t A Strong Letter From a Business Man.
Mr. Louis Appelt, Manning, S. C.
DEAR Sra:-As I have heard nothing
- of the cotton mill for Manning and
s Clarendon county for some time, I
t thought perhaps a few lines in your pa
' per would bring this very important
subject to life again.
A little over a year ago I discussed
the matter with a few of our leading
business men and they did not seem to
take it or see it as I did. I have been
watching the course of events since
and the impression made on me is that
a first class cotton mill at Manning is of
vital importance to the merchants, far
mets and laborers of this community
and a large part of the county. And
if some leading citizen with a few thou
sand dollars would take the lead in this
matter I have no doubt that the money
for this mill could be raised in a short
time. Now we will go over the ad
vantages and see what they are.
First, the Merchant. Suppose we
build a mill that will employ 500 hands
at 60 cents per day (they will average
s more), there will be $1.800 in cash to be
I spent each week with the merchants,
s farmers, butchers, gardeners, drug
t gists, churches, etc. This is not just
. one week, but every week of the year.
Suppose the merchants of this town had
2 this mill now, in the distressing condi
tions under which they are laboring,
what a blessing it would be to them!
- Now take the laboring class of Deo
- ple. What would this mill be to them,
s if they could get employment in this
f mill, 500 of them, say with each to have
I three others to support-1,500 little
D ones, old mothers, old fathers?
r Take the farmer and gardener, who
3 have made nothing this year. Next
F spring when they could come to the
mill and sell their truck for the cash
what a blessing it would be to them.
In the fall the farmer could sell his cot
ton, or a large part of it, to the mill at
fair prices.
Now take the land owners. It would
6 increase the value of real estarte more
than double, which will be much more
than the mill will cost; this has proven
so in all of the cotton mill sections.
t And it will pay the stockholders a good
profit besides-if it is properly man
- aged.
I do not write this from hearsay-I
have some experience. We work 83
white pole in my mill-the Manning
Hosiery M ill-and they all seem to be
happy and living nicely. I am sure
they support over 250 people, while
without this employment some of them
could not support themselves.
SI hope this will bring this very im
portant matter to the attention of
every citizen of Clarendon county. Let
them think seriously of it, and if they
will put their shoulders to the wheel,
Clarendon will have a cotton mill of
which every one of them will be proud.
Yours truly,HAV.
W. SCOTTHAv.

'The Braflsford-Richardsonl Marriage.
St. Mathias Episcopal church, Sum
merton, presented a scene of life and
loveliness on Thursday, December 19th.
The occasion was a "Christmas Wed
ding." The principals were Mr. Lu
can Edward Brailsford and Miss Ele
nora Norvelle Richardson.
-The little house of worship had been
.,transformed into a thing of beauty by
.the friends of the bride. The bright
-red berries of the holly tree were artis
-tically inter-twined with festoons of
wild smilax, which were draped about
Sthe chancel and walls of the church in
t beautiful harmony.
, The decorations about the chancel
were very elaborate. The altar was
' pure white with delicate sprays of ivy
sgracefully draped about it. Above the
altar was a pyramid of one hundred
f lighted candles reaching up to the line
,of the pointed arch. A bell of flowers
Sand evergreens was suspended from the
' arch and about the bell burned clusters
1 of candles. The decorations were ar
y' tistic and beautiful and St. Mathias has
y never before been so lovely.
r The hour of the marriage was high
noon, and as both of the young people
are favorites the building was crowded
with their friends.
r At the appointed hour or a few min
utes thereafter, just sufficient to cause
y the interested audience to grow a little
t impatient, the bridal party arrived.
To the strains of Mendelssohn's fa
- mous Wedding March, rendered by
e Mrs. Jno. C. Manning, with violin ac
companiment by Maj. H. B. Richard
>f son, the party entered the church.
The ushers, Messrs. J. W. Rigby and

e Miss Taisie Manning of Sumter, with

a Miss Irene Brailsford of Richmond,
-with Thomas C. Richardson of Panola.
Miss Marguerite Tindal of Felder,
e with H. B. Richardson, .Jr., of Fulton.
- s-ss Maude H. Brock of Panola, with
A. H. Boykin of Camden.
Miss Katie Anderson of Summerton,
with S. A. Harvin of Sumter.
s Miss Henretta Brailsford of Camden,
f with William M. Richardson of Orange
r burg.
s Miss Elenora Richardson of Fulton,
tt with Edwai'd Haynesworth of Sumter.
Miss Lizzie Boykin of Camden, with
a James M. Brailsford of Sumter.
o Next came the bride with her Maid
a of Honor, Miss Susan Richardson, and
the groom with his best man, Mr. J. M.
Richardson, Jr., of Panola.
y Beneath the bell the couple took their
o place and as "Oh. Promise Me," was
r softly played, Rev. H. H. Covington
-performed the ceremony.
The bridesmaids wore gowns of rich
a crimson organdie, Gainsboro hats,black
o suede gloves, black slippers, and carried
e lovel bunches of holly tied with
e streamers of white satin ribbon.
The maid of honor was gowned in
e white organdie with crimson stock and
