We regret to hear of serious opposi

public spirited citizens of Clarendon
and vicinity want to establish. When
this district was about to be formed
there was very little opposition from
those who were likely to lose positions
as teachers, selfishness had nothing
whatever to do %ith our case and we
hope that selfishness is not prompting
opposition in Clarendon.

Sons of Veterans.
The Association of Sons of Con'feder
ite Veterans met in the court house
last Saturday with a fine attendance
nd considerable interest in the trip to
Columbia was manifested.
The camp was called to order by
ommander J. H. Lesesne, who appro
priatelv stated the object of the meet
ing, and the following officers were
lected for the ensuing term:
J H. Lesesne, Commander.
W. M. Plowden. Vice Commander.
J. M. Windham,Secretary-Treasurer.
J. H. McKnight, Adjutant.
Rev. P. B. Wells, Chaplain.
Dr. C. B. Geiger, Surgeon.
Hon. M. C. Galluchat gave the young
nen a talk in which he gave a resume
>f the work of the General Assembly
vith regard to pension legislation. He
old them that the House voted for
200,000 appropriation for Confederate
>ensions, and this was brought about
>y the Sons of Veterans in that body.
rhe Veterans themselves asked for
150.000, but their sons went them $50,
)00 more. The appropriation passed
be House, but the Senate compromised
)v reducing the amount to $150,000:
Sat Clarendon's Senator voted against
he $200,000 because he was opposed to
'aising the taxes; the Senator was con
cientious in this, and he was not com
)laining, but he would tell the foung
nen, they had it in their power to get
rore money for the pensioners: they
hould increase their numbers by per
uading every son of a Confederate sol
ier to join a camp and then see to it
hat care is exercised in the selection,
>f Representatives; they should select
or their Representatives sons of vet
'rans, and if they did the pension fund
ould be increased to $400,000.
At tioe conclusion of Mr. Galluchat's
peech the following delegates were
lected to attend the reunion at Colum
ia which begins today: J. H. Lesesne.
. H. McKnight, W. R. Dingle, S. W.
Icntosh. Alternates-W. M. Plow
en, E. S. Kennedy. A. L. Lesesne, S.
di. Reardon.
The chair invit'" Capt. D. J. Brad
iam to address the .camp and the invi
ation was readily accepted. Captain
3radham is at his best when he has an
pportunity to talk for the Confederate
ldier, andi on this occasion the invita
ion to address the "Sons" acted as an
nspiration to him and he gave them a
*ens~ible, eloquent and patriotic, talk.
['he captain was disposed to criticise
Vrtions of Mr. Galluchat's speech anQ
Ldvised the young men not to ask for
nreasonable things: the Legislature
iad been kind to the Confederate pen
~ioners, and had voted for all that was:
isked of them, but if they asked for un
'easonable legislation it would do their
tause harm, and it was because of reck
ess enthusiasm or politics, that the pen
ion appropriation is now hung up
wating a judicial decision, and he
eared that the money would not get
1ere in time for the Veterans to go to
olumbia. He regarded the joint reso-I
ution relating to transportation and1
ree admission to the Charleston Expo
ition all bosh and that no free trans
ortation could be required of the rail
-oads, it was unreasonable to expect it.
Ie did not want to see politics injected I
n these organizations and. it should be
tept out.
Captain Bradham spoke feelingly and
tt the conclusion of his speech he was
varmly cheered.

Merit Will Assert Itself.
Our Dress Making Department, under the supervision of Miss MamieT
msley, is gaining favor every day, and it is because her work has merit
>ut it. She gets styles on garments that noother dress maker in these
ets can get on a dress, and while we charge a little more thair the usual
es paid for dress making here, yet when the materials are bought at
store we make dresses just as cheap as they are made elsewhere.
Bring your dresses to us to make. Satisfaction guaranteed.
