Married last Thursday evening, by Rev. James McDowell. at the residence of the bride's mother, near Sammy Swamp, Mr. W. Theodore Lesesne and Miss Callie Mc Fadden, a daughter of the la:e Hon. Syd ney McFadden. The groom is one of Ciar- I endon's most progressive young farmers. He is the proprietor of "Live Oak," one of the Lest equipped plantations in this sec tion of the State, a first class business man and lie has a host of friends. The bride is a st-kingly handsome woman and accom pliied. We extend to this well mated couple our sincere congratulations. Loryea, the druggist, has a full line of caraiinitive and soothing syrup. We are glad that steps have been taken to repeal the seed cotton license law. In our judgment the law is wrong in principle, but as long as it is on the statute books we believe in its enforcement. No citizen has a right to violate a law simply because be does not approve of it. The best way to wipe out an obnoxious law is to enforce it strictly. We believe a man should be al lowed to buy and sell whatever he sees tit so long as it does not injure the healtb or morals of the community in which he lives. The intention of the seed cotton act was to put a stop to the little traps which dot the country every fall, that encourages stealing from the fields, but it does not have the desired effect. The amount of the license fee is not sufficient to drive them out, and if it were more, violations would be more numerous. The best thin; that can possi bly be done in the matter is to repeal the license law, and if a man is caught buying seed cotton at night he should be punished severely. Mr. Elisha Berry, of this place, says he never had anything to do him so much good and give such quick relief from rheu matism as Chamberlain's Pain Balm. He was bothered greatly with shooting pains from hip to knee until he used this lini ment, which affords prompt relief.-B. F. Baker. druggist, St. Paris, Ohio. For sale by R. B. Loryea, the druggist. j A very sad occurrence happened last Thursday afternoon near Silver, in which a good white citizen was the victim of an aroused negro's fury. It is very difficult to get the particulars and, after talking with a number of persons we obtained the following statement, given to us as from a negro who was an eye witness. Some days ago a negro by the name of Sep Jones shut up some hogs belonging to Mr. McDonald Gre, bat after considerable persuasion of a neighbor he turned the hogs out Jones wrote Green a letter containing insulting language, and on last Thursday while Mr. Green was out looking after a forest fire he saw Jones in the woods seated upon a log with a gun across his lap. Green ap proached Jones with a pitchfork in his band, and after telling Jones that he had received his letter and that it was imperti nent, Jones rose up and shot Green full in the face and then ran, and is now at large. Mr. (Green will iose his right eye and may lose liis life. FREE OF CHARGE TO SUFFERERd. Regular size 50 cents and $1.00. 1 Manning was visited last Thursday by Mr. r. Allen McQuary, the young man who is going "around the world for an Arkan sas girl and $5,000." Mr. McQuary has a very youthful appearance and his manners indicate gentle breeding. He arrived late in the afternoon, dressed in the costume of an ancient knight, saving the helmet which he was forced to discard on account of in-! jury to his eyes. Very shortly after his ar rival a crowd gathered around him and plied him with many questions, and his answers were polite and unreserved. He had with him two grey hounds, and the horse which he rode seemed very weary. Thursday evening he addressed quite a gathering from the balcony of the court house. His speech was an explanation of is novel exploit, and it also had a consid erable flavor of Coxevisma about it. He al luded to the toiling mnasses and the unequal distribution of wealth and the powerful in fnence money' was exerting. After his talk he sold some pamphlets which told all about himself, his trip, its conditions and his girl and her eccentric parent. BUCKLEN'S ARItCA SALVE. There is considerable uneasiness about the small-pox epidemic, if it may be called such, and the Board of IHealth, believing that "an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure," has called upon the town to use any power that it may have to get the people to vaccinate. The Town Coun cil, at a special meeting. desiring to co-ope rate with the health authorities in all mat ters where the sanitary condition of the comi.nity might be at stake, have adopted a resoiution askingsevery man, woman an d child to be vaccinated, that all possible means be taken to keep the pest from our community. The intendant was authorized to make arrangements with a proper per son to provide vaccination to such persons as are unable to pay for the same. Ar rangements were perfected with Dr. George L. Dickson, and he will vaccinate in cases of charity at the town's expense. In some towns compulsory methods are being adop-I ted by the town authorities, but our coun cil do not care to resort to such violent means, as they are satisfied that for the public good, the citizens will be alive to the situation and render assistance to the mu nicipal authorities to keep this Small pox pest out of our gates. Assessors and taxpayers will enter the first given name of the taxpayer in full, also make a separate return for each party for the township the property is in, and where the tax payers owns realty, to insert the postoffice as their place of residence, and those who only own personal property, to give the party's name who owns the land they live on as their residenee, which aids the tax payer as well as the county treasurer in making the collections and pre venting errors. Every male citizen between the ages of twedty-or.e and sixty years on the first day of January, 1898, ex cept those incapable of earning a support from being maimed, or from other causes, shall be deemed tax-. able polls. This does not, apply to Confederate soldiers over fifty years of age. All the returns that are made after the twentieth day of February will have a penalty of 50 per cent. added thereto, unless out of the county du ring the time of listing. Not know ing the titie of listing is no excuse. The assessing and collecting of taxes is all done now in the same year, and we have to aggregate the number and value of all the horses, cattle, mules, etc., and their value that there is in the county, and have same on file in the Comptroller Gen eral's office by the thirtieth day of June each year. And from that time to the first day of October each year the auditor's and treasurer's duplicate has to be completed and an abstract of tne work in the Comp troller's office by that time, which will show at a glance that the audi og has no time to take in returns r do anything else much, between he first day of March and the first ay of October each year but work n the books and blanks. Therefore [ hope that all taxpayers will do me he favor of making their returns in time, J. ELBER T DAVIS, Auditor Clarendon County.
