The Secretary of State has adiressed
a letter to Clerk of Court Timmons,
calling his attention to a ruling of the ]
Attorney General relating to the quali
fications of township assessors. The
ruling requires all assessors to file an
oath with the Clerk of Court and be
commissioned by the Governor.

Capt. P. J. Coffee died at his home r
in Boone, Watauga county, N. C., a
few days ago, aged 75 years. Captain
Coffee was well known in this county,
where he had many friends. He has
made regular trips through this section
as a horse trader for more than forty
years.
Mr. James Brown of Putsmouth, Va.,

Last Saturday was a gala day for the a
Pine Grove Sunday school. The at- r
tendance is estimated at over 1,000 peo- 5
ple. The children carried out a well 1
prepared program of recitations, sing
ing and declamations, after which a de
lightful dinner was served. There were
to be several addresses, but the speak
ers did not get there on account of the ~

Died, last Sunday morning, Rev. L. I
W. Jenkins, D. D., pastor of Ebenezeri
(colored) Baptist church. The de- 1
ceased had, by his zeal and energy, .1
about completed a new church build- 1
ing, but was called to rest before he
had an opportunity to preach in it.
Rev. Jenkins was a good citizen and<
his life was a shining example to his
race. He merited the good will and re- 1
spect of everybody, and the tremendous1
crowd that attended his funeral Monday I
was an attestation of the love the pe
p le of his own race had for him. Rv. I
Jenkins was an educated man, and his
life was spent in an endeavor to build 1
up his race. He taught school and in
the school room he was an earnest
worker. The' colored people of this t
county have in his death met with a se
vere loss, because men of L. W. Jen-j
kins' individual worth are scarce. Rev.
C. W. Watson preached the funeral 1
sermon and a number of other preach
ers made eulogistic speeches, after 1
which a very long funeral procession 1
followed the body to the cemetery.

The case of Eugene Lowry charged
with murder was being tried when we
went to press last week. The prisoner
was found guilty with a recommenda
Lion to mercy, and the Judge sentenced
him to life imprisonment.
The next case was an exposition of a
nost revolting degradation, a white
nan by the name of Charles A. Brad
am, deserted an excellent woman who
was his wife, to take up and co-habit
with a white strumpet by the name of
.Iartha McCall, the mother of several
1egro as well as white children.
L'his McCall woman is a most repulsive
ooking creature, unkempt and filthy,
md what could have possessed Brad
lam to desert his wife, a highly re
;pectable woman is a mystery. The
,harge of adultery was proven to the
atisfaction of the jury who brought in
verdict of guilty, and the Judge sen
enced Bradham to the penitentiary for
mne year or pay a fine of $I50, and he
entenced Martha McCall to the pen
tentiary for 9 months or pay a fine of
100. Both went to the penitentiary.
The case of W. M. Butler indicted
or assault and battery with intent to
ill resulted in a mistrial after the jury
ad remained in the room several hours.
The case of Tom Kelly assault with
ntent to kill was called and the defen
lant failed to answer. The case was
ried in his absence, and a.verdict of
ruilty was rendered. The Judge left a
ealed sentence.
Several appeal cases were argued to
be Judge.

Is a New Jail Wanted?
The grand jury in its presentment
ist week made up a good portion of
hat document with considerable stress
n the needs of a new county jail. and

rison without burdening the people

ew thing for a grnd jury to complain
bout the unsanitary condition of the
ail, and all they have said about it is
unded upon facts, but the grand jury
a made up of only a small proportion of

o go no farther than suggest. The
Luestion of building a new jail was sub
itted to the taxpayers, and by a very
ecissive majority the taxpayers refused
o be taxed for such a purpose. The
apresentatives and county officials are
sound by this instruction from the tax
ayers, because every officer pledged
iimself to abide the result of that

We agree with the complaint of the
resent and former grand juries, but
rhat can the officers do when they are
orbidden by the people. The Repre
entatives are not elected to represent
pand juries, they are elected to repre
ent the people as a whole, and when
hey receive positive instructions they

ell for members of a grand jury
o complain to the court, but how

tot surprise us to know that some of
he members of grand juries that have

ew jail is needed, and we. believe a

rer~y appreciably felt, but we cannot
ee how the present delegation can do

he people of Clarendon will have a
nass meeting, with a representative at
endance and at this meeting they will

uilding of a new jail, we believe the
Representatives will be able to do

he Representatives we feel it to be our
ity to let the building of a new jail

:>uilt at a cost of about $5000, and by
mthorizing the Commissioners to issue

y'ears we can rid ourselves of the humil

:ounty levy is the lowest it has been in

ebtedness-all of the old debts have
been paid, and if it is found that we

ant levy of 3 mills by adding an extra
mill for jail purposes, the jail can be
built, and the slight addition to the
taxes will not be felt even by the larg
est taxpayers. If the people are in
earnest about this matter they are the
ynes to speak out, for at present all of
ihe authorities are tied down by the
pledge taken in the primary and can do
tothing.
