duty I owe to my neighbors to tell about
the wonderful cure effected in my case by
the timely use of Chamberlain's colic, chol

permanent cure. I take pleasure in rec

The members of the late Com pany "D,"
Second South Carolina Volnoteers have, by

rades, Joseph F. McLeod and J. F.-at
Stukes. A committea of the compiny
erected one of the stones tolay in the Man
ning cemetery and one at Jordan where
their comrades are sleeping. It would be
a nice compliment to the young dead

fingers ianto the jeans of the country jays.

ily tongued gentry who have migrated to

Capt. W1. C. Davis, after a few days' rest
from service in the army, has settled down
to business and opened up a law office on
Keitt street, back of the court house, in the
ofice form*-rly occupied for a number of
years by the late B. Pressley Barron, Esq.
Cptain~ Lavis has had time opportunities
to make a good lawyer. He is a graduate
of the South Carolina Militatry Academy
an-d the Virginia Law School; both insti
tutions have the reputation of thorough
ness; besidles he has receivedl a practical
kno.~vledge of the law by his association
with Hon. Joseph F. Rhbame. Captain
Davis is now ready to give his attention to
all matters entrusted to him.
There is a disposition to start up the
gradedl school project, and if pushe-l we
believe Manning will be able to secure such
an institution this year. 'T'here is only this
montr to work in, and whatever is to be
done must be done at once; there is no
time for delay. W~e have been informed
that the school property to be sold next
salesday will be bought in by a gentleman
who will donate the property to the graded
school. 'Ibhis is no idle talk; if the people
o this school district want a graded echool
and will go to work at once to secure it, a
party stands reatdy and willing to save the
taxpayers the cost of buying a building.
We are not at liberty to say why this lib
eral offer is made-, but we can say that a
motive of affection is behind the proposi
tion.
The ancients believed that rheumatism
was the work of a demon within a man.
.nv one who has had an attack of sciatic
or ~iniammatory rheumatism will agree
that the infliction is demoniac enough to
warrant the be-lief. It has never been
claimed that Chamnberlain's Pain Balm
would cast out demons, but it will cure
rheumatism, and hundreds bcar testimony
to the truth of this statement. One appli
cation relieves the pain uud this quick re
lief wIch it affords is alone worth many
times its cost. For sale by R~. B. Loryea,
dlruggst.

We are not in business for pleasure only; we want a reasonable profit
on our goods. We don't propose baiting our people; we want to deal
honestly, and thereby keep your trade. If we offer cloth at 5c per yd., we
will sell a bolt, or a bale, or all we have at that figure; because you may
rest satisfied that we are not selling below cost. We have a credit to main
tain, and do not propose selling goods below cost and then fail at 50 cents
on the dollar.
If we advertise goods at 5 cents we will sell at that price all you want,
and not try o sell you something else, or sell you only a few yards of it, and
then try bmake up on something else. If we get bargains we give our
customers the benefit of our bargain prices, but we are not so desperate yet
as to offer gold dollars for 89 cents. Our customers may always depend
upon unifom treatment. We are home here, we were raised here, our
friends are here, and we expect to retain their respect and confidence and
friendship. No man can sell goods below cost, and treat his creditors and
customers right; there must be some deception somewhere. A word to the
wise is suffcient.
Cheap Dry Goods.
No lady or gentleman can coolly and calmly examine our immense stock
of Dry Goods, Notions and fine Millinery without being fully convinced
that we are offering the Cheapest allround line of Dry Goods in this town,
as we bought them last December when dry goods had reached the lowest
point in years. Just think of it, beautiful Spring Print Calicos in fast col
ors, only 3te per yard. Yard-wide Percale in fast colors, at 6te per yard,
that is sold in maniy places at 10c per yard. Beautiful line Piques in White

article that everybody is posted on Sheeting Homespun, two and one
half yards wide, only 12jc per yard; sold everywhere at 20c per yard. You

Our line of Gent's and Children's Straw Hats and Gent's and Ladies'
Parasols and Umbrellas is one of the most complete ever shown in this

A Word to the Ladies.
Ladies, we know when you buy a Hat or Bonnet you want to have the
satisfaction of knowing that it represents the latest styles that the market
can produce, and to this end we devote no little energy and time in making
our Millinery Department one of the most up-to-date concerns in this part
of the country. We buv our Hats from THE LARGEST and most respon
sible concerns on this continent, therefore, we know we get'correct styles.
Our Hats are trimmed by an expert Milliner, a lady of taste and ex
perience. Our Miss Coppedge comes to us with credentials with an
experience of eight years in the business, and that experience gained in the
largest cities of this country.
We keep a large line of Stylish Millinery, and we have a stylish and
tasty Trimmer to trim our Hats.
Hoping that the ladies will appreciate our efforts in giving to them a
First-Class Millinery and Dry Goods Establishment, I am,
Your obedient servant,

IT SEEMS
As if some of our competitors are puzzled to know how it is that we
can sell our goods so cheap. They seem to think that we are selling our
goods at cost. There is nothing like knowing where to buy goods and how
to buy them. The time is past when a man can use all kinds of "booby"
talk to sell goods. What the people want nowadays is a man to deal not in
talking and running down others and patting all kinds of small tricks to
get the trade, but they want goods at the lowest possible price, and tLe
RACKET STORE
is the place to get them. Our trade is increasing daily, and you know we
must be selling goods cheap, and we certainly do appreciate the liberal
patronage of the people of Clarendon County.
Our Millinery
Is more than double that of last season. The people are now beginning to
see how high they have been paying for this line of goods. We sell our
goods out at from 5 to 25 per cent. profit and we replenish every week.
Old-time methods will suit old-time people, but in this day of enter
prise and progress to keep up with the procession you must GET OUT OF
THE RUT and employ modern methods; you must underbuy your compet
itor before you can undersell him, and that is what we are loing daily.
We rush out our goods and do not put them away in some hole or shelf
and hold them for from 50 150 per cent. profit.
We cannot boast of being a Clarendon man and being home here, but
we do boast of selling goods cheaper and giving you better values than any
Clarendon, Sumter, Williamsburg or any other man from any county in
this or any other State in the Union. We are in a position to do so.
The time has come when you must look out for yourself ; your friends
are not going to give you anything or make a living for you, though I
think we have some very good friends here in this town and county.
Should we ever leave this town or State we will forever have a New
York Racket Store with eleven million dollars worth of goods in New York
to select from.
We Will Not be Undersold by Any MaR.
