Elbert Davis' place last week. It was the same old story of the mother leaving the children i'n the house and coming back to find one of\ them burnt up. The Commoner is not a newspaper in the sense of heralding dispatches and contains not an advertisement, but it contains the pith and substance of dem ocratic principles. Loryea drug store. 6 Smallpox is on the spread again throughout the State and the Legisla ture got rattled a few days ago and wanted to adjourn to another town, but finally upon the statement of the Col umbia board cf health that there were only two genuire cases in the city they became reconciled. No eases are re ported from Clarendon yet. but they may be expected. Vaccination is the only way to stamp out the trouble and the town authorities might well take some action looking to compulsory vac cination. Loryea drug store. 6 A legal question has arisen concern ing the grand jury in consequence of the October term of court not being held. The law provides that at the last term of the court in each year six mem bers of the grand jury shall be drawn from the eighteen and who with twelve new ones. shall constitute the grand jury for the coming year. As we had no court last fall the six hold-over jurors were not drawn. and now the question arises as to whether eighteen new ones should be drawn for this year, or the old jury assembled and six of the number be drawn to serve with twelve new ones. To an unprofessional mind it world seem that inasmuch as a grand jury are considered to be the grand jury of the county until they are discharged. or their successors sworn in. the grand jury of 1900 is still the grand jury of the ceunty, and will be until six of their nnmber are drawn to serve for the present year. along with twelve new ones. Should this be de cided to be the case it would seem that all of the old jury would have to appear at the March term of the court, so that six of their number may be drawn to hold over and the remaining twelve discharged.
