Died. at her home in Marion on last Saturday, 17th inst., Mrs. Ann L. Reaves, aged 76 years, the mother of Mr. James Reaves, who lives in the Fork section of this county. Mr. G. M. When completed, Manning will have as nice hotel building as any town outside of a city in the State. The Manning street railway bids fair to become one of the finest invest -ments in this country. Davis, of Davis, and Mr. J. D. Gerald, the energetic manager of the C. M. He has decided to give these books to Pine Grove academy and the Packsville high school, and he would be glad if one of the trustees of these schools will call on him for the books. The score on the first day was 11 to 10 in favor of Kingstree, and the second day 10 to 9 in favor of Juneville. It was expected that the rub would be played on Friday but the Kingstree boys had to go home. The attendance on both games was quite large and the crowds were disap pointed when it was learned that June ville would not get a chance to show Kingstree how to play ball on the third day. The laws of health require that the bowels move once each day and one of the penalties for violating this law is piles. On Monday night of last week some dastard went into the cotton field of Mr. E. P. Briggs at Silver. and with a maliciousness that borders on fiendish ness, pulled up about a fourth of an acre of fine cotton. The scoundrel of course has some grudge against Mr. Briggs, and was too cowardly to go to him in person, -so under the cover of night when the Briggs family were innocent of harm, the coward took his spite by destroying the victim of his hate's property. We do not know what the penalty for this sort of an of fense is, but the law should handle such villians with great severity. A man who would sneak into another's field and destroy the results of his honest toil, would not hesitate to apply a torch or deal an assassins blow. We hope Mr. Briggs will be able to run down the scoundrel that committed such a foul crime. Trio, S. C., July 31, 1901. Professor Clinkscales of Wofroi College is to be with us from the 17t to 19th inst. We all looked for THE MANnIn TIMEs editor at the picnic on ti 15th inst. at Cole's Mill; his not ge ting there was a disappointment I his host of friends in Salem. The picnic was a success in ever sense of the word; the crowd wi very large, being estimated at ovE one thousand people, and althoug the weather was inclement, th crowd enjoyed themselves. Two ministers present gave shoi talks, and I am beginning to belies that THE TIMES editor stays awa from our picnics fearing that we wi make him talk too. The preachei talked about "Train a child in tli way it should go, and when it is of it will not depart from it," and the laid great stress in lecturing the oh er heads on the importance of how training, which is more or less nei lected. After the talks, dinner was ar nounced, and without attempting t describe it, we will say it was a Si lem picnic dinner, and those wh have had the good fortune to atten a picnic here will understand its fu meaning. If there is ever a famin around Manning the cause may b attributed to one of our county off cials, because the only reason he di not eat up everything before hi! was he only had two hands, and h could not pick up the food fat enough. My soul, I never in all m life saw a man with such an apps tite; that man would throw an arm on short rations within a week. Tillman is too shrewd to ge into any such trap. The party w have in mind need not hope tha even the: great Ben Tillman can re store him to political life; he is ou and will stay out as far as count; politics is concerned. I have never seen the people so it different about politics, they do no care a fig about the thing. Whe the time comes for them to vote the will vote as they please, and all th speech-making that politicians ca: fill the air with, will have no effect. I expect that the candidates wvi be plentiful next summer, and sow of them now are learning to recit the speeches they read in the newi papers. Next summer will _produc a crop of statesmen who will kno' more about government policies tha: Webster, Clay or Calhoun, and the will rattle off speeches, the words c which they will be ignorant of these presuming statesmen thin they will fool the people, but the are only fooling themselves. In m opinion, when we have our next pr mary the people will not conside who a candidate favors for the Unil ed States Senate, they will vote fc the man who has merit for the pos tion he seeks.
