The Manning Grocery Co. James Miller and Peter Dowe were arrainged before Masistrate Youmans for stealing guano from the Clarendon Tobacco Warehouse. Miller was night watchman, so he had a soft snap to ob tain the guano. Miller plead guilty, and was fined $15.00 or 30 days on the gg. Dowe was convicted and obtain ea sentence likewise. Miller paid his fine, but Dowe went to the gang. Hawkins and daughter of Capt. D. J. Bradham. She had been a sufferer for several months and. her death though no su prise brings ~severe grief to her hus band and two sons and many friends. She was just 38 years of age, lacking two days, and has since early girl-hood been a communicant of the Baptist church. The remains will be buried tomorrow at 12 o'clock in the Manning cemetery. At a meeting of the Presiding Elder with the official board of otticers of the Manning Methodist church last Sun day the regular quarterly conference was held and Prof. J. P. Inabnit ap plied for a recommendation to the Dis .trict Conference for license to preach. Mr. Inabnit expressed himself as hav ing felt for several years that he was divinely called to preach and the board in recommending him for license give him best wishes for a succesful career in the Master's work. B. saither Pearson in Sumter a few days .go, after an illness of some weeks. aptain Pearson was born in Claren [on county near Midway in 1839 and ras for many years one of Clarendon's nost sterling citizens. He was nomi iated for the Legislature fron this ounty about 1876 but declined. Later ic moved to Sumter and the people ealizing his sterling worth and good udgement elected him Mayor, and af erwards Sheriff of Sumter County. ie was of a kind and big heart and al ,vays approachable, and these qualities ombined with his strong common iense made him popular by a]l who k-new him. Probably 10,000 appointments will be made this year. All appointments are For life and for most positions only a ommon school education is required. Salaries at appointment vary from 4660 to $1200 a year with liberal pro motions afterward. Politics is not ,onsidered. There is but one Painkiller. Perry Davis'. - County Pension Board. Editor The Manning Times: The Harry Benbow Camp No. 471, met in the' court house January 18th, inst.,Chairman Comrade D. J. Bradham residing. The meeting opened and she Chairman stated the call was for ppointments of one comrade in each township in the county as a historical ?ommittee to gather a history of each Confederate Soldier of the county, that ach county would do the same and when completed it would be bound in rolumn for future generations. This ?ommittee was not made to-day, but the indications are to be perfected at the meeting of the camp. Copies of these histories to be left at the Clerk f court's office for our children and passing generations. . Our comrade D. I. Bradham made an eloquent and feel-. ng address and his reference to the passing of the remnant few of our ?mrades. to the last enemny was sub Lme. He pictured in thrilling colors he heroism, and sufferings of the grand srmy of Virginia, as no man can save im'who followed the blazing guns of his country in that great war. In some af his incidents he refered \o Captain Brooks while severely wounded was ?arried off the field of 'battle begged t be laid upon the breast works to de Fend his struggling comrades, he also xpressed the view that one-hundred dfft-thousand dollars would be ap propriated for pensions this year, that while some politicians were against it that the old Confederate soldier had many friends in the Legislature who would uphold the rights of the soldier's pension. His tribute to the memory of comrades H. J. Holliday and Daniel Feords deceased was beautiful and, iouching. and the great theme of the. immortality of the soul was pleading snd impressive. The old County Pension Board was unanimously elected again by accli mation and'notice is hereby given that the board will meet at Manning eleven' o'clock a. ., on the 1st Saturday in February and each consecutive Satur dy thereafter for four Saturdays em bracing the month of February, after which the board will adjourn sine die. There is no necessity of renewing ap plicatans only where there is to be a change by death, or otherwise. Since our last mneeting, comrades R. S. Mel lette, H. J. Holliday and widow, John J. Editor The Manning Times: Mr. N. C. Stack was shot at by un known parties on the morning of the 13th, after he had met the 4:30 passen ger train and started back home. The Santee River trestle caught fire nn the night of the 17th, and burnt our zbout ninety feet. All trains were de Layed about ten hours. Mr. B. W. DesChamps went down to the Charleston Exposition last week. Mr. W. H. Hatfield and Mrs. John Eennedy of Sunmter,. is visiting Mrs. H. Miss Pauline Reynolds has been vis .ting the Misses Lide. Foreston Replies Editor The Manning Times: I send you for publication the follow ing letter, which in justice to myself, you will please publish. Seeing your publication of Jan. 15th wherein you have insinuatad that the "Magistrates at Foreston, Pinewood Paxville and New Zion have been do' ing nothing, and their donstables being paid for work that is done by the sher iff." I having been the constable foi the magistrate here for a number o1 years, in justice to myself I feel com. peled to reply to same. I having al ways done my duty as an officer and "knowing of my own knowledge' that the "sheriff' does but. very littlk work that could have been done by the constable of this place and that only, when parties have had warrants sworr out before the magistrate at Manning, which may have occured once or twice. I have arrested parties for the sherifl here, and in the vicinity of Manning and always do my duty as such officer, I think it an outrage, and a great in. justice to say such of one; and let it g( out to the world that we draw our pa) and do nothing. I do not know whal work the sheriff does for Pinewood, Paxville and New Zion, but I know wE execute our own warrants. and while we have had but very little lawlessness at this place, if it was not for a magis trate and constable here we might have more crime committed, I feel satisnfed we would. I have offerred my services to the sheriff, when criminals were al large during the past year, and war rants have been sent me by him, and I have always arrested the parties i1 they could be found, and have losi night's sleep more than once doing such work. I have also assisted the magis trate at Manning when his constable was not there, or at least the sheriff o deputy sheriff who Is constable for the magistrate there. I only do this ir justice to the office at this place, as the publication of last week, to go out t( the public without being somewhat cor. rected may cause those who read the paper and know nothing about us, t misunderstand the same. Childers has answered the last roll call, and gone to join the army in camps immortal, thus passing away at the ripe old age of seventy eight years: he leaves two sons and his widow and a host of friends to mourn his loss-Jordan his native home will miss him for his pure and undefiled Christian character, and Godly exam ples: his church has lost a power, and while his Corinthian column is broken and hear his voice no more in fervant prayer. We are assured he has joined the church Triumphant above. He fol lowed the fortunes of the army of Nor. thern Virginia, and failed, not amid the blood curdling sounds of the storms of the battle strife. Huggins spent a few days of last week with relatives in Bishopville. Mr. C. L. Cuttino of Sumter visited our town last week. Mr. Bruce Bradham who has been attending school at Edgefield, and who has been quite sick, returned home last Saturday. Mr. John Clark and Mrs. Mary Rhodus were married last Wednesday at the home of Mr. Willie King near here. After a sumptious dinner the happy couple left for their home near Jordan.
