dent at the church at Jordan last Sunday
by having his leg broken. He was hitching
up a horse when in soine way the horse
stepped on the leg and broke it jubt below
the knee.

Last week Sheriff Bradham returned
from Charleston with John F. Richardson
whom he had arrested by the police there.
Richaidson is said to be quite a desperate

The graded school will open next Mon
day morruing and baseball and other fun
will give place to books and slates. The

Thursday, Octa 1er 5th, will be a great
day for tobacco growers at the People's To
bacco Warehouse. Mr. C. M. Mason, the
genial and energetic manager, is endeavor
ing to make Manning what it should be, a
first class tobacco market, and to do so, he
is constantly seeking inducements for the
people. There is one point he has already
made clear and that is, he is lending his
best efforts to get a: high prices as possi
ble for the patrons of his floors, and not
only this, he is doing business in a genial,
open manner so that all who do business
with him understand his methods. On Oc
tober 5th there will be a prize sale on his
floors and some lively sales may be looked
for. Every tobacco grower should be there.
Parties who contemplate having survey
ing done will take notice that I shall de
vote my entire time to it the coming year
and guarantee satisfaction, both as to work

If Manning only had one or two cotton
factories cotton would bring from a quarter
to a half cent more on the pound. Man
ning is giving the highest market prices,
based upon New York and Liverpool quo
tations, received all along during the day,
but in the up-country towns where there are
numerous factories there is an additional
local demand created by the factories which
makes the staple bring considerably more.
The factories fear higher prices and are
buying a considerable supply ahead. but
already there is talk of factories closing
down until the rise in prices is settled, so
that there is some risk in holding cotton
after it reaches G) and 6i cents. It is some
thing that none of us seem to be able to tell
much about.

No one can deny the fact that Manning
is permanently growing, and is rapidly
becoming one of the most progessive towns
in this part of the State. The Manning of
ten years ago is not the Manning of today.
Right nrw there are four fine two-story
residences in course of erection besides
other building in a small way that is always
going on, and still there is a strong de
mand for houses to rent. Ten years ago
there was nit a pound of leaf tobacco sold
here and now we find our town one of the
best tobacco markets in the State. Ten
years ago for the cotton market prices we
had to depend upon the daily papers,
which always contained the reports that
were at least a day old and it mattered not
whether cotton had gone up or down as
much as a half cent a pound we were none
the wiser under twenty-four to forty-eight
hours, while now several of our merchants
get two or three reports every day on the
cotton rmarket right from Liverpool, the
great cotton manufacturing centre of the
world, and reports right from New York as
the market rises and falls every twenty
minutes. Ten years ago it took from two
to three days to get the election returns
from some of the boxes in Salem, while to
day we -re connected by telephone with
all parts of the county, and a splendid ex
change system among the business houses
in town. We can now talk to Alcolu, New
Zion, St Paul, Silver and Panola, and lines
to Foreston and Davis Station are being
built. Commercially speaking our town
is also up-to-date. Dry goods, shoes and
notions are sold here cheaper than they are
on King street in Charleston or Main streti
in Columbia, and we are also selling some
heavy groceries in some of our sister towns
like Sumter, Georgetown and Kingstree.
We have not made any blow about it but
we are coming to the front. We have three
nice churches, next week our graded school
will open, the healthfulness our town is
well known aud the moral atmosphere of
our community wil compare most lavora
blv with any town its size in South Caro
linia. Altogether Manning is a most desira
be place to live, and we stand with open
arms and invite all good citizens to come
and live atmong us.

Seed Cotton License.
There has recently been some investi
gation made into the seed cott'on licenses
for this county and it is charged that a
great injustice is being done those who are
complying with the law, inasmuch as there
are a large nuusber of i'eson buying seed
cotton without having procured the re
quired license. We do not know who all
are buying except as is shown frome the
records, but in order that the public may
know whlo are authorized by law to buy
seed cotton, we publish irom the Clerk of
Court's records the following names:

There is also complaint of the laxity of

His Last "Roasting" Place.
A paper pubiished a long obituary, says
an exchange, of a man who had died in the
community, closing with the statement that
a "long procession of friends followed the
rem sins to the last roasting place." The
family read the note and discovered the
supposed error and asked the editor to
make correction in the word "roasting,"
but he said he could not do it until the
seven years back subscription which de
ceased owed him had been paid.
