The election throughout the United States yesterday proved conclusively that the Republican party is entrenched, and that the voters endorse President McKin lv's course. Bryan made gains in New York and other States, but those gains were not suffi cient to do him any good. The business element throughout the Union, regardless of party affili ations have, by their votes, made it clear that they favor expan sion, and that they want the na tional administration to continue on in the work already begun. McKinley defeats Bryan by a larger majority than he did four years ago, and we believe he would have defeated any other Democrat. Bryan made a gal lant fight for the Democracy and although defeated his name will go down in history as a states man who held principle above the dollar, and the Constitution as a sacred heirloom. It was not the money question, nor was it any lack of confidence in Bryan that brought disaster to the Democratic party. In our opinion the overwhelming victo ry of Republican party can be at tributed to the ei. of prosperity which we have had the past three years, and the reluctance of the people making a change under such circumstances. From the reports already in, McKinley has 266 electoral votes and Bryan 142. and ten States more to hear from, but if Bryan was to get the electoral votes in the remaining States, which he will not get, it will do him no good. We predict that in our next State election, the expansion question will be an issue in South Carolhna, and the business ele ment in the State will record their votes for the candidates representing that issue. There are many Democrats in South Carolina today, convinced that the reaching out of our govern ment is for the best interests of the country and many believe that the opening up-and develop ing of China and the Philippines will be advantageous to the South. If however, there should come a financial depression during President McKinley's second term, the Democrat's may stand some chance of coming into con trol four years from now, but if the country remains prosperous, there will be a general breaking up of the Democratic party and new alignments will be formed. THE STATE FAIR. The State fair was the great est success ever known since the organization of the South Caro lina Agricultural Assotiation. The crowds were immense, the exhibits plentiful and grand, the racing was good and the order was fine. We heard of no pick pocketing so usual where such large crowds congregate, and everybody that went came away with praises for the fair and its excellent management. One of the greatest attractions was Charleston mingling with the up-country, and we honestly believe that this co-mingling has done much towards wiping out the old sectional lines, and that the up-country and low country will work as a unit to make the Interstate Exposition to be held in Charleston next year a suc cess. The electric booth exhib ited by the Exposition commit tee was one of the most beauti ful pieces of mechanical art we have ever seen and at all hours of the day and night great crowds were attracted to it. The promoters of the Exposi tion did a wise thing in going to Columbia, and the effect of the vIsit of the Charlestonians will be of great advantage to the City-by-the-Sea. it would take up too much space to elaborate and do the fair justice, but it is due the man agement to say that never be fore in the history of the State have we ever read or seen where came away so unanimous in their praises. The arrangements were perfect and every attention pos sible was shown to visitors. It was certainly a week of profit and pleasure. STATE OF OHIO. CITY ->F To.Et t. LUCAS COUNTY. FRANK J. If you or your friends have this disease, you know how disagreeable it is. Its symtoms are inflamed eyes, throbbing temples, ringing noises in the ears, headaches, capricious appetite, and constant dis charge of mucus. Fortunately its cure is not a question of what you will give, but what you will take. If you will take Hood's Sarsaparilla, the great constitutional remedy, which thorough ly purifies, enriches and vitalizes the blood, you may expect to be completely and permanently cured. The good blood which Hood's Sarsaparilla makes, reaching the delicate passages of the mucous membrane. soothes and re builds the tissues and ultimately cures all synptons of catarrh. If silence is golden, that may account for the scarcity of female millionaires. You know What You Are Taking When you take Grove's Tasteless Chill Tonlic because the formula is plainly printed on every bottle showing that it is simply Iron~and Quinine in a tasteless form.
