Died last Monday in the city of Chester,
S. C., at Devaga's Infirmary, Mrs. Bessie
Snyder, wife of Rev. W. J. Snyder. The
deceased was the daughter of Mr. T. Mor
gan Davis of the Jordan section, and was
about 19 years of age. She leaves an in
fant. The funeral took place to-day at Jor
dan.

A great fight is on against heat at Brook

We ask all of our readers to read Colonel
Larry Gantt's indignant refutation on page
4 of Candidate Archer's charges at Man
ning, and it will give them an idea how
tricky politicians of the Archer-Watson
type are endeavoring to besmirch the char
acter of Governor Ellerbe whose official
acts they dare not assail and whose private
character is spotless comparect with theirs.

Supervisor Owens bus, for the last three
weeks, been in Douglass township, where
he has built a bridge .330 feet longan
threw up a good causeway. This work was
done with the chaingung of ten hands.
They hewed out all the timber except the
flooring, and under the old system the
bridge would have cost the county $330 for
work alone, the county furnishing the tim
ber.

Mr. C. W. Pickering, the young man
who has been employed in the Clerk of
Court's office, has severed his connection
with that ottice and gone to OrangburgJ
county. Mr. Pickering is a worthy young
gentleman and he made a number of
friends in Manning by his gentlemanly de
portmaent. We voice the sentiment of his
acquaintances in wishing him success
wherever he goes.

So satisfied are prospective candidates
that Sher12 Bradham will be elected Secre
tary of State that already probable success
ors are being spoken of by their respective
friends. The names we have heard men
tioned so far in this connection are Messrs.'
J. Harry Lesesne, A. -1. Richbourg, E. D.
Hlodge 'and E. B. Gamble, and while we
have not received it from either of these'
gentlemen, we believe that in all probabil
ity all of them will be aspirants for the
Farmers' Institute.
The Farmers' Institute held here last
Saturday was not as well attended as we
had hoped it would be, but this is account
ed for by the large attendance at the cam
paign meeting the Wednesday before. The
number attending, however, were much
pleased with the addresses or rather lec
tures of the gentlemen from Clemson Col
lege. Professors Furman, DuPre, Poats
and Connor each gave their hearers very
valuable information in their respective
lines. Hon. James E. Tindal, one of the
trustees of Clemson, is heartily interested
in the institution and it was mainly
through his efforts that these gentlemen ap
peared before a Clarendon audience.
The mechanical department, represented
by Professor Poats, vas of especial inter
est and the magnificent specimens of wood,
steel and iron work turned out at the col
lege by the students was- alone worth at
tending. In this department a boy can bo
fitted for the practical side of life; his
hands and his head are trained to battle
with leaders of thought and action. One
proof of this is the number of Clemson
boys who have secured lucrative and im
portant positions in the service of the gov
ernment since the beginning of hostilities.
There is no doubt about it that Clemson
is doing a work no other institution in the
State is doing and is being done by very
few in the South, at the same time it is not
duplicating the work of the other colleges
as was made very plain by Professor Fur
man. The only thing done at Clemson
which is a duplication of the Citadel is the
military branch and this was explained as
a requirement of the general government
in order to participate in the federal appro
priations.
Professor Connor's talk on chemistry and
fertilizers was interesting to those who till
the soil and many questions were asked of
him which gave him a better opportunity
to spread out and show more clearly his
branch of the institution.
Professor DuPre should have had a large
udience of housewives, because he is not
nly a pleasing talker, but a gentleman
whose face indicates a latherlv disposition.

and when the next Institute is held there
will be a good attendance of ladies. Al
hough the crowd was small, we believe the

The Lake City Tragedy.
The United States officials have been re
:ently kept busy making arrests in the
Lake City postoffice; tragedy. The latest
rrests were made in Columbia from the
danning Guards. Deputy Marshal Sligh
xent to the camp one day last week and
with warrants demanded C. D. Joyner, E.
K. Rogers, 0. S. Kelly and Marion M.
lark, all of them members of the Man
ing Guards. The demand was made
pon Capt. W. C. Davis, who refused to
urrender his men without orders. The
emand was renewed upon Major Thomp
on, who also refused without orders from
,he war department. Deputy Sligh com
nunicated by wire with the war depart
nient and on Saturday afternoon Major
hompson received the necessary orders

boy, the son of Mr. Willie Clark, who now

These men are arrested upon informa
ion firnished the authorities by two men
who Lhave turned State's evidence. If they
succeed in convicting any of the accused,
:hey will receive as a reward $1,500 for each
onviction.
The N. Y. Racket is going to move in
togust and is giving big bargains in the
nonth of July.

assemble at the court house Saturday, July
33, 1898, at 11 o'clock a. m. to provide rules
o govern the primary,to appoint managers
o conduct the election and to attend to
any other business which may come be
fore the committee. This is a very import
at meeting and every member should be
present and each member should come pre
pared to suggest three names to act as man
gers. Those clubs which failed to elect
their executive committeemen before the
onvention and have done so since will alsot
e expected to have a representative at the
neeting on the 23rd inst.
