WILL WE LOSE?
The agitation of the question
of cutting down the South's rep
resentation in Congress, and of
course, its vote in the electoral
college, is becoming so serious
that we fear its influence on the
-nqv Congres. One of the most
influential Republican organs in
the country speaks of the matter
as follows:
"We have only the best of feelings
for the South and we sympathize with
it in the burden it bears in the shape
of the negro question. But. we put it
to them candidly whether they really
think it fair that they should have such
inordinate power in proportion to their
voting strength. The six States. Mis
sissippi. Louisiana. South Carolina.
North Carolina. Georgia and Arkansas.
with nearly fifty Congressman, cast
altogether about the same number of
votes as the single State of Maryland
with only six Congressman. This can
not be right."
Notwithstanding the strong
influences which may be brought
to bear to cut down our repre
sentation, there is a strong ele
ment in the Republican party
opposed to the scheme: they are
opposed to stirring up the color
question, and they regard the
"bloody shirt" as having out
li ed its usefulness. Among
ti lse who are said to be opposed
to the scheme, is President Mc
Kinley, and if the extremists un
dertake to press it, he will quiet
ly use his influence against it.
President Mc <inley is not
much of a believe- in having the
negro a factor in politics and, it
is his wish to see a strong white
lmans Republican party built up
in the South: to do this, he will
invite a good element o)f white
men in the South to join in the
control of National politics.
Already there is an element in
this State who, had they voted
according to their convict'ons,
would have cast their votes in
the recent election for McKinley:
in the cities and milling sections
this feeling is growing. These
men have always been, and are
still, Democrats, but they believe
the time has come when a man
should vote according to his own
convictions, and not at the dic
tation of party leaders. These
men believe in the gold standard,
they also approve of McKinley's
inter-national policy. They re
gard the leaders in the Demo
cratic party as hugging anti
quated ideas, and too far behind
in this progressive age. In other
words,a large portion of the busi
ness element in the State who hold
views at variance with the Dem
ocratic party as now organized,
is restless under present condi
tions, and are ready to join in a
movement which will put forward
lead.ers that will stop weeping
over the ashes of the forefathers,
and come square out into the
procession of advanced thought.
If a bold leader who can grasp
conditions as they exist, whose
sincerity cannot be questioned
presents himself, this element
will follow him, and in a very
few years, that influence will
p~ermeate every nook and corner
in the State. None realize this
more than the better element of
Republicans, and to encourage
the formation of a white man's
progressive party, they will en
deavor to hold in check the ex
tremists of their own party, and
this may save the South's rep
resentation in Congress.
There is some question just
what Roosevelt will do as Vice
President. Just wait and see!
What he will do will be a plenty.
The alleged woman who threw
an axe at Emperor William and
hit his carriage was probably a
man in disguise. No woman
could have thrown that straig~ht.
Croker declared that he in
tended to drive out vice, and im
mediately started for Europe.
We didn't expe -t him to take
himself at his word quite as
quickly as that.
British bankers are now bor
rowing gold in New York so as
to be able to take the next gov
ernent loan offered by the
British government and thus
prevent its being floated in this
r-rmntry.
It is something of a problem
whether the Republican victory
in Utah "just happened," or
whether it was due to the con
tirmation by the President of the
Sulu treaty recognizing polyga
my in the Philippines.

Letter to S. I. TillFrom Santa Claus.
HOME OF SANTA CLAUS. November 20, 1900.
MR. S. I. TILL, Proprietor Racket Store, Manning. S. C.
DEAR SIR:
As Christmas is near at hand, and that is a time when all the Dear Lit
tie Children will be made happy. You know I am a long ways from you, and I
have thousands and thousands of little presents for the children. Now, Till,
even as far as I am from you, I can hear every day of iow Cheap you are sell
ing everything and how much good you are doing for the folks that haven't but
little money.
I heard one man say he could buy a pair of Shoes from you for $1 that he
had to pay $1.25 for at other places, and I heard one lady say she could buy a
Hat from you 50c Cheaper than other places, and another lady says that one
man says that if she bought a hat from you she would get trash, but that lady
told him that you sold your trash a lot Cheaper than he did his.
Now. Till, I am going to do something this year that I have never done be
fore, but as you are selling everything so Cheap and your Racket Store is the
right place for the Children, I am going to leave my home in a few days with
all these presents, and I will bring them right straight to Your Store and leave
them there, and you must write and tell all the Children to go there and see
these Goods on or after Thanksgiving Day, as it will take me until then to get
there, and I am going to bring something for every one in the whole county,
and something that will do for Fathers, Mothers, Brothers, Sisters, Lovers and
Sweethearts, and above all, the Dear Little Children. Now you tell the Chil
dren to come to Your Store and look at the little things, then go home and
write me a letter and let their Fathers or Mothers give to you for me, and then
on Chrismas Eve Night I will bring it to them. Now don't you lose any of
their letters to me, as always heretofore I never did get their letters and I did
not know what they wanted, and some of them got what they did not want.
Now, Till, you must treat the Children like you do all of your trade, and I
want to continue to bear about how Cheap you sell.
Remember, I will bring you all the Fireworks you want too. Your store
will be my Headquarters, as I will leave all my Goods there with you.
Yours respectfully,
SANTA CLAUS.
N. B.-I ask that you print this letter in TuF MANNING TIMES, so they
will all know where to find my Goods, and to know where the only Cheap Cash

It is conceded to us by all that our stock of Fine Dress Goods and Trimmings
is the largest and most varied carried by any house in the county and our prices
are the lowest. If you need a nice dress and want nice suitable trimmings for
it you can't find a better place to buy than at our store.
FINE MILLINERY.
Year after year has marked a steady increase in our Millinery trade and we
attribute much of our success to the high class of goods we handle, for if there
is any one thing a lady wants up-to-date it is her hat and dress. We can go into
the markets any time and buy up a lot of riff-raff, out of style goods at a mere
song and offer it as first class goods, but this sort of a joke won't work here, for
our ladies keep up too close with the fashion journals. Fresh, first class Milli
nery sold at reasonable prices is bound to win every time.
