The County Commissioners held a special meeting last Saturday to get up necessary data to furnmsh the Repre sentatives in the legislature. Col. F. M. Mixon, formerly State liquor commuissioner, and afterwards a lender of money in the city of Columbia, was in Manning last Saturday. Permission has been obtained to move the post office from its present location, to the store formerly occu pied by S. R. Venning as a jewelry store. Parties desiring to write to the Senator, should address their letters to the Senate Chamber, they will reach us quicker than if they were address ed simply to Columbia. .e The lovers of deer driving had sever al days fine sport last week among the deer that were driven out by the fresh et on Santee. Supervisor Owens bag ged a fine buck. SSheriff Davis went to Charleston last Friday evening to consult with an oc culist'about his eye which has been Triving him trouble of late. He re turned home Sunday morning. A petition is in circulation for the re moval of the telegraph office from the depot up town. It is receiving some approval from the officials. Mr. C. W. Wells will have the office in charge. %On last Thursday night, Mr. Edwin Beard and Miss Eliza Coker made a hasty call on Magistrate Turbeville of New Zion, and with promptness the Salem Judge pronounced thenm man and wife and sent them back home re joicing. The train which now comes from Charleston each morning will arrive at 8:39 instead ol 9:07 as heretofore, and returning from Columbia at night will arrive at 6:53 instead of 6:56. -On Tuesdays, Thurs days and Saturdays a train will alsc come from Charleston at 8:21 p. m. go ing to Sumter, and each morning on the same days one will pass Manning at 9 o'clock going to Charleston. This is a great improvement and will be much appreciated by the people ol Manning who have had such poor ac cnmodations so long. The people of this town are calle upon to say whether or not they desirE to come under the general ncorpqra tion Act, and as the question will nol be voted upon until April we will hav plenty of time to give our views latei on. It is our Exposition, and in after years everybody should be able to say that they have seen it. Berger, the alleged bigamist from South Carolina, accompanied by a young woman said to- be his wife. landed in Newton, N. C.. after leaving Greensboro. When he read of his ex posure, he sought aid of the Methodist pastor for the woman and left town. The pastor knew the woman's relatives and sent her away. Berger said she is the daughter of a Methodist preacher in South Carolina. It is said her name is Wilson and that she is of a highly respected family.--Sumter Herald. What's Your Face Worth! Loryea Dru Store. 6 The people of the Fork section are wanting a magistrate for that section, and we understand they will petition the legislature at this session. We have thought it would be a good idea to make changes in the magistrate system of this county, for as it is, all of the work is done by the magistrates at St Paul and Manning, and the conse quence is that there is a great deal of money paid out for no returns. If the magistrates were put on a fee system, probably better results would come from Foreston, Pinewood, Paxville and New Zion, and the sheriff would not have to be doing so much work that constables are being paid for. We see it stated that a $1,000,000 company is to be organized in New Yk'ty for the purpose of erecting warehouses over the country, so thai farmers can hold their crops for better prices. The plan is to issue certificates for the products, and have the banks to loan money on the certificates. The first warehouse to be erected is to be i the South with a view tohandling cot ton. This may be a good scheme, but we would advise every farmer carrying his cotton to one of these warehouses to not borrow less than the market value of his cotton at the time .0: storage. We have no confidence in the project. It is an imitation of the sub treasury scheme which sounded well im political speeches to an excited au dience. The annual report of the Secretary of State shows that under the newl charter laws there has been turned in to the treasury, in fees and commnis sions for corporation charters for the 'year 1901 the sum of $40.583.71l. Thus showing that there is a vast amount o' capital being invested in South C'aroh White Man Turned Yellow. Great consternation was felt by the friends o0 M. A. Hogarty of Lexington. A meeting of the County Pensiora Board has been called for the third Satday in 'January at 11 o'clock at the court house, in Manning. All in terested parties will take notice. We would be glad to have a large meeting that day of the survivors of the war and if found to -be desired, we woulc ike to organize a Historical Commit tee, one historian at least from cacd township in the county. The program will consist o instrumental and vocal music, and those who attend will be well repaid with at entertainment of culture and refine ment. Evet'ybody should go. The ad mission fee for adults is only 25 cents children, 10 cents. We hope there wil be a large audience in order that sue) refining entertainments will be encour aged to come here. Your proposition for a free tobacco warehouse in 'Manning is a 'good one and if the business men will go into it. Manning will be the market. Miss Lillie McElveen of Spring Bank has taken charge of the school near Mr. Pressley Bakers.' She is well known through this section and is a faithful teacher. Superintendent of education. Mr. L. L. Wells is visiting the schools and the teachers are all glad to meet him. One of our young men has been vis iting Paxville recently and by next Christmas we e pect to see happy re suIts from this visit. The roads and bridges of this section arp sadiy in need of the attention of our County Supervisor. He should get I after the overseers. Mr. Shuvy Graham who went in Santee river swamp hunting on the 27th, last month, put his horse in a stable on Sand Ridge, he then went in the swamp and stayed about two hours and when he returned, his horse had . broken down one end of the stable and had gotton out. Mr. Graham began searching for his horse at once but could not find him. The swamp has been searched from Wateree Junction to where the Atlantic Coast Line crosses the swamp at Rimini. He has not heard or seen anything of his horse. o Mr. Tom P. Cuttino has moved from the Welch old store, to where Mr. A. L'. Burkettt kept the furniture store. Miss Mamie Brown has returned to Edgefield where she is going to school atthe S. C. C. I. Miss Alma Broadway is at school in Edgefield. I Mr. Walter Logan the popular shoe drummer for M. Drake & Sons of Charleston, S. C. was in town last week. Mr. Edwin M. Rogers who has been laid up for a few days with La Grippe, is able to b'e out again. Mrs. Henry F. Stack has returned from a visit to relatives in Lake City. Mr. N. L. Broughton who has been to see his future better half in the up per part of the State has returned home.I Mr. John J.
