Taylor, taking about $700. The supposition is that there were four in the gang and it is thought they were seen passmng Lanes on their way to Charleston near daylight. Safe robbers have been very frequent in the upper part of the state lately and we would not be sur prised for them to pay Manning a visit any night. They will never come in with a dress parade when they come either. Today was to have been a big day in the history of the Charleston Exposi tion as President Roosevelt was booked to visit the old city by the sea, but young Theodore Roosevelt, the presi dent's oldest son, is ill with pneumonia at his school in Massachusetts and both the president and Mrs. Roosevelt have gone to the bedside of their boy. This is a great disappointment to the Char leston people and many who intended visiting the city this week and getting a glimpse of the chief Executive. The p resident also regrets deeply that he has been forced to postpone his visit, but he has given his word that he will visit Charleston, so he will probably come in March or April. A very sad death which occurred last Thursday was that of Mr John Colclough, of Jordan, a young man about nineteen years old. He had been ill with pneumonia for ten days or more and was fully resigned. Before passing away he made a number of re quests of the family. one being that he should be buried in the Jordan ceme tery, as he had spent his happiest days in that community. He also requested that Rev P B Wells preach his funeral and selected his own pall-bearers from among his school-mates, as follows: Eugene, Shelby and Maynard Davis, -- Gourdin, Bancroft Lesesne, Davis Sprott, Richard Chewning and Davis Rawlinson. All of his. requests were carried- out as near as it was possible Pinewood Pickups. Editor The Manning Times: The members of the Methodist church gave their pastor Rev. Hodges a pound ing last Monday evening at Mrs. H. F. Stack's residence. It was quite a sur prise to him and it was his first pound ing since he has been in the confer ence. It was rumored that Cupid's battery had bombarded two hearts, and they -wanted the Rev. to raise the flag of truce. Brother Hodges made a short address to those present. The many friends of Miss Mamie Brown will be sorry to learn of her ill ness in Edgefield with the measls. Dr. M. D. Murray has completed his telephone line from here to Ririni. Messrs.
