PUBLI SIES ALL COUNTY AND TIOWN OFFICIAL ADVERTISEMENTS. MANNING, S. C.: W EDNESDAY. JAN. 24, 1900. Sprinig Blooms Are beginning to bud at the W. E. Jenkinson Dry Goods Store. Our dry goods barometer told us last fall that there would be some heavy storms in the dry goods market be fore January, 1900, in the way of sharp and violent advances in prices, consequently we set about at once to place large orders for spring, and to day finds us with enough staple Dry Goods to last us during the spring, and these were bought at from Ic to 1:c per yard cheaper than they can now be bought at, and it is our in tention to give our customers the ad vantage of our good buying. We offer 10,000 yards of Crash for making ladies' skirts and dresses at 6tc per yard which would cost us to day 8Sc to buy it by the case. A beautiful line of Shirt Waist and Shirting Prints at 4c per yard that looks cheap at 3c. Ladies, just call and see the pret tiest line of Percales ever shown in this town. While we have been very fortunate in securing good bargains in dry goods, we have also been very fortunate in placing orders in Shoes and Gent's Clothing. Our line of Shoes is the largest we have ever had at this season of the year and we are prepared to name prices on Shoes and Clothing at least 25 per cent be low the market. See us when you need Dry Goods. W. E. JENKINSON. Notice is hereby given that no advertisements will be hereafter changed in this paper where the copy is brought in later than Sat urdav noon. Our ever genial and courteous friend, the ranking be-chelor of Panola, is always with the ladies and will help them to make the ent.inment a success. It would be a crowning victory for some beautiful maiden of Panola to penetrate the bachelor armor of this gallant colonel with one of Cupid's darts and bring him down. Judge Klugh has just rendered a deci sion which will be of great interest to all graded schools. The , Florence graded schools had levied a supplementary fee of two dollars. for each pupil except where patrons were unable to pay it, and Mr. W. F. Clayton, one of the patrons, refused to pay the fee and carried the matter into the courts. Judge Klugh sustained the graded schools and said that the action of the trustees was constitutional. It is to be regretted that the Manning Guards will have to turn over their guns, uniforms etc., to the State on account of not being able to keep up to the required standard. Captain Lewis and his officers have worked hard to keep up the company but he could not get the proper support, and in the clamor by other companies to get into service and fill up the number that will be recognized by the Adjutant General the Manning Guards were crowd ed out. D 0 Rhamie, Summerton; Dr WV M Brokinton, Manning. Representative Richardson's bill, intro duced in the House and intended to regu late the charges made by warehouses in the sale of tobacco, is a measure proposir g to arrive at an equitable rate of charges, fair both to the warehouse and to the farmer. The schedule of charges heretofore allowed has been unsatisfactory to some, and it is proposed by Mr. Richardson to ascertain from all over the tobacco section of the State the views of both farmers and ware housemen and to arrive at a satisfactory ompromise schedule of charges. Elsewhere will be seen an advertisement by the Manning Grocery Company to the effect that they will sell groceries in un broken packages to the farmers and any others who may wish to bus-. This will mean a great deal to the farmers who want to buy a supply of goods at one time to 'last them for several months, and an op portunity will be offered to get prices they have not known of before. The Manning Grocery Company is madce up of hustling men who deserve to succeed, and they will do much towards bringing trade to Man 'The young ladies of the Panola neigh borhood have in store a rare treat for the public to be rendered at the Panola Acad emy on the evening of the 26th inst., (Fri ay). Editor THE iEs: In your last issue, under the cap tion of "Capital Correspondence," signed "L. A.." we notice comments of an unfavorable nature relative to a telegram which Magistrate A. P. Ragin sent to the Governor, asking for arms. The writer sad that the magistrate was wired to ask for what use lie needed the arms, and as no reply was made, which, after sending that alarming dispatch, left hii open to much criticism, some going so far as to say that he took to the swamp, carrying his fright with him. "L. A." ought to know that it is necessary to establish the truth of a proposition before drawing infer ences, and while Magistrate Ragin doubtless has many sins of omission and commission, yet we propose to state the facts as they occurred, which will fully explain to your readers the attitude of Mr. Ragin. First-Mr. Ragin was advised not to answer the telegram of the Gov ernor because the town council had a conference with Representative H. B. Richardson, who was instructed to see the Governor immediately upon his arrival in Columbia and explain fully the situation and the consequent asking of arms. This he could do more accurately than could have been done by a message. Second-We would like to know who the "some going so far as to say that Mr. Ragin took to the swamp, etc., were. This is the most unkind cut of all. This information certain ly did riot come from a citizen of this place. Really on this line "L. A." is due Mr. Ragin an apology, for he was present and active during the whole trouble, which will be attested by many of our best citizens. Thanking you for your space, I am Yours very truly, A. L. Editor THE TDIES: Please ask Mr. Owens (our "County Supervisor") to ride down in the Santee section of our county and see the road and bridges over "Taw aw," near Mr. Jack Eadon's .home, for if he does I am sure he will see the need of work on them.
