County Supervisor Owens left las Sunday morning to attend the "Gooc Roads" meeting at Greenville, where he will learn a great deal about prac tical road building, which he will put into operation on the roads in thir county. Harry Lesesne was one of the law class that went up before the sup reme court last Thursday and stood a very complimentary examination. August Barno, sentenced to the State penitentiary from Clarendon county, and afterwards hired out to work on the farm of J. D. Haselden at Sellers in Marion county, escaped from that farm on last Sunday and a reward of $50. is offered for his capture and return t Mr. J. D. Haselden at Sellers. At the sante time Barno made his escape, an other negro by the name of Jim Cole man escaped with him,. a reward of $50. offered for Coleman also. Sheriff Davis and his deputy is kept very busy serving the warrants of the Manning Magistrate, and the work has grown to such an extent that in all probability souiething will have to be done to provied him with additional help. Parties living near other magis trates come to Manning to prosecute and the law should require persons to go to their nearest magistrate. When the act was made regtiring the sheriff to serve the local magistrate's warrants it was not contemplated to relieve the constables of other magistrates from doing the work they are being paid for. The county delegation will have to con sider this important matter. In the Magistrate's court yesterday -in the case of Ashby Robertson, charg ed with assault and battery with in tent to kill, and carrying a conealted weapon. S. G. Dennis the prosecutor was not allowed to testify on the ground that he, Dennis, had been convicted and sentenced to the penitentiary. Dennis showed that he had been par. doned by the governor, but counsel for Robertson took the position and was sustained by the Magistrate, that the pardon restored to Dennis the right to vote, - but not the right to testify in court. It does seem to us that if a man has his citizenship restored by a ardon, it carries with it the full right f citizenship, voting, sitting on juries. -and testifying in courts. Dennis pardon would surely amount to little if he is to be debarred from nrosecuting those who transgress against the rights of citizenship that has been re~ stored to him by the governor's pardon. We have received a letter from the postmaster at Mouzon's, in which he sets forth that our complaint about THE TIMES for the postoffices of Workman, New Zion, Seloc, Turbeville and other points not being promptly delivered, and often delayed cannot be attributed to his office: that upon a:-rival they are -promptly forwarded, but that some times they do not reach him until Sat urdav in that case they are held over until Monday. We also received a let ter from the postmaster at Kingstree in which he says he sends out THE TIMES promptly on arrival. Something is wrong either at Kingstree or Mouzon's. THE TIMES mail leaves here Wednes day evening and reaches KingstreE early Thursday morning, on Friday, Workman and the other Salem point should be sent out. reaching Mouzon's the same morning, and there it is taken out, and the others are sent on, thus making the delivery all on Friday. When the ball starts we think we will be able t ishow the nimbleness of the mind of~ some politicians, and also something of more importance to the people than our individual views on national ques- E tions. The people are wide-awake and W if there is anything they do hate, it is ( hy pocrisy. They have~more confidence E in an outspoken man with whom they E1 disgree, than one of these kind that E make their opinions suit the occasion. E By our unhidden conduct, we have lost a two subscribers, but our subscription i lists continue increasing all the same, y to the extent that we are sending out a more papers now than ever, and every one of them to bona-fide subscribers who E anxiously read the paper.
