The vote on the Ship-Subsidy bill in the United States Senate, showed- that as a result of a Democratic caucus, the Demo crats voting on the measure poll ed their votes against it. Senator McLaurin not being bound by the party caucus was the only Dem ocrat who voted for it. The op ponents of McLaurin would offer this as evidence going to show that McLaurin is a Republican, but they are somewhat stumped when they are confronted with the fact that some of the leading Republicans in the Senate voted againsti the bill also. If then, McLaurin is a Republican for voting for it, we would like to know how Spooner and some six or eight of the other strongest Republicans will be classed. Ac cording to the reasoning of Mc Laurin's opponents, that because McLaurin votes for certain measures introduced by Repub licans which he does not regard as having anything to do with party principle, but sincerely believes they are measures to benefit the people he represents, he is a Republican, then it mustI follow that the Republicans who vote against these measures are Democrats. If such is the case there is a very elastic set of Rep resentatives in the United States; One day they are Democrats and the next they are Republicans, according to the purposes of the politicians who desire to make capital. Protection is one of the poli cies which a majority of the Republicans are agreed upon, and yet we find Senator Tillman when the bill for, the repeal of the war revenue tax came up, protesting against taking off the ten cents per pound tax on tea, because he wanted protection for a little tea farm in South Caro lina. We have no objection to protecting this industry, but ac cording to the arguments of Mc Laurin's opponents protection is a Republican policy and any Democrat voting for such, is "a traitor to his party." When McLaurin as a member of the lower branch of Congress voted to protect cotton, rice and lumber, because they were pro-! ducts of the South, Tillman, Irby, Evans and the rest of them began charging treachery to the Democratic party, but that was McLaurin, now it is Tillnan who votes for protection, and because it is him it is another matter, notwithstanding the inconsisten cy. We do not censure Senator Tillman for his vote to protect the Summnerville tea industry, we believe it needs protection, even if it is the only "tea farm"in the State, but if one "tea farm" -needs protection because it is a southern industry, then in the name of sense why object to Mc Laurin asking-for protection -m the cotton, rice and lumber, the products not owned by one wealthy citizen, but the result of the toil of a vast majority of our people and products upon* which their very existence de pends. The Democratic leaders corn mit the party to a low tariff pol icy, but if a low tariff policy is against the interests of the peo ple of the South. then it is right~ for our Representatives to look out for home interests, rather than cling to a party theory. We say the vote of Senator Till man to vrotect the product of the Summerville tea farm should open the eyes of those who con demned Senator McLaurin for voting to protect cotton, rice and lumber. WHAT A SHAME! . The Columbia State of last Monday, has rendered the State1 of South Carolina a service which must be appreciated by every right thinking man re gardless of his political affilia tions. In the issue referred to, that paper through its editor has proven by the official records that James H. Tillman, made a false statement to the Senate. The matter relates fo a rulino-g made by Governor Tillman while presiding over the Senate at its last session; the ruling was questioned, and Governor Till man submitted his ruling to the President of the United State~s Senate, and the Speaker of the lower House of Congress; both of these eminent authorities de cided adversely to his ruling, whereupon he deliberately an nounced to the Senate and had spread upon its journal the state ment that both of these parli mnentarians had sustained the correctness of his ruling. The' editor of The State communicat ed with Senator Frye and Speak er Henderson, and from them he produces the convictmng evidence. If a lawyer in a court was to' deceive a Judge by reading falsely from a law book, that lawyer would be disbarred in~ officer of a lawmaking body wil fully deceives the body he pre sides over, there should be some way of forcing his commission away from him. In this matter, no question of party or factional politics can enter: it is a ques tion of bad morals that no decent man can condone. The Tillman-Roosev el t-J e n kins incident pales into insigniti cence beside this. the latest ill "Jim" Tilltan's ch ie'kt'ed ea reer. Never before in the his tory of the State of South ('aro lina, not even when the State lav bleeding at every pore, and was being pilfered by a gang of marauders, did her citizens have heaped upon her such mortifica tion. The second highest oficer in South Carolina stands before the country convicted of an offense which can do naught but bring the blush of shame to every man. Think of it! Such a man liable at any moment to become gov ernor. This same "Jim" Till man has said he will be a candi date for Governor this summer, but if The State's exposure does I not make him change his iind. then his cheek must be adamant indeed STATE OF OHIO. The people of this section are anx ious to hear a joint debate, between Senators Tillman and McLaurin this summer at Beulah, where the people of several countries can have an op portunity to hear them face on the great national issues which are separ ate and distinct from our home affairs. So far as State and county affairs are concerned we have plenty of home peo ple to keep us informed. The question started by THE TIMES about devising a plan to carry the school children to Charleston to the ex position is being freely discussed over here, and the THE TLMES editor is be ing highly complimented for his spirit, but I think the parents ought to con tribute the money, and not take it out of the public funds. The public schools do not continue long enough now, and if the money is spent to take the chil dren to the exposition it will shorten the term. What you say about the benefits of the visit is true, but I do not like to touch the public funds for other purposes. Parents ought to feel it to be their duty to see that their children go to the exposition, but. let the money be made up by private con tribution and not out of the school funds. I glory in your spunk in offering to be one of twenty citizens to contribute enough money to pay the railroad ex penses of the children. It ought to make some of your ground mole friends come to the front and show their friendliness for the people. as they would like to profess at times. B. Heads Should Never Ache.
