Emancipation day was celebrated by
the colored folks yesterday. A large
crowd gathered at the court house and
listened to a well prep~ared and deliv
ered speech from J. H. Fordham, Esq..
of Orangeburg. It was a gala occasion
and the negroes in all their rejoicing
behaved themselves in a very credita
ble manner. There was no boisterous
ness, no drunkenness and nothing to
mar their pleasur'e, unless it was in the
'realization that the Manning brass
band which furnished the music for the
occasion has not made much headway
in the way of learning new tunes.
