The fertilizer combines are
preparing to bleed the farmers
by raising the prices of their
goods, and unless there is a com
bine on the part of the farmers
to resist this oppression, we look
for a raise of not less than 25 per
cent. We would advise every
farmer to refuse to put one dol
lar in fertilizers if the prices are
raised, and the "Trust" will find
that with no market for their
adulteraied product, something
must be done to move the stuff
out of their warehouses. In the
matter of fertilizers the farmer
has the advantage if he will use
it: the Trust can put millions of
dollars into the manufacture of
the stuff, and for them to get
their money back it must be con
sumed by the farmer; the farmer
is not compelled to use fertilizer,
of course if he uses none his
crop may not be as large, but it
is better for him to make less
crop and keep out of debt, than
to pay an exorbitant price for
trust manufactured fertilizer,
and probably go in debt to get it.
When it comes to provisions,
the speculator has a decided ad
vantage, because the farmer,like
all other classes must eat, and
he is compelled to throw him-.
self down before the Trust jug
gernaut aind suffer the grinding
pangs of merciless greed. Shy
locks that manipulate the price of
wheat and pork as a child manip
ulates a toy, can bring into sub
jection the farmer, and force him
to pay homage to them. The
combined power of wealth, back -
ed up national legislation, can
force subjection to its will when
it comes to the purchase of uten
sils, implements, building mater
ial and such other things as the
farmer must have, and that are
indispensible. But when it comes
to fertilizer, the farmers if they
will stand together with the
same firmness as was exhibited
by the coal strikers in Pennsyl
vania, and West Virginia, they
can prevent the imposition which
we believe the fertilizer Trust is
fixing to impose.
There is only one way for this
to be done, and that is for every
farmer who uses manufactured
fertilizers, to determine to re
sist, by refusing to use, any fer
tilizer upon which the price has
been raised. If this is done the
effect will be the saving of thous
ands of dollars in the pockets of
the farmers.
GOOD ADVICE.
President Thomas E. Miller, of
the State Colored Agricultural
and Mechanical College, deliv
ered an address in. Anderson last
Saturday which was full of good
sense, but the most striking part
of the address was his remarks
about the rent system. He said
the present rent system was a
curse to both white and black,
and "If the people of South Car
olina are guilty of anything, they
are guilty of keeping their lands
poor, and not any oppression of
the negro. The trouble was not
in high rents but because the
tenure of lands was so uncertain.
The white landlords must soon
see that it is to their advantange
to have the tenure for at least
ten years. Then the tenant
could reap the rewards of any
improvement of the land he rent
ed. As it is now the tenure was
so ucertain that the tenant let
the land go to waste. He want
edl the South to follow the exam
pie of Fram . and Germany,
where the te nure was long and
conseqluently landlord and peas
ant farmer were independent and
successful."
There is much in this view.
and the land owners will hav-e
this very problem to encounter.
Instead of renting out their lands
to a do-less,shiftless family, who
their own protection only lease
for a term of years to a family
that want a home and are willing
to work to keep it. It would be
more profitable to rent the lands
for less money to a working fan
ily, and have the lands improv
ed, than to get more rent from
one who is only a temporary te
nant, and bleeds the land to
death.
IS "THE STATE" A "RAD"?
The editor of The State has received
a request from the Republican State
committee of Indiana for a contribution
to it- campaign fund and a nice patent
envelope to forward it in. Whether
the joke is on the committee or on him
we are not prepared to decide, but it is
at least easy to determine that the ap
peal has reached the wrong editor.
Columbia State.
Well now, we do not know so
much about that. The Repub
lican State committee of Indiana,
no doubt read the eci'torials of
"The State" in connection with
Governor McSweeney's course
in dismissing from the State
militia a company of colored sol
diers in the city of Columbia
sometime last month, we think
just before the second primary,
and from the tenor of the State's
editorials that Indiana commit
tee probably came to the conclu
sion, that the State's editor was
in close sympathy with the color
ed soldiers, and of course the
Republican party: as a conse
quence, it felt that it had a right
to call upon him for a money
contribution to aid the party of
the colored man, as that editor
advocated his cause so eloquent
ly when he thought a Democratic
governor was taking advantage
of his position to disarm the col
ored militia.
Bryan's second trip to New
York was the greatest political
demonstration ever given to a
candidate for political honors.
It surpassed the first visit by
far, and even many prominent
Republicans secured good points
of vantage where they could see
for themselves with what regard
the masses are holding William
Jennings Bryan.
On the same night Stevenson
was the attraction in Chicago,
and the ovation given to him
was fully as earnest if not as
large as that given by the New
Yorkers to his chief. There is no
doubt about it, Bryan and Steven
son are putting up a good fight
for the Democracy, and if the
voters controlled their ownvotes,
their election would be assured,
but the votes of the manufactur
ing and mining districts of the
North, and the purchasable vote
of the West are manipulated by
campaign funds, and it is hard
to say which party can get in
among them first, and stay the
longest. It will take money to
get votes in those sections were
foreigners make up a large pro
portion of the voting population;
they have no interest in the gov
ernment, and the crowd that
pays the most usually gets the
vote.

of the partisan press, the Demo
