RUSE OF BOLD ROBBERS.
Men Almost Murder a Merchant and Then
Take His Money.
SPARTANBURG, S. C.. Nov. 6.-Just
after dark one of the boldest robberies
ever known in this section occurred at
Welford, 10 miles from this place. A
man came to the home of Albert Bal
lenger, a prosperous merchant and
farmer, and asked Mr. Ballenger to go
to the store, as he wished to buy some
" goods.
Mr. Ballenger was eating supper, and
after finishing went with him. The
man bought a bill and gav- ''-e mer
chant a $20 note. Mr. BalL. :. r went
to his safe for the change, and while he
was securix g the money, having the safe
open, he was dealt a blow on the head,
which crushed his skull.
Another man who was present then
joined the robber. They looted the
safe, locked the door and walked out.
It was several hours before the robbery
was discovered.
Mr. Ballenger is still unconscious.
The two men escaped. Bloodhonds
have been sent for.
BiG MEETING OF BLACKS.
Nepublicans Hold a Convention at Raleigh
and Adopt Resolutions.
R ALE-GH, NQv. 6.-A mass conven
tion of North Carolina negroes, held
here, adopted the name of the Lincoln
Republican league. It indorsed the ao
tion of the penitentiary directors in re
fusing to follow Governor R~ussell's ad

The convention was called in protest
against the giving of all offices. save
ten, to the 30,000 white Republicans,
and it is said this insulted the 120,000
negro voters.
Resolutions were adopted calling on
all negro Republicans hereafter to vote
for no man opposed to giving the negro
full recognition; that in inture before
any man is nominated negroes should
exact a written pledge that he will give
half of his clerical force to the negro
Republicans; that all nominees shall
give a pledge in favor of negro educa
tion, and that negroes who are
willing to trade their race off for office
shall not be nominated.
