The taxes have been extended to Febru ary in order to give the few who are behind an opportunity to paty without penalty. As far as this county is concerned the exten sion will not benefit many. The treasurer has collected within two thousand dollars of the whole amont to be collected, which is a very clos.e collection, and we doubt if he will be able to collect much more than one-fourth still remaining unpaid wittout issing executions. In the House of Representatives last Fri day while a yea andt nay vote was being taken, Mr. Geo. R. Jones of this county arose and announced that he changed his vote from "nay to yea," whereupon Speaker Gary announced that "Mr. .Jones changes his name, oh, ah! I mean his vote." This slip on the part of the Speaker created con siderable laughter. We know that Mr. Jones had no idea of having his name changed at this session of the Legislature. even if his wife does not accompany him. Major Green. colored, who - was arrested in Manning not long ago, charged with be ing a party to the murder of .\lr. H. H. Paulinuag at Fort Motte on the night of De cember 17th, last, was tried in Orangeburg last Friday and found guilty. Green was one of the five tried on the same charge,and three were acquitted. Taylor. who was ar rested in Mauning with Green. is amongt the three acanitted. Major Green and Warby Wine vill pay the death penalty for a cowardly murder. Wine confessed his crime and the finding of the dead wan's watch in Green's trunk in Manning is what wound the evidence of guilt around his neck. Mr. T. Z. The first week of the Legislature has gone and as was expected very little of gen eral importance was accomplished. The lower house has been flooded with bills and these were assigned to the proper commit tees. The bill to extend the collection of taxes to February 28th passed with an amendment to return penalties collected. A bill to permit the civil court to open in this county immediately after the criminal court finishes its work has received a favor able report and is now before the Senate with a strong probability of. passing. A bill to exempt Clarendon from requiring a license to traffic in seed cotton was unfa vorably reported on, but placed upon the calendar. [Since writing the above the bill has been killed.j Clarendon's representatives were at their posts of duty at the opening of the session and stand ready to look after all interests affecting the county with a disposition to help the county rid itself of debt without increasing the taxes. At a delegation meet ing a policy was outlined and if followed as we believe it will be, there will be no friction and all four representatives will pull together for the county's welfare. In the matter of appointments the delegation have a number of petitions for magistrates and county commissioners, but these will not receive attention until after the Gover nor is inauguarated, when the delegation will go over all the papers and make rec ommendations. I The general scope of legislation will be found on another page and we hope our readers will follow the proceedings closely, and if at any time any suggestions to the representatives are desired we can speak for the whole delegation when we say that suggestions from home are invited and will receive due consideration. The writer will endeavor to send an in teresting letter to TiE TitEs every week and we hope when this session ends the people will be able to say they are not dis appointed in tne Clarendon delegation. We reel it our duty right here at the be ginning of this new year to thank our friends or Clarendon and the adjoining counties for their liberal patronage during the past year. The times were very heard, indeed, an'd money was scarce, but with all that we did very near twice the business this last year than the year preceding it. Competition was very sharp at times, but we have always tried to give you the best goods at the lowest prices the markets ecould afford. Our millinery department was quite a success. We did not care very much to go into it at first, but being encouraged by some of our lady friends, we went into it and we had several ladies to tell us our $2 hats were much nicer than some at other places in town ror $3 and $3.50. Some of our competitors may try to con vince you to trade with them and not us. They have told you different things about us. They have been telling you falsehoods and will tell you anything, regsrdless of priciple, just to keep you from trading with us. WVhy, just today a young man came in our store and said he had been in another store in town looking at some shoes and he told the man he wanted to come to the Racket Store to trade, or for the shoes anyway, and the young man told him if he cime to the Racket for shoes, just as soon as he walked out on the street the bottoms would fall out, as that was the kind of shoes ,'e sold, and "bless your soul," he sold himu the very same shoe for $1.12 that we sold for $1 (oil tan creoles). I wonder. i the bottoms would fall out of his. That's the way they do. Pity the poor merchant that can't sell you anything with out continually talking about some other man's goods; he will bear watching, When you buy anything fromw us, if it does not prove to be as re.presented, we will retund your money. The correspondent of The News and Courier has this to say ef Senator Appelt's effort to exempt Clareridon County fron the operations of the seed cotton licence law: *Senator Appelt made an earnest pt a for his bill. He said that the people of his coun-ty desired to traffic in seed cotton without being required to procure a i cense, and that the question hid been made an issue in the last carupaig., He said the law was not observed, was not enforced, and could not be entorced; that Williamsburg County was exempt from the license, and that that injured Clarendon County, which adjoined Williamsburg. Spear of Fores ton Ciicuit, at the home of the bride's mother, H. S. Way of Panola, S. C., to Juniata, daughter of the late Col. W. A. Cannon of Florence, S. C., and Mrs. W. H. Cannon, now of Wilson's Mills, S. C. Mr. and Mrs. Way left for their home at Panola the following morn ing, carrying with them the kind wishes of their many friends in this section, where the gentle bride has the love of all who know her. Mr. Iverson Mims of Silver visited friends here yesterday; also the andsome and gallant Willie and obert Briggs put in an appearance. Misses Lula Rivers and Leila Ged dings have been visiting their friend, iss Elma Geddings. We were very uch pleased to have them call on s in school last Tuesday. The Misses Bell of Manning have been on a visit to their sister here. We regret to chronicle the serious lness of Miss Addie Parsons at the ome of her brother-in-law, Mr. John lhames. Mrs. C. P. McKnight, who has been eeping house for her brother, Mr. . L. Cattino, for the past year, has oved to her country home, two miles away. Mr. T. P. Cuttino of Manning spent a few days in our town last week. The many friends of Miss Eva~ Cur tis will be pleased to know that she will entertain them in the near fu ture by givineg an excellent birthday fete. Her announcement will appear next week. Pretty little Mamnie aiid Hattie Briggs of Silver spent Thursdeyv here at the home of their teacher. Through young, they are possessed of remark able musical talent and are quite in teresting and entertaining. Guess what young lady resolved a resolution, vowed a vowv and swore off last Sunday night. One young man says Summerton is the garden spot of the world and he is not possessed with a "yf" ei ther. WVhat think ye? We are a little envious of Mr. R. J. Bradham for the valuable present e received a few days ago-a nice horse and buggy-the donor being his generous and venerable father, Sheriff D. J. Bradham. We are glad to welcome Mr. T. M. ouzon among us as salesman in the store of Mr. D. M. Bradham. We have been reliably informed that the Atlantic Coast Line will ere long be extended from Sumter to amden, a distance of thirty miles, vhich means much better accommo dation on the Wilson and Summer ton branch. Certainly this is a step in the right direction. Much has been said about the pet rified man which has been exhibited lmost everywhere and profited his owner, Mr. Buff of Lexington county, onsiderable pocket change, now ap pears in Germany and proves to be a ake, made of "lime and clay salici tate." Suppose Mr. Buff was his reator, he came very near making him from the same material that all other human beings were made of cla-but we are not sure about the ime and salicitate. However, they got the money. Next week we hope to guess who will be the next couple to be mar ried.
