The time for selecting a new town
council is drawing near, and every
voter should see to it that he procures
his registrationl certificate, because,
without such a certificate they cannot
vote. A, we have remarked before it is
hiohly important that an interest should
be taken in the selection of our town
otficials, as under the law the council
will have increased powers and it be
hooves the taxpavers to see to it that
men of good judgment are selected. We
i have no other intere:t in the town
election than to get the best material
to conduct the affairs of the town, and
this should be the feeling of every
voter. Under the general law taxes
can be ra sed as high as ten mills and
the income this would bring, together
with the other sources of revenue, it
leaves room for extravagance, if not
carefuih- managed. There should be
a citizens meeting at an early date to
adopt a platform and nominate a ticket,
and every voter can have a voice in the
selection if he will take the requisite
interest in the town's welfare.

Last Satureay evening the store of
W. E. Jenkinson was aglow with sun
light brilliancy. Ever on the lookout
to attract attention to his well equipped
establishment. he was not baffled by
the cost, and lie made a contract with
the aoent, and had installed into his
store the famous Kitson light, which
for niellownes, and brilliancy is far
superior to the electrie light. The
;ights in the vicinity of Jenkinson's had
a .lufll red appearance, and as one fel
low expressed it when his attention
was called to the splendor of Jenkin
son's light said "yes, it is a fine light,
but don't it play hell with the others?"
Whether Jenkinson in this exhibition
of enterprise has gone premeditately to
do with the other merchants what the
fellows say his lights are doing, we do
not know. but we do know that any
merchant who shows so much pride in
his business as to provide the most
searching light on his goods is bound to
impress the trading public, and if he
does not exactly play the game his
lights are said to have played. he will
most, unless they get a hump on them
selves also. People like to see im
provements and whenever they are
made their attention is drawn.

On the evening of March 7th, which
is next Friday, there will be an enter
tainment at the Pinewood Academy for
the benefit of purchasing patent desks
for the school. State Superintendant of
Education J. J. McMahan has accepted
n invitation to deliver an address on
the occasion, and the good people of
the community will provide such an
evening's entertainment as will give
great pleasure to all who attenct. The
people of the Pinewood section are
taking a lively interest in the cause of
education, and we hope the attendance
on next Friday evening will be in keer
ing with the zeal exhibited by the pro
ooters of the entertainment. The edi
tor of THE TIMES has received most
ordial invitations to be present which
e highly appreciates and will attend
if he is in the county at the time.
Everybody that can, ought to go and
ear the address of Hon. J. J. McMa
han, because he will speak on a subject
that is interesting to every good citi
zen, and especially to those people who
see the necessity of more progressive
ness in our schools. The entertain
ment at Pinewood is for a worthy cause
and deserves to be will patronized.

Our Schools At The Exposition.
In urgring the proposition to take the
school children to the exposition we
have found a response from District!
No. 3. which comprises the schools of!
Miss Gieger at Panola. Miss Weatherly
at Brailsford, and Miss Plowden at
Felder, and the Grange Hall school in
charge of Miss Tindal which is in an
other district, desires to join District
No. 3 in an excursion to Charleston.
On last Saturday, after a talk with
one of the trustess of District No. 3, we
decided to undertake the scheme of
getting up a "Clarendon public school
day" for the exposition,so that as many
of our schools as can, will have an op
portunity to take advantage of the big
excursion. The Wilson & Summerton
railroad, Central road and Alderman's
road can arrange a schedule so that all
of the schools can go into Charleston at
9 o'clock a. m. and leave (harleston at,
U p. in. thus givinz a whole day for
sight seeing.
To carry out this scheme we would
ask that the trustess of the public
schools in Clarendon county who feel
an interest iu the children of their re
spective schools, meet in the court
house in Manning Saturday March 15th
at 12 o'clock m. for the purpose of con
sidering the advisibility of the under
taking. also to appoint a committee to
ascertain the cost. and other matters
that will be necessary. We hope there
will be a full attendance at this meet
ing, and those coming will be prepared
to state the financial condition of their
respective schools.
This prospective visit to the exposi
tion is no idle thought. but it is in the
interest of education. We are sincere
in the belief that our children can
learn more in one day's visit to the ex
position than they can gather from
text books in a whole session. Parents
take an interest in this matter, and
urge your trustees to attend the meet
ing on the 15th inst.
