Died yesterday morning February 4th, at the residence of Mr. C. R. Sprott at Jordan, Mrs. Dororty Clemens of Gr'eelyville, aged about 80 years. J.B. Taylor, the Manning Photogra pher,will be in Alcolu Wednesday,Feb. 12th, and will remain until Monday, 17th, inclusive, making good Photo graphs. Mrs. S. R. Venning, who had almost recovered from her rerent serious ill ness, had a relapse and was, this morn ing, taken to the Baker Infirmary in Sumter. Married by Magistrate Richbourg, -near Foreston last Thursday, Jan. 30, Mr. Henry S. Richbourg to Miss Etta Hodge. The bride is a daughter of Mr. Henry T. Hodge. The legislature is about to put chick ens, geese, ducks and guineas under the the provisions of the general stock law, so that hereafter roosters will have to crow on their own barn-yards. The general snperintendent of the rural free delivery system has directed the postmaster at Manning to notifyv as many of the petitioners as possible pravying for the establishment of the route, that within a week's time the~y must report to the oostmaster all appli cant's whom they 'recommend for the position of carrier. Applicants must be prepared to furnish a suitable horse and wagon or cart for use of the ser vice. A special agent of the depart ment will conduct the examination for The governor on yesterday pardoned Frank M. Player, the Williamsburg dispenser who was convicted nearly a year ago. Nearly everybody in Wil liamsburg signed the petition. Solicitor Wilson consented to the pardon and Judge Watts withdrew his opposition. Player is about sixty years old and has a wife and ten or vwelve children, and further punishmeat would perhaps not have done him any more good than what he has already endured and would have wrought great hardship upon his family, while the law has been fully vindicated. The music and recitations were good and reflected credit on the young ladies who took part. The main feature of the entertainment was the lecture by ex Solicitor Dargan, who pointel out the injustice done South Carolina by his torians and earnestly pleaded for a more thorough and comprehensive manner of teaching the history and ceography of this State, and less of the grandeurof Egyptian and Grecian civ ilization. Mr. Dargan's remarks struck a responsive chord in the hearts of those present and his lectures through out the State will be no doubt produc tive of much good. Lorvea Drug Store. 3 On last Saturday when all the town seemed wrapped in the deepest slum bers and none but the urbanites was in evidence, there came two young men who asked permission to place on exhi bition in the new postoffice a mummi fied woman who, they said, was a starved Cuban found by one of the South Carolina boys while camping in Cuba during tie Hispano-American war. From all four quarters of the town the people came when the call was sounded by a man who, with the aid of a horn, produced a sound very much like a mi:cture of baritone, bass and alto which was unbearable to the musical inhabitants in the vicinity. Some of the Association leaders in this State predict that the twenty-fifth State convention, which is to meet in Columbia, Feb. 8-11, will be a gather ing of great power and inspiration. It will, in all probability, be the largest and most representative gathering of the kind ever held in South Carolina. Charleston is working hard to bring the banner delegation. Practically every college and univer sity in the State will send delegations of its strongest men. Young men from a great many com munities. where there are no associa tions, are planning to go to learn some thing from this organization which has demonstrated its ability to cope with all problems that effect men. The State Executive Committee, through the columns of this paper, ex tends a special invitation to the man agements of cotton mills to send a rep resentative, to participate in the dis cussion relating to practicability of es tablishing work among the men and boys employed in factory districts. Ministers and other Christian men who are interested in the young men of their respective towns are invited to attend this meeting. The convention opens on Saturday~ night, February 8, in the beautiful new building of the Columbia Association. All men who are thinking of attending should communicate, at once, with the State Secretary, addressing him at the Y. M. C. A. Building, Columbia, S. C. Among the prominent speakers is Captain Richmond P. Hobson, the hero of the Merrimac. Captain Hobson was president of the Association while a ca det at West Point, and is a manly, vig orous type of the Christian soldier. Old Soldier's Experience. M. M. Editor The Manning Times: The new town council has made some good improvements in the town for the short length of time they have been in office. The sidewalks are being built up and wooden drains put down and a well dug near the depot which was very much needed. Miss Inez Lide entertained a few of her friends on the evening of the 2nd at a birthday tea party. Those present were Misses Olga and Pauline Rey nolds' Prof. L. Cottingham, Edwin M. Rogers and Walter D. Epperson. The Pinewood Literary Club met last Friday night at the school-house, with Prof. L. Cottingham in the president's chair. The meeting was called to or der after which all business was at tended to. The query for the evening was, Resolved, " That patriotism is on the decline in the South." Dr. G. W. B. Smith and Miss Carrie DesChamps were on the affirmative, while Tom C. Cuttino and Miss Oneida Griffin were on the negative. Both sides acquitted themselves with much credit, espe cially the gentlemen. Miss Griffin was absent and Tom had to handle the sub-, ject alone. He used some comical il ustrations which added much to the pleasure of the club. President Cot tingham's address of welcome to the new members that joined was delivered in the highest style and was very ap propriate for the occasion. The club will be glad to have any one join. It meets at the school-house every Friday night at 8 o'clock. Rev. F. E. Hodges preached to a large congregation last Sunday morn ing. The choir rendered some nice music. The voluntary was much ap preciated by the congregation. Mr. Edwin M. Rogers, bass, deserves spe cial mention. Mr. Jack Shirer, who for the past two months has been under the treat ment of Dr. M. D. Murray, has gotten well and returned to Barnwell. Dr. G. W. B. Smith, who has been ill for a few days, is able to be out again. Mrs. McDonald Green, who has been on a visit to her mother, Mrs. C. E. DesChamps, left for Charleston last week, where she joins Mr. Green to spend a few days at the Exposition. The Exposition party that went down to Charleston last week, came back very much pleased with their trip. Mr. M. Editor The Manning Times: As no one has written from this place in several weeks except the Magistrate at Turbeville I will endeavor to slip in a few dots edgeways'. Miss Allie Boykin of Mayesville has been spending a few weeks with rela tives of this place. Mr. Willie Young and family of Al colu spent several days over here last week, visiting relatives. I see letters keep coming in from sev eral points of the county in regard to magistrate and constable duties. I don't think they understood the editor; he wanted to see if they wanted er needed a magistrate in the Fork and other places mentioned. I was glad to see a card from Magis trate Turbeville of this place. The constable serves warrants when deliv ered to him, to my ')est belief. I do! not believe that there will be any steps taken towards discharging the officers of this place. We see a small statement now and then about the Senate. They will get~ to the county laws as time provides op-I portunity. One of our young men has been seen visiting Turbeville. It may be he has a heart's idol.
