It is with great pleasure that we ac knowledge the receipt of newspapers from Manila, Philippine Islands, and we feel under obligations to the sender, Mr. W. T. Wilder, for the thoughtful courtesy. Our readers will remember Mr. Wilder, who for a number of years was a salesman in the store of Mr. M. Levi. Wilder went from here to Texas and enlisted in the United States Army. His gentlemanly conduct attracted the notice of the commanding of ficer, and he was given a position which lightened the hardship of a soldiers life and gave him more pay. When the Span ish-American war broke out Wilder's regi ment was one which was ordered to Hono lula, and from their to Manila to aid Dew ey in holding the captured city. We hope Mr. Wilder will send us a letter for TBE TuES. It is folly for people to subject themselves to attacks of chills and fever and malarial troubles, when by the timely use of Ra mon's Liver Pills & Tonic Pellets and Ra mon's Pepsin Chill Tonic they can so for tify their systems as to entirely prevent them. Every one knows these famous remedies, but for fuller information ask your druggist for pamphlets and sample dcse. For sale by Dr. W. M. Brockinton, Manning, S. C. There is talk of the merchants of the county, holding a meeting in the near fu ture to memorialize the legislature to adopt some law which will give some relief to the party furnishing supplies for tenants. They say that unless something is done it will be impossible for a merchant to make ad vances, and the burden will be heavy upon the poor man who is forced to rent land. If the merchants decline to make advances next year, the lan d-owner will be necessari ly forced to advance for his tenants or re lease his rent claim in order that the ten ant may get food to make his crop. If the land-owner is unable to make advances to his tenants and is compelled to go in debt to do so, it would be far better for him to make some amicable arrangment with the merchant, and thus save himself from going in debt. Just as sure as fate if the owner of land undertakes to supply his tenants by going in debt, he will have to give a mortgage of his land to secure the man who credits him, for what business man, will sell his goods on credit without substantial security to a man who in turn sells them to somebody else on credit. The experience of the past should be a lesson for the future, with regard to giving mort gages; the man who mortgages his land, may be successful in his business ventures and some day shake off the yoke, but in at lest fifty per cent of the cases the mort gaged property is struck down under the Sheriffs hammer. We therefore advise our landov-ning readers to not be stubborn about this matter, and to go to work at once making such concessions to the tenants that business men will be able to carry them through next year, which to our mind will be the hardest we have had in many years. Pains in the chest when a person has a cold indicate a tendency toward pneumo nia. A piece of flannel dampened with Chamberlain's Pain Balm and bound on to the chest over the seat of pain will promptly relieve the pain and prevent the threatened attack of pneumonia, This same treat ment will cure a lame back in a few hours. Sold by R. B. Loryea, druggist. The County Commissioners met last ionday and in compliance witb their in itation the legislative delegation were present with the exception of Hon. Henry B. Richardson, who was prevented from attending by extreme illness in his family. He sent a letter regreting his inability to be present, and in it he expressed an anx ious desire to co-operate with the delegation ad commissioners to aid in bringing about such legislation as will inure to the best in terests of the taxpayers. The commission ers naade it plain to the delegation that it was a business necessity to put the county pona cash basis and the only way it can be done, is to borow the necessary funds from the State Sinking fund commission ad pay cash for work and county supplies. t was demonstrated that with a casia sys tem there could be a saving of at least 25 per cent, for the reason that parties work ing for the county under present condi tions, charge more for the work in order to meet the discounts required by men who speculate in county papers. The levy for county purposes for the present year was mills and j} of a mill for back indebted ness, and from the exhibits made to the delegation it was shown that the levy, will not meet the demands and a deficit is the result which must go into past indebted ness. With such a condition to confront, it matters not how anxious the representa tives are to reduce the levy au.~ thereby cut down taxes, it will be an exceedingly diffi cult job. However the deleuation are dis posed to investigate and if possible they will make a cut; at their request the clerk of the board is to furnish each representa tive with a complete written statement of tne county's finances so a study of the sub ject can be made before the meeting of the eneral Assembly. Plow den and his family were at supper in their home in the fork, a scoundrel entered the other end of the house through a window and stole a trunk, the contents of which was clothing belonging to Mrs. Plowden and the children, there was also a mite box containing 96 cents belonging to one of the little ones. A few minutes after the robbery Mrs. Plowden sent her daughter into the room for soni purpose, and it was not until then that they knew of what had happened. A hand on the place came up in a little while and when he learned of what had taken place he said that he heard someone running off with something that rattled. and he hailed them to stop, but they ran on the faster. On Safturday Mr. Plowden came to Man ning and secured a search warrant, and while he, with his help were out hunting for the thieves and the property, they re ceived information of a conspiracy to set fire to Mr. W. P. Emanuel's ginnery, rob his house, and if it was necessary to effect their purpose, kill 'ar. Emanuel. When this information reached them they tem porarily abandoned the search wartant and went after August Barno and Fred Ham met whom it is alleged endeavored to per suade other parties to join them in their damnable crime. When H [mmets house was reached some ore came to the door and undertook to engage them in conversa tion, and while this was going on Hammet undertook to make his escape from another side. He was ordered by Mr. Plowden to stop, but his anxiety to get away affected his hearing and on he went until he was shot in the legs. Both of the negroes were brought on to jail Sunday and it is thought they are the ones that stole the trunk from Mr. Plowden's home. Yesterday the trunk was found in a cotton patch with a part of the contents lying on the ground. Mr. Plowden told us that he does not think anything is missing, but not until his wife reached home would he be able to say defi nitely. The prisoners in jail are to be tried for conspiracy and if they are guilty we hope they will never set foot on free soil again. Bucklen's Aruica Salve. Two Pointed Questions Answered. What is the use of making a bettor article than your competitor if you can not get a etter price for it? Ans.-As there is no difference in the price the public will buy only the better, so that while our profits may be smaller on a single sale they will be much greater in the aggregate. How can you get the public to know your ae is the best? If both articles are brought prominently efore the public both are certain to be tried and the public will very quickly pass judg ent on them and use only the better one. This explains the large sale on Chamber ain's Cough Remedy. The people have been using it for years and have found that it can always be depended upon. They ay occasionally take up with some fash ionable novelty put forth with exaggerated claims, but are certain to return to the one emedy that they knov to be reliable, and for coughs, colds and croup there is noth ing equal to Chamberlain's Cough Remedy.
