Governor Ellerbe's condition was not ima proved by his stay at Summerville, and he was taken back to Columbia today. Everybody likes good perfumery. Sumter will be a beneficiav of the re cent railroad deal by which the Southern conics in competition with the Atlantic Coast Line. If the owners of the Southern could be indaced to extend the Sumter and Wateree road to Manning we will also be be-.efited by the advantage of competitive lines. Hon. Joseph F. Rhame returned home this morning from Summerville. where he went to intercede with Governor Ellerbe for a commutation of the sentence of Scip io Rhame,who is in jail bere and condemn ed to be hanged next Friday. The govern or declined to interfere with the court's sentence, and Scipio Rhame will die on the gallows next Friday. I consider it not only a pleasure but a duty I owe to my neighbors to tell about the wonderful cure effected in my case by the timely use of Chamberlain's colic, chol era and diarrhoea remedy I was taken very badly with and procured a bottle of this remedy. McLeod and J. F.-at Stukes. A committea of the compiny erected one of the stones tolay in the Man ning cemetery and one at Jordan where their comrades are sleeping. It would be a nice compliment to the young dead braves if some kindly hand will decorate their graves on next Wednesday-Decora ton day. 'The News and Courier has given a warn ing to the Reubens when they go to the city for the Reunion. The fakirs from everywhere have flocked to Charleston in droves and they expect to get their nimble fingers ianto the jeans of the country jays. When you get down there next week do not be too curious to see everything that is going on, nor do you want to listen to the ily tongued gentry who have migrated to the Reunion for the purpose of relieving the rural yaps of' their jollification change. Beware of pickpockets and swindlers is what should be in the mind of every man who attends tho Reunion next w eek. You cannot accomplish any woric or bus iness unless you feel well. Davis, after a few days' rest from service in the army, has settled down to business and opened up a law office on Keitt street, back of the court house, in the ofice form*-rly occupied for a number of years by the late B. Pressley Barron, Esq. Cptain~ Lavis has had time opportunities to make a good lawyer. He is a graduate of the South Carolina Militatry Academy an-d the Virginia Law School; both insti tutions have the reputation of thorough ness; besidles he has receivedl a practical kno.~vledge of the law by his association with Hon. Joseph F. Rhbame. Captain Davis is now ready to give his attention to all matters entrusted to him. There is a disposition to start up the gradedl school project, and if pushe-l we believe Manning will be able to secure such an institution this year. 'T'here is only this montr to work in, and whatever is to be done must be done at once; there is no time for delay. W~e have been informed that the school property to be sold next salesday will be bought in by a gentleman who will donate the property to the graded school. 'Ibhis is no idle talk; if the people o this school district want a graded echool and will go to work at once to secure it, a party stands reatdy and willing to save the taxpayers the cost of buying a building. We are not at liberty to say why this lib eral offer is made-, but we can say that a motive of affection is behind the proposi tion.
