the school trustees met and authorized a commit tee consisting of Messrs. W. D. Gamble, E. D. Hodge and Louis Appelt. to com municate with the railroad authorities and if possible charter a train for the school; children's trip to Charleston. The l'etter went off Monday evening and as soon as we get a reply the pub lic will be informed. This is a very important matter which should re ceive the immediate attention of the Commissioners. The tobacco industry is a large one in this county, and good roads will add greatly towards bring ing the product here. We hope the Commissioners will put the chaingang to work on these roads immediately and thus lend a great force towards aiding our tobacco market. Mr. R. D. Clark who was circulating this petition is making every effort to induce the farmers here with their product, and if he succeeds every branch of business will be greatly benefitted. County chairman called the body to or der about noon last Monday and he was made temporary and afterwards per manent chairman, with Major A. J. Richbourg, secretary. Woods insisted on a com mittee on credentials being appointed in order to ascertain the status of the convention, which was very evidently overloaded or packed, for, from the list of enro:.led delegates there appear ed 100 delegates, a representation of 2500 voters when in fact the vo-:es in the county will not exceed 1600, and 64 delegates in a convention. This con tention brought about a flood of motions which the chair seemed at a loss to know what to do, finally after a nunber of speeches from Dr. Woods, Mr. Gal luchat, Capt. D. J. Bradham and Mr. Hodge a motion was adopted to seat the delegates as reported, notwith standing it was plain that about 1000 more voters was represented than the county contained. The vote for couinty chairman result as follows: J. Elber-t Davis, 57; Jos. Sprott, 40; W. C. Davis, 3. The vote for State executive committee was W. C. Davis, 68: Louis Appelt, 32. A number of persons were -iominated for this position, but after the -.ithdrawals the two voted for were le't. The excitement ran- l'igh when it came to the election of delegates to the State convention. Caltein W. C. Davis nominated a full ticket and this was objected to by Mr. Galluchat - ' charged that the ticket was a c1l that it was unfair, and tendet throttle the people.' He vehemently protested against ring methods and that he want the people from the country to have a voice. He moved that all of the names on the Davis ticket be scratched except the first one, and that no one be allowed to nom inate more than one delegate. Captain Davis in reply disclaimed any knowledge of a ring or clique, that hie had no further interest than to see the county well represented by men who were men at home and men abroad, that he alone was responsible for the formation of the ticket and that he could not be induced torun for office. He said that he could not be dragge d into office with trace chains. Capt. Bradham made a speech cal [ing upon every body to do away with factional lines, the only man in the convention who .mentioned anything about factions, and while he was speak ing some one behind us remarked, "why drag in factions when none ex isted?" Mr. E. B. Felder came forward and made a plea to the convention to act wisely and to elect oily such men as would reflect credit upon us. He begged that no man be elected whose private life was such as we would not care to invite into our hoenes and whose association in private, unfitted him to mingle with our families. Mr. Felder's remarks were earnest and impressive as well as sensational, and when he concluded Mr. Galluchat arose, and with much feeling announced that he was a candidate for Congress and would be in the race to the finish, that his name had been handled by the slan derer secretly, but he defied any man to point his finger at his character. tHe was raised here and associated with many of the members of this conven tion and if they knew anything reflect ing upon him as an honorable man let them speak out. He urged the mem bers to ignore the ring ticket, that if he went to the convention Clarendon would have the next Congressman. that he was selected to make this race by a conference in Columbia, and he would make it: turning to M~r. Felder. with his whole frame shaking with emotion, dramatically exclaimed, that these slanders and lies had been utter ed before and he dared any man to ac cuse him. M1r. Felder remarked that he had simply threw down the cap and 31r. Galluchat saw fit to pick it up: that others were nominated and they did not seem to think it incumbent upon them to protest. It was only during this part of the proceedings that there was anything like order; everybody was looking for the "magazine" to explode. As soon as this word battle was over the voting for delegates was ordered, and the tellers reported those elected to be: J. E. Tindal, J. H. Timmons, T. B. MIims, A. J1. Richbourg, A. T. Bud din. Joseph Sprott. E. D. Hodge and J. H. Lesesne tied and M1r. Hodge de elincd in M1r. Lesesne's favor. Those who wer defeated were: Louis Appelt. J. S. Cantey. 0. C. Scarboro. 1. C. Galluc'hat and XW. J. Trurbev-ille. At the request of several memibers, we copied a burlesque ticket which was Dangerous if Neglected. Lor voted but very properly not courted. The ticket read: W. J. Turbeville, Jos. Sprott, Louis Appelt, Tom Gag. Bill Stiffle, Chas. Tirottle, Doc Hold Em, Sump Handcuff. These tickets were voted in protest to the rule adop ted, forcing the delegates to vote for eight names and not permit ting a member to vote for three, five, seven or more. These vot ers were desirous of voting for Messrs. Sprott, Turbeville and Appelt and no more, hence they made the burlesque of the other five names. We under stand that these tickets have been pre served for the future, and we will state that there is no mystery about it. The tickets were copied by Louis Appelt by request, from a ticket already written by another party. Before the voting took place there was much wrangling over the motion forcing the delegates to vote for only those nominated and that each delegate must vote for eight names. This caused much dissatisfac tion and created considerable soreness: many of the members regarded it an infri'ngement of their rights. No resolutions were offered regarding McLaurin, but had such been offered they would have been overwhelmingly adopted, as the convention was almost a unit against McLaurin. It was ex pected that resolutions looking to Con gress would have been presented, but none were offered. We have witnessed many conven tions in this county, in fact this was the first since 1880 that did not have us en rolled as a member, but we have never before seen such an unruly body. There was no semblance of order-delegates and spectators standing up, mingling with each other, all talking out and one of the ballots showed a count of more tickets than there were delegates. But it is all over now, the delegates are elected. the work of the - Betsies and I" has been accomplished, and all of the " Betsies" can now rejoice that they have succeeded in killing (?) one little "cub," even if it did take an army of " Betsies" to do it, and so glorious are they over their victory, that they did not dare come forward and ask for the prize, fearing the little killed (?) cub was playing 'possum and would spring upon them.
