The annnal Gala week festivities are on in full blast in Charleston this week, and hundreds of country visitors are flocking to the old city by the. sea to have a good time. Gala is always a big time with the average Charlestonian, and the co-int-ry folks in the lower section of the State take the oppor tunity of going to town and helping every body have a good time. An unusually at tractive programme has been arranged to extend through the whole week this year, and the good crops of cotton and tobacco in the lower section of the State and the unusually fine prices for cotton will put many folks in position to spend something for pleasure this fall, so that Charleston's Gala week this year bids fair to be one of the best, she has ever had. Clarendon will will be largely represented from all sec tions of the county and especially will Manning be represented. This body met, pursuant to ad journment, in Sumter, S. C., on the 14th inst. At its meeting in Manning 'last month, certain rumors were re ported to it injurious to the charac ter of Rev. J. E. Dunlop, and, al though nothing was brought forwvard that could prove them, yet Presby tery appointed a commission to visit the place where they originated, take testimony, and report back to it. Judge T. B. Fraser, chairman of this commission, with Rev. N. WV. Ed wards, D. D., Rev. WV. J. McKay, 1). D., and Rev. W. W. Mills, members of it, visited Indiantown and spent four days in patiently taking sworn testimony of a number of persons, white and colored. At the late meeting in Sumter, Presbytery received the report of this commission, and heard all of the testimony read, and then, by a vote of 27 to 3, adopted a paper contain ing a preamble and five resolutions, the last two of which are as follows: Resolved 4th. That the ecnfidence which Presbytery has, and has always had, in the integrity and piety of this brother, would in itself, and especially in the face of his stemn oath of innocency, lead them to be lieve that a satisfactory explanatson did ex ist even though it could not be given; but in addition to this, they feel convinced that the explanations that have been given by him, are conclusive, not only in remov-ing all presumption of guilt, but also in pro ducing the strongest conviction of inno Iceony. Resolved 5th. That in view of the con victions thus arrived at, Presbytery sees no cause to pursue the investigation further, but rather to congratulate our brother in his ability to thus vindicate himself; arnd to commend him to the renewed confidence and fellowship of all, whose faith in him may have been affected for the time by these rumors. Thus has this noble and fs~ithful servant of God been exonerated by an overwhelming majority, every one of his ministerial brethren and most of the ruling elders present voting for the resolutions, while only three elders voted against them. Rice preached an excel lent sermon at Jordan on the morn ing of the 12th inst.; also at Bethle hem in the afternoon. The foundation for a new church is being laid at Jordan; the plan is an excellent one and the building, when completed, will be a fine one. Mr. Joe Bird, who has been visiting his mother, Mrs. Hughes, has return ed to Charleston. Mrs. Ellen Grady of Florence coun ty, who has been visiting relatives here and at Davis Station, returned home on the 14th. Miss Lizzie Pouncey of Columbia, who has been teaching the Bethlie hem school, is making her home with the family of Mr. John C. Grahaum. Miss Lizzie is a pleasant addition to our society. We are glad to report her school in fine condition and hope her stay among us will prove pleas ant and profitable. Hon. U. R.
