The campaign will soon be in full blast, auna about, the only issue for con sideration is the one which a few dis gruntled politicians have fanned into flame by aligning themselves with a still fewer number of men who are sin cere in their professions. In nearly every instance, where a politician is advocating a Prohibition issue, he was the rejected or defeated candidate at some previous campaign. and his com ing forward again in politics is to re coup his lost prestige. There are men who sincerely believe that the country's condition would be benefitted if upon the Statute books of the State there could be placed a law prohibiting the sale of intoxicating liquors: these men are religiously sin cere in such a belief and will go to great lengths to accomplish such al result. They believe it is their relig ious duty to vote for Prohibition with out regard for results, and they would vote for anything labeled Prohibition. Then there is another class, who laugh in their sleeves at the idea of Prohibi tion, and will join in with those who are sincere. This class can not drop their prejudice against the Dispensary law, because it drove them out of a profitable business, _rd they hava ever since bedn doing all in their power, not only to encourage the violation of the law, but in many instances, have been violators of the law itself. They will be found in the ranks of the Prohibi tionists voting to get a Prohibition law upon the Statute books: are these peo ple without method? Will any man doubt that they see with a Prohibition law on the Statute books it puts them in a surer position to sell liquor with out restraint? The advocates of Pro hibition will contend that if the law is adopted they will see after, and to its enforcement, but men of observing minds know full well that when such a: law is enacted, then it will be a case of what iseverybody's business is nobody 's' business, and the law will be a farce. Even the Dispensary law finds the greatest of difficulties to enforce. The officers will try and do their duty. ar rests will be made. the testimony often: conclusive, and juries made up of Pro hibitionists, Dispensaryites, and liquor men, either disagree or acquit-con victions are rare. The dispensary law has accomplished much good. and the longer it is tried the more good in the way of temper-; ance does it accomplish. The records of the various towns and cities where the dispensary has had anything like a chance, show a yearly decrease in the: "drunks and disorderlies," and the county records all over the State show a decrease in crime. We are convinced that the dispensary is the best way to handle liquor. We believe it is utterly impossible to stop its consumption, and restricted as it is. and becoming more so every year: it is fast becoming a promoter of temper ance. The political Prohibitionists are sim ply using the influence of a few good men to further their political desig'ns and they do not expect to event see a prohibition law enacted. but their main hope is for political advantage which they either know they cannot secure as things are now, or they have tried and failed. HAS CRANE GOT THE DEAD WOOD ON 'CHARTESTON? Rev. Arthur Crane, who held a series of meetings last fall in the Baptist' Church in this place, has received a. call to the First Baptist Church in Charleston. and as its pastor, he has undertaken to create a rattle among the dry bones, by doing a detective or spy work in the haunts of vice in that city, and then from his pulpit to give out sensations which will, for a while, make his church the "grand attrac tion.'' Last Sunday. Mr. Crane deliv-; ered a sermon, in which he said a great, many truths about the conditions ex isting in Charleston. He told about the liquor dens, houses of ill fame, gambling resorts, and ridiculed the city authorities for permitting these thingsj to exist, but throughout his entire re-; marks as published, he did not tell any thing new, or but what has been known to every citizen. His entire sermon is but an imitation of the harangues that can be heard nightly by "slum preach ers'' in most any city up North. We hope that Mr. Crane will be able to ac complish good in the "Old City by the Sea," but we think after he has played his Parkhurst roil a few weeks the peo ple will tire of the sensation, and will be anxious to swap a filth-advertiser for religion. There are certain institu tions permitted to exist in cities, which to the innocent may be regarded hor rible, but they are permitted. because in the judgment of men who make the human race a study, they are preven tives of things more horrible. Were it not for these institutions, there is no telling the amount of sorrow that would be brought to households. the rm and degradation that would follow theI driving of them out. A preacher cant very well get up and denounce what appears to be an evil, but if his hearers will stop and refleet, they will conme to. the conclusion that it is better to put up with "a necessary evil'' and let the responsibility rest where it will, than commit a more grievous error through~ religious zeal. two weeks. and whn hie first began his preclhing the congregations were some what impressed with hismannerof call ing -a spade. a spade," but before he finished his engagement, it was soon realized that he was a disappointment. and his influence for good would be limited. We have heard that a certain minister of this town said. --Crane did more harm than I will be able to undo in twelve months. What Mr. Crane said about the gambling hells and the whiskey shliols is true. and we ag-ree with him. but if he is in real earuest to put a stop to the existence of these inititlt i0Lt. it ,trike5 us his expostlres would b1 more cffev tive in a court rooI. or at a citiZen's meeting. Sensational sermons, especi ally where they deal in the crimes and vices of a city. have no effect, other than to draw the curious for a short while into swelling up the congrega tions. This question is yet to be solved, and it will not be until after the meeting of the Convention on the 4th day of July, that the real canvass for votes will begin. The platform adopted in 1896. laid special stress on the money question. which resulted in bringing about a di vision of our forces. many of whom had heretofore affiliated with the Demo cracy went into the Independant, or "Gold" camps. while others went over. bag and baggage to the Republican party. aud as a consequence it was a house divided against itself and defeat was the result. Had Bryan been elected with a Congress to fit the principles enunciated in the Chicago platform the money question would have been set tled satisfactory to the Democratic party, but he was defeated, and with his defeat the Republicans made such gains in the Senate of the United States that the Chicago platform money plank is now an impossibility, even if every Congressman to be elected this fall favors the 16 to 1 idea. If we are cor rect in this statement, then what would be the use of sticking the 16 to 1 plank in our platform at Kansas City. and thereby keep out of our ranks many who agree with us on everything but the money feature' If we cannot get 16 to 1 because conditions have made it impossible.there is no sense in hugging a delusion,and it should be left out. We are told that notwithstanding the pow er of money. the Democracy has a fight ing chance on a platform against trusts. combinations. synrdicates. impelurialism11. etc.. and if we turn loose our financial idea and make a square fight on other questions the Demnocracy can go mnto te coming conflict in solid phalanx. and whether successful or not it will be a united party, and with a united party against the other side, they will have to keel) their forces firmly togeth er, for if there happens to be any dis sensions in their ranks we will discover the weak point and assail it. Well, suppose they do. what difference would it make? Suppose they don't, would it make any difference? Brvan will be the Demnocratic nomi ne is a certainty, and if the country can be carried ior the Democr'acv at all. Bryan is the man wvho can carry it. bei in our humble judgment. the Rep~ubli eans are not only well organized, but they have so favored the trusts and the monied institutions that they can get all the money they wtant from them to buy up the purchasable vote of the North. East and West. We read where Bryan is received everywhere he goes with enthusiasm. and the impression created is that the voters are tumbling over each other to do him honor and give him promises of support, but it must be remember'ed that in the North, the East. and WVest. the voting system is different from ours. and the voters are made up of different people from ours. In this State we have butthe one party~ and it speaks through its primary: when it has spoken all of us acquiese and support its decision the party primary is virtually the elec tion. In the North, East, and West, there are two well defined political parties, that often change with issues. The voters are made up in many States of a foreign element, who care nothing for our institutions: in fact, their' only ambition is to reap wealth and return to their native homes. These p~eople work in the mines and factories, the very institutions which have recently been given a considerable boost by the present administration, and it matters not how mnuch they hurrah for Bryan; at the public gatherings, or march in the political parades, when election d-ay comes, the Boss in char'ge of each squad of workmen will instruct the voters how to vote and they will vote accordingly. If they should assert a spirit of inde pendence and refuse to be dictated to. there would follow a decrease of wages or other workmen to take their- places. It is in this way the Republican party has entrenehed itself and nothing~ short of a split in their party or a political revolution will oust them. A Remarkable Case. Antioc. Miss.. The commencement sermen was preached at the Home Branch Baptist church Sunday after noon by Rev. J. 0. Gough. who preach ed an able and appropriate sermon from the text. "For without me ye can do nothing." The school exercises were held in the church buildingz the next night. and a program of three hours kept us well entertained. The house was filled to its utmost capacity. and the audience was unusually quiet until a little boy was telling a girl what a sweetheart is. His definition touched that peculiar tendcr cord in our heart4. antd the whole auidience begatn with out accordt t) laugh ing. and when the cur tain fell the reader can guess what the boys and girls were talking about. The exhibition was good and the teacher andl children both deserve great credit. The school under Mliss JIessie Curt is' management has (lone well. The teach er in the beginning of the session seem ed to instill into their youthful minds the importance of an education and they went to work, realizing the im portance of making proper use of their golden opportunities. Besides the les sons in their text hooks. they were taught the importance of Christian ed ucation. This is a part of children's training that is of unspeakable import ance and yet usually but little consider ed, for children have no character of their own tixed and immovable, and being. like sheep. gr'egarious. they readily yield to the impulse of any leaderand follow a multitude to do evil. The Ho~me Branch school has done a good years work and we can say to her vho taught it. 'well done."' The Packsville Academy will close Friday 30th. (losing exercises will be Friday night.
