Briggs of Sumimerton; it measures fifteen
inches lone, almost as long as some "beats"
that have visited our office before. We are
exceedingly fond of the vegetable beet,

Mrs. John Ried, after an illness of sever

daughter of the John N. Frierson of States
burg. Sumter Item of yesterday.
Mr. Jake Weinberg is at home now from
the South Carolina College where he grad
nated with distinction. It is his intention
to take up the study of law and will, after
a while spent at study in an offlice, take a
thorough course in a law college. Mr.
Weinberg is a student and has the determi
nation to succeed.

District conference of the Methodist
churth convenes in Manning the latter
part of July. Rev. P. 11. Wells chopped
off a chicken's head for yesterday's break
fast, and when the cook went to get it, the
chicken was gone. Guess it must have
mistaken the latter part of June for the lat
ter part of July. Chickens are aversed to
Methodist conferences.
Manning has another artesian well, the
contribution of private parties. This well
is midway of Brooks street and has a steady
flow of about twenty gallons to the minute.
The town council will have the well in
front of the court house bored deeper, and
if they meet with success they should have
a new well bored in front of the academy
property, where good water is necessary.
During summer we are liable to stomach
and bowel troubles, such as diarrhoea,

The election for trustees of the graded
school is going on today and will not close
in time for us to give the result in this
issue. However we feel safe in saying that
the vote will show a confirmation of the ac
tion of the meeting which voted for the spe
cial tax. Tue vote for trustees seems to be
a go-as-you-please race with an indication
that Major A. Levi and Mr. E. L. Wilkins
will be two of the board.
There is one man in Manning so anx
ious for Bryan%; election that we believe if
Bryan should be elected he ought to give
this man the best position in his gift. We
know he would if he appreciated the
prayers by day and by night of this sturdy
old rock of Democracy. This prophet has
predicted the election of Bryan and rain.
He busted on the rain, now let us hope he
will pull even on Bryan.

The girl that has several suitors is fortu
nate indeed, especially when all of the
chaps vie with each other, to see who can
show the most attention. The only trouble
about the matter is the effect upon the
purse; there is such a thing as drying a
well, and a young fellow's purse may at
least be flattened, because it costs money
to buy pretty fronted bosoms and tall col
lars to niake a bewitching Adonis.
We are in receipt of a letter from Mr. C.
W. Pickering who was at one time em
ployed in the Clerk of Court's office and
who, (luring his residence in Manning,
made a favorablo impressior. -pon the peo
ple here. Mr. Pickering left aere to attend
a business college in Macon, Ga , and after
taking a course there, lie procured a posi
tion as a travelng salesman. le is now
in California, enlisted in the United States
army, regulars; his command is now sta
tioned at Presidio of San Francisco.

A game of base ball was played last Sat
urday between the New Zion and Work
man nines, which resulted in the "doing
op" of Workman by ascore of 16 to 11 in
favor of New Zion. There will be another
game played on July 4th between these
nines at a picnic at New Zion. THE TIES
editor acknowledges with thanks an invi
tation to be present, and will be there if
circumstances permit, for he has learned
from experience, for a good time go to Si
lem. The people there won't do a thing to
you, but treat you right.
Last Thursday a game of base ball was
played in Manning between a picked nine
from the country, and one partly made up
from Clinton S. C. but mostly from Man
ning, and it was said to be a fairly good
game; any way, the Manning boys were
very jubilant for having scored a victory
over their country friends. The score was
20 to 12 in favor of Manning; this makes
one game for the country, and one for the
town, the rub game will be playen tomor
row afternoon, and may the best oe win.

In other towns the police are required to
see tbat men without a visible means of
support are put to work either for private
parties or on the chaingang. Why not

Mr. J. E. Norment, the scholarly travel
ing correspondent for the News and Cou
rier spent a part of 31onday and yesterday
morning in .Manning, and while here gave
us a word picture of the recent -woman's
convention." held in the city of Chester.
Mr. Norment seems to have been complete
eaptivated by the manner the proceedings
of the convention were conducted, and his
account of the banquet which followed,
was enough to forever boycott such func
tions had under the auspices of "horrid
man." We are always pleased to meet .1r.
Norment, he is a very entertaining gentle
man and the News and Courier is fortu
nate in having him on its staff.
