Chewning of Panola was the subject of a very serious surgical operation last Monday at Dr. Baker's infirmary in Sumter. Died last Sunday at Privateer Mr. Elisha Hodge aged about 80 years. Mr. Hodge was the oldest survivor of Co. H. 5th, S. C. calvary commanded by Captain Skinner. H. Clark. The recent rains have done untold damage to the roads and bridges of this county and the County Supervisor is anxious for the road overseers to order out all of the hatnds liable to road duty that work on the highways may be com menced at once. Mr. Shorter was in Manning Monday and in reply to our question, said the report was not true; that some one had given the dog a dose of ground glass and the dog was suffering from it, and to relieve i- he had the dog killed. His child was not bitten at all. W. H. Shipman. Beardsley. Minn.. under oath. says he suffered from dyspepsia for twenty-live years. Doctors and dieting gave but. little re lief. In the court house last Friday eve ning a meeting was hold for the par pose of considering the advisability of of organizing a miliitary company. The attendance was fairly good and quite a number expressed a desire to join. Mr. J. Harry Lesesne presided over the meeting and committees were ap pointed for enlistment and conferring with the State authorities. This was the experience of a young couple in this county not many'days ago, and the young fellow hearing the report, made haste to reach the editor, lest he might chronicle the event which never happened. The Connor Rifles Having Trouble. There is trouble in the camp of the Connor Mounted Rifies which may re sult with unpleasantness. Last Saturday at Packsville the com pany held a m'eeting at wvhich thirty six members were present. The State's militia appropriation brought on a heated discussion and Capt. D. E. Wells refused to turn the money received from the State over to the men. as had been the custom heretofore, Captain Wells claiming that he was advised to hold the money to be expended for com pany purposes. The rule has been that when the money came from the State. for each man to receive his portion. Captain Wells lives in the Privateer section and he wants the company to have its drills near his home: the men, howevr, prefer Packsville, and many of them think he is holding the money to force them to go to Privateer. The men are considerably worked up over the affair, and at their next meet in g they propose to take such steps as will require the Adjutant General to take some action. Some of the men are in favor of expelling Captain Wells from the company's membership and petition the State authorities to order a courtartial. Editor The .MIanning Times: The Summerton Library Association held its regular meeting at the resi dence of Rev. M. A. Connors last eve ning. [janlay Notice of Reorganizations In accordance with the requirements of the constitution of the Democratic party of the South Carolina, there will be a convention held in Manning at the court house on the 7th, day of May, for the purpose of electing a county chair man, a member of the State Democratic Executive Committee, and to send del egates to a State convention which will be held in Columbia for the purpose of electing delegates to the National con vention, and to attend to other business. The Democratic clubs throughout the county will assemble at their respective places of meeting on the 28th, day of April to reorganize, elect officers, a member of the county executive com mittee, and to elect delegates to the county convention to be held in Man ning on the 7th, day of May. The del egates will be elected on a basis of one delegate for every 25 names on club roll, and one delegate for the majority fractional part of said roll.
