Last Saturday. Peter Davis. colored,
one of the hands in the employ of the
Santee Cypress Lumber Co.. was found
dead in the denot at itimini. An in
quest was held by 31agistrate Stackand
a verdict was rendered that the de
ceased came to his death from natural
causes.

A very pleasant entertainment was
iven at Packsville last Friday night
for the benefit of purchasing an organ
for the school. After the exercises,

were served, and the treasury was ben

school building has recently been
painted, and from the tower floats a
United States flag. Prof. Smith the

There is a colored man, Daniel liar
vin, a citizen of this county, Avho has
paid all of his debts, has forty bales of
cotton on hand and $800 in bank. How
is that for good work and a show of
what thrift, honesty and energy will do?
We are informed that a couple of
years ago this same man finished pay
ing for the place on which he lives and
that he made his money by hard work
and judicious management. He does
not lose time attending political gath
erings and hot suppers; his whole time
is devoted to his business and he is said
to be an excellent neighbor.
Read H. Harby's advertisement in
another column, in which he gives his
reasons for advertising. The people of
this county know that when Harby says

has horses, buggies, wagons, lime, hay

We have received a letter from the
"Southern Bell Telephone and Tele
graph Company" making inquiries re
lating to running of telephone lines in
this town and county, asking informa
tion with regard to distances, number
of " phones " used, amount invested in
present lines, whether or not the com
pany now operating has a franchise,
and' about how many "'phones " could
be utilized in the county if rates were
low. We have not replied as yet, think
ing best to confer with people living in
various sections. As far as the town is
concerned we are satisfied the new com
pany will be patronized, be cause the
service will be first class, day and all
night, and besides, this company will
give the advantage of long distance
'phones." The Southern Bell Com
pany has been sending men out pros
pecting for some time and so has the
Gordon Company. One of the latter
was here last week, and wye hope that
both, which are competing lines, will
run their wires through this town and
county.
Robbed the Grave.
A startling incident, of which Mr. John Oliver
of Philadelphia was the subject, is narrated by
him as follows: "I was in a most dreadful condi
tion. My skin was almost yellow, eyes sunken.
tongue coated, pain continually in back and
sides, no appetite-gradually growing weaker
day by day. Three physicians had given me up.

The Methodist church was crowded
to overflowing last Thursday evening
to witness the marriage of Mr. Joseph
Legrand Wells and Miss Roberta New
ton Wells. For an hour before the an
nounced time, in order to be certain of
seats, a large crowd gathered and
waited on the outside for~ the doors to
open, when at last they were opened,
the ushers were kept busy for a consid
erable time seating the large concourse
of friends and relatives. The pulpit
and chancel were beautifully decorated
with white and green. At the appoint
ed hour the wedding march played by
Mrs. J. L. Wilson. wvas the signal for
the approach of the wedding party.
The attendants entered, the ladies up
the right aisle, holding in their hands
beautiful bouquets of carnations,
and the gentlemen up the left: the
-ide came in on the arm of her sister
Miss Mayme Wells, and the groom en
tered upon the arm of Mr. Joseph
Sprott. Jr~. The attendants took their
positions behind the chancel facing
the audience. The bride and groomi
were proceded by little gir'ls, Lottie
Hall. Helen Thames. May Wells and
Marion Wells, each bearing baskets of
flowers. As the bridal couple met at
the chancel, they joined arms and faced
Rev. P. B. Wells the officiating minis
ter, who performed the ceremony. Af

ning Colored Graded School is in ses

up to a worthy place among the graded
schools of the State, and in order to do
this we ask the hearty co-operation of
parents and friends.
We must rise to an appreciation of
the educational advantages offered our
boys and girls, for ignorance is recog
nized as a curse-a menace to civiliza
tion.
It is the duty of eves; parent and
every one else interested in a commu
nity to be jealous of the advantages of

of that community to the extent of de
siring to see them bettered. The op

dren to school. Will you lose the priv
ilegey It is important that every child
be given the advantages offered for an
education. You have a corps of faith
ful and efficient teachers in the persons

in grades as far as the nigh School as
