Richbourg, from which verdict an appeal was taken. On Saturday last the Supreme court remanded thie case for a new trial. The grounds upon which the case is sent b"ack has not yet been published. The people living in the vicinity of the Moses Levi Memorial Institute building. are being very much annoyed by a lot of boisterousness nearly eveiry night. The grounds and the piazzas are being used as a rentdervous for a lot of young negroes whose laughter and loud taliking away late into the night, is v'ery disagr-eeable. He em barked on a tramp steamer at Iloila on the 25th, day of May, reached Manila 29th, then embarked on transport Thyra June 1st: the route taken home was by Nagasaki, Japan, and stopped r there two days for coal, then proceeded c home by way Alutien Islands, part of 1 Alaska, arrived at Portland Oregon on the night of 30th of June, took a train to San Francisco, where he was mus tured out of service July 5th. His com- C pany was the last of volunteers to leave ti the Philippines, and the last to be mus- Y tered out of service. Lieutenant Davis a was offered a commission as First Lieut- r enant of native troops, but this he de- a elined for the reason that he wanted to d get back to the States, as he had been t in steady service since Sept. 1st, 1899. a He enlisted as a private and was steadi ly promoted to sergeant, then to a lieutenancy. He is looking the picture of health and his experience has been of educational value to him. He thinks E that the development of the Philippines will prove a great thing for the cotton growers of the South, and that the s policy of the government towards those e far away islands will result in opening . up a more extended markets for the r comsumption of the products of the t farmers of this country. He believes the attempts to obstruct the govern ment in its policy of expansion is a mis- P take on the part of southern represen- Y tatives. Editor The Manning Times: The school trustees of this townshipi held an election on the 13lh, for thei purpose of electing teachers for thet coming term. Miss Anna Miles ofs Marion, S. C., was elected principal, Miss Lela Geddings one of our charmn ing young ladies who graduated at Welsh Neck High School this year was . elected assistant. There were more I than twenty applications for this school.1 Pinewood and Paxville crossed batst at Paxville on the 11th, which was vie- I torious for the Pinewood boys, 10 to 8. The game was close and very interest- t ing all through. Mr. Tom Cuttino one1 of Paxville's old boys, but now a Pine- 1 wood sport went downi with the ball team. We play the Juneville team ati Juneville on the 17, inst.t Arrangements have been perfected by which a contingent of the factlty of Clemsoni College will conduct a Far mers i:.stitute here on Thursday July 1 25th. We regret to state that the In stitute will be held only for one day owing to a press of many engagements of the like throughout the State. There will be in attendance a Vetinarian and it will be a fine opportunity for the farmers to present their erippled stock as a clinic, by which all will be benefit ed. The whole affair will be free and everybody is invited. The good accru ing from these Institutes is incalculable. Messrs. N. L. Broughton and Tom Cuttino attended a (dark) mnoonlight pinic near Tindals Station on the eve ning of the 12th. They report a pleas ant trip. Miss Mamie Browvn has returned home after a two weeks visit to friends near Sdmmerton. Miss Carrie Des~hamips wio has been on a months visit to relatives above Sumtei', returned home last Wednesday. Fleming is quite ill. The tobacco warehousemen are now mong the people. Messrs. C. M. Iason and R. D. Clark of Manning )assed through this section a few days go. Both of these gentlemen are pop ilar with the people. There is a very sad case over in hese parts, a young man by the name >f Mellette, son of R. S. Mellette lately leceased, has been giving his family a treat deal of trouble and anxiety, to he extent that they have been forced o call upon the law officers for pro ection. Mellette acts as if he were in ane, but there is much method in his sadness. Magistrate Turbeville and dr. T. M. Beard arrested him a few Lays ago, and before being taken he aid he would die before leaving his oom, but he didn't die and they fetch d him out of the room too. Mellette ill have to be put in jail. Mr. Editor, stand steadfast and un aovable and by your earnest interest or the welfare of the people, your ighteous cause will win.
