About 4 o'clock last Saturday morn
ing the barn and stables of Mrs. S. F.
Sprott near Jordan was discovered on
fire, and too late to save anything at
all. When the fire was discovered the
buildings were so far consumed within
that they were ready to collapse, and
the horses and mules were already
dead. There was no insurance on this
property and the loss is severe, about
$2500. There were destroyed four
head of mules, four head of horses, a
large quantity of grain and forage,
20 tons of fertilizer, a reaper and mower
nd other things. The origin of the
fire is unknown, and it is suspected
that it might be the work of an incen
diary. from the fact that the fire had
the appearance of having started from
the rear. If it was an incendiary fire,
we hope steps will be taken at once to
discover the fiend, who would thus go,
under the cover of night and destroy
the pr-operty of a widow.

Alcolu was thrown into a fever of
excitement last Friday, by the shooting
of a negro. The circumstances are,
that on last Friday, Mr. J. R. Rose
had charge of Alderman's train, and
a negro by the name of Walter Lowrey
gave Mr. Rose some impudence. Rose
ordered him off the train at DuRant's
crossing, but Lowrey refused to go.
There was a lady on the engine, and
the negro became very offensive in his
language: When they reached Alcolu
Lowrey attempted to shoot Mr. Rose,
and dia fire at him. Rose drew a pistol
and shot the negro. the ball taking
effect in the neck. The negroe's about
the mill quit work, and threatened to
kill Rose, and at one time things looked
squally, Mr. Rose came on over to Man
ning to be on hand in case the negro
died, that he might surrender to the
sheriff. Lowrev was not -as seriously
hurt as was at first supposed, and it is
thought he will get well.
The Best Remedy for Rheumatism.
QUICK RELIEF FRON PAIN.
All who use Chamberlain's Pain Balm for

this Mr. D. N. Sinks, of Troy, Ohio. says:
-Some time ago I had a severe attack of rheu

druggists of this place. to try Chamberlain's

A Sad Death.
One of the saddest events we have
ever been called upon to chronicle, oc
cured at Clinton S. C. last Saturday,
and it only goes to show how uncertain
life is. On the 20th day of March this
year, a bright and happy young man
from the town of Clinton came to Alco
lu to claim the hand of his intended
bride, and the next day at the residence
of Mr. J. J. Nettles, Rev. James Mc
Dowell performed the marriage ser
vice for Job T. Boozer and Miss
Alys Cole. The bride was a graduate
of the Thornwell Orphanage, and after
the couple were made man and wife
they left for Clinton to fight life's battle
together.
Letters to friends came back convey
ing the happiness of the orphan-bride
in her new home, with her hus-.
band-protector, when all at once, the
hand of affliction was laid heavily upon
the groom, pneumonia caught him in
its grasp, and before the honey-moon
was over, death came and robbed the
young bride of her joy. This is indeed
a sad case: here was a girl left an or
phan when young, and after being
reared by the hand of benevolence, and
reaching woman-hood, she marries and
is so suddenly brought under the chas
tening rod.

Second Attempt at Suicide.
Sumter, April 13.-Miss Mattie Bry
ant, of Clarendon county, who attempt
ed to commit suicide at Manning a few
months ago, came to this city on Wed
nesday and that night again made an
unsuccessful effort to kill herself.
On the first occasion she drank two
ounces of iaudanum, but she was saved
by prompt medical attention. This
time she took five grains of morphine
and that she is alive is due to the fact
that she took an overdose, which nau
seated her and caused vomiting. She
was quite sick at the Jervey House,
where she was staying all of Wednes
day night aud yesterday, but today is
said to be out of danger.
As soon as it became known that she
was ill a doctor was called, and since
then she has been constantly watched
to prevent a repetition of the attempt at
self-destruction. She is Qnly 18 or 20
years old.
