Unpleasant Remedy.
A writer on lion hunting tells how
Hassan, a quick witted Somali. fcund
his way out of a veryv serious difficulty.
He had been down in the wvater:'.ss
plains and wvas on the way home, driv
ing some camels before him. It was a
very dry year, and, although this was
the rainy season, he had b'en unable to
find any water to give his pony.
The result was that, having be-n rid
den hard for two or three days, with lit
tle or no water to drink, the pony suc
cumbed entirely and at last lay down
about 20 miles from the wells. No
amount of persuasion, or even beat ing,.
would get the creature on its legs again.
Hassan w~as in despair. He knew that
there were no vessels at the wei ls ini
which he might carry water back to
the pony, and it seemed to himn as if
nothing could be do::e to save it.- At
last be thought of a plan:. Hi- dro;-e the
camels at top speed to the v: .t , gav
the:ni as mucoh wvater as thry ec ttl

He found the pony wvao rc 1:e hI -f

diately killed the cant i5, cut to m op"o
and took the water fr' :n th ir sen'--ch.
The ponly was eager cnouga to drin Jit,
and after the draft it revived sufli
ciently to struggle on to the we ls
In a few days it had c:npletely re
covered. In telling the story Hassan
always added that he could get nlenty
of camels, and whether that were so er
not he would rather have cult the
