He rejoined the campaigners yesterday at Beaufort The United States authorities have ar rested J. P. Newham unon the charge of being implicated in :he~Lake City killing of Postmaster Baker, and it is said that he has made a full confession, implicating a number of Williamsburg citizens. If New ham is one of the gang and he does "peach," there will be weeping and wailing down in that section, for Uncle Sam will handle the culprits most mercilessly as he should do if he catches the guilty ones, but in our opinion the evidence of a "peach" .will be taken with many grains of 'ialt, es pecially where there are large rewards which might induce him to testify. I was seriously afflicted with a eangh for several years, and last fall had a more se veere co-igh than ever before. The County Democratic Executive Com mittee met in the court house this 18th day of June, with Capt. D. J. Bradham in the chair. The roll of delegates was called and a quorum being present the chairman stated the call. On motion it was unanimously agreed to have the State candidates welcomed in our county on campaign day, which is June 29th, and a reception committee consisting of five was selected to receive the candi dates on their arrival; also that the mem bers of the executive committee be a recep tion committee at 10 o'clock on the stand with appropriate badges. On motion it was agreed to have six places of meeting in the county for county campaign candidates and also Congres sional candidstes, which places are as fol lows: Pinewood-August 22. Packsville-August 23. Summerton-August 24. Manning-August 25. Foreton-Angust 26. Bo3ikin's Mill-August 27. On motion it was agreed that all candi dates for county offices file their pledges and pay their fees by noon Saturday, Au gust 20th. It was agreed that the folloming assessment be charged each canctidate: Congress ....................$50 Senator ...................... 20 Representatives............... 10 Judge of Probate.............. 5 County Supervisor............ 10 Superintendent Education.... 10 Auditor...................... 10 Treasurer... .............. 10 A committee of one was selected consist ing of Major Louis Appelt to arrange with the County Supervisor for ballot boxes to be used in the primary election. Capt. D. J. Bradham in eloquent words thanked the people and the executive com mittee for the many honorable positions conferred on him, and in feeling words, alluded to the courtesies bestowed upon him by the executive committee, and said he wished to resign his position as county chairman, and while the committee regretted to part with its faithful and good counselor, it complied with his wishes. Mr. J. Elbert Davis was elected to fill the vacant chair of our friend D. J. Bradham as chairman of the County Democratic Ex ecutive Committee. It was agreed to hold the State campaign meeting tor this county in the court house and it is to be hoped that all of our citizens will be at this meeting on the 29th and give each candidate a warm and hearty wel come to our county. By order of the Executive Committee. A. J. Ricusoiao, Sec'y. June 18, 1898. A Clever Trick. It certainly looks like it, but there is really no trick about it. Anybody can try it who has lame back and weak kidneys, malaria or nervous troubles. We mean he can cure himself right away by taking Elec tric Bitters. This medicine tones up the whole system, acts as a stimulant to the liver and kidneys, is a blood purifier and nerve tonic. It cures constipation. head ache, fainting spells, sleeplessness and melancholy. It is purely vegetable, a mild laxative, and restores the system to its nat ural vigor. Try Electric Bitters and be convinced that they are a miracle worker. Every bottle guaranteed. Only 50c a bottle: at R. B3. Loryea's drug store. 3 state Campaign Meeting. The State cdmpaign meeting takes place in Manning next Wednesday and the peo ple will have an opportunity to listen at Governor Ellerbe's account of his steward ship. They will also be able to listen to the rer cons why he should not not have a second term, by his opponents. Colonel George D). Tillman and Colonel R. B. Wat son, Senator Archer and ex-Slictor Schum pert, and last but not least, Mr. Feather stone. All these gentlemen want Governor Ellerbe to drop the gubernatorial bone for, one of them to pick up. Colonel Tillman wants the towns deprived of the dispen sary revenue, and Watson and Archer are pickin'g at the foundation brick of the in stitutions of higher education, Schumpert wants votes and Featherstone wants prohi bition. Then we will have Col. Dan Tompkins, M. Rt. Cooper 'and Capt. D. J. Bradham, who are each asking for the Secretary of State's office, but as only one of them can get it, and as Dan Tompkins has already had it two terms and Mar. Cooper is a mem ber of the State Board ot Control, we think the people will vote for Clarendon's favor ite, Captain Bradham. Without going over the entire list of State candidates, we can assure the people ir they will attend the meeting they will not only have plenty to select from, but they will hear some very lively speeches. We espe cially hope the attendance will be good. for the reason it has been a long time sinee Clarendon has had an opportunity of hon oring one of her sons for a State office an d now the chance is afforded them and every body should be here to give him a good send-off. Next Wednesday is the day and everybody should come. A Letter From Captain Davis. Camp Fitzh-ugh Lee, ( Columbia, 8. C., June 14, 1898. Editor THE TIME~S: Our battalion has received orders to re cruit companies up to maximum war strength, to wit, 106 men. Should any of :y Clarendon friends desire to join Com pany "D." I think they will have the op portunity in a few days. A recruiting officer will be detailed in a few days'to pro eed to Manning, and as fast as he accepts men they will be forwarded to my companyF wherever thie battalion goes. Clarendon is not as well represented as it should be, and while I have as fine a set f men in my company as I ever saw gath ered together. I would be delighted to see more of the home boys at the front. We e're very well satistied with our sur roundings, and I never served under a more competent commanding officer than Major Thompson, and I can assure the young men of Clarendon they shall have my most careful attention. There is much friendly rivalry between the companies composing our battalion, and I am repeatedly told my company is forging to the front in proficiency in drill. The crops will soon be "laid by,"' boys, and you can still fight with your home company. As soon as the recruiting offi er opens up I want to see more of you ome to us. Our uniforms are on the way here and we expect the new guns at an early day. Camp Lee, June 20, 1898.-One day last week Messrs. C. S. Land, J. C. Land, W. '. P. Sprott, C. M. Mason, H. D.Clark and . A. Sprott of Foreston gladdened the hearts of Company "D"~ by sending a big bag of fresh fish. As soon as they arrived t camp I had plenty of volunteers to clean them, and having purchased some meal, we turned the bag over to Chief Cook odge to prepare for supper. This sol ie, with two weeks' experience, has be come a veteran around the pcts, and ex celled himself in the prepartion of thi: feast. Each man got two fish around, ari our guests were loud in their praises of ow - Clarendon friends. Not only was eact man satisfied at supper, but a panful wa! put up for our breakfast, and especially tCi officers went to sleep dreaming of new con anests next morning. But unfortunatehy a big rain came up that night and the guard around the coimisary was taken off, and as a result we bad bacon instead of fish for breakfast. Remembering how we had enjoyed our supper, we didn't havE the heart to even investigate. Major Land, an old veteran, knows how to lighten the cares of the soldier in camp, and we will always remember the chlt and good will created by the thou..;htfal ness of the major and the othe: gentlemen mentioned above. Yours respectfully, W. C. DAVIS, Capt. Co. "D." Bad management keeps more people in poor circumstances than any other one cause. To be successful one must lo.ak ahead and plan ahead so that when a favor able opportunity presents itself he is ready to take advantage of it. A little forethougbt will al. save much expense and valuable time, A.prudent and careful man will keep a bottle Chamberlain's Colic, Cholera arnd Diarrhoea Remedy in the house, the shift less fellow will wait until necessity compels it and then ruin his best horse going for a doctor and have a big doctor bill to pay, besides; one pays out 25 cents, the other is out a hundred dollars and then wonders why his neighbor is getting richer while he is getting poorer For sale by E. 13. Loryea, druggist. From Our Soldier Boys. Camp Lee, Columbia. S. C., J une 19. 1898. 3 Editor THE Tixs: The party guessing nearest the ate when this battalion will leave the State will be giventhe pair of shoes taken off the first Spaniard killed or captured by the Man ning Guards. Every man present in the battalion has been given underclething, hats and shoes. T:ie uniforms and guns are at the depot, so before this time next week we will be ready to move a a moment's notice. The battalion is now complete; the last company has been sworn in and once again Msjor Thompson can rest easy. Recruiting officers will be sent out on Tuesday to get up 26 men to recruit each company up to the required number, 106. Sergeant Epps has been appointed recruit ing officer for the Manning Guards. All those wishing to join us will report to him at Manning on next Friday and Saturday. Transportation will be given every man that passes the preliminary examination to Columbia or wherever the battalion is or dered. Captain Davis is at home on business. Private Baker took a trip home last week to see his best girl; he couldn't think of going to the war and not say good-bye again. We are glad to see Corporal Carroll in camp again. Privates White and Tiller are able to sit up and will be with us the ltter part of this week. Private Disher is on the sick list, but much better today. All others are improv ig. We drill about four hours each day, get ting ourselves in shape to stand force marches, etc., in Cuba. It takes about a 10-mile march at 12 o'clock to get our blood to circulate freely. On last Tuesday Mr. W. T. P. Sprott sent us a bag of fish. Each man ate at least two. To say we enjoyed them would not express 'e: gratitude. We certainly ap preciate his thoughtfulness and thank him for his kind remembrance. A treat like this can only be appreciated by those placed in our circumstances. The ladies of Columbia are going to fur nish supper for the battalion next Tuesday' night. Tour writer had the pleasure of taking supper with M1rs. Calvo and others out here last week, the originators of next Tuesday's feast. I can say now that each one in the battalion will have all that he can eat. So you see we are not forgotten if we do belong to Uncle Sam's chaingang. WVhy don't the folks in Manning and all over the county get up an excursion and come over to see the boys? We would cer tainly be glad to see them and show them all how we, as soldiers, live. Were we in actual service we could give you something more interesting, but news here is as scarce as Spaniards, so will close. Yours truly, M. G. I. B3. S. C. V.
