Davis has been appointed clerk of court to fill out the unex pired term made vacant by the death of his father. Married last Thursday at the resi dence of Mr. J. M. Brogden, near Brogdens, Mr. W. S. Reams and Miss Mary Brogden. Mr. H. Harby, of Sumter, seems to be making things hum around him. Two car loads of stock has just ar rived and trade, seems to be good with him. An alarm of fire last Saturday night created considerable excite ment. The fire was a tenant house belonging to a colored woman by the name of Amy Johnson. The State fair promises to be the biggest ever yet held, and the man agement are 'doing everything in their power to give the people as many attractions as possible. Comptroller General James Norton was in town yesterday, making his annual settlement with the county offieers who have the financial man agement of the county in hand. The storm of last week so damaged the Methodist church at this place that the congregation have .to wor ship elsewhere until a new edifice can be erected, which we understand will not be long. . The council has allowed a few more days to our citizens for the making of town-tax returns. We hope they will take advantage of this and thus save themselves the penalty which will be surely attached. The -residence of Magistrate Ezra -P. Geddings, of Pinewood, was de stroyed by fire last Thursday, about noon. The origin of the fire is sup - osed to have been causer1 by a de -fective store flue. Several new houses are being built in the Southern portion of the town. The storm of last week did fearful destruction to lire and property in Florida. Died at his home, near Pinewood, Thursday 27th inst., Mr. J. N. Con nors, aged about fifty-six years. We have good reason to believe that orange blossoms will bloom in Manning some time this month. The colored Odd Fellows of this place will give a festival next Wednesday and Thursday nights to raise money towards paying for their hall. One of our prominent citizens sat down to his fifty-fifth birth-day dinner last Monday, and to his surprise he found a pig's foot, which show his folks to be up to date. Johnson. of Marion, at one time a citizen of this place, was the victim of a gang of insurance sharpers. A company was organized and Mr. Johnson was made president. They did business under the name of "Citizens' Fire Insurance Company. The concern obtained a charter and went to work swindling wherever they could catch a victim. E. L. Winant, the secretary and treasurer, whose headquarters were in Colum bia, found out that the game was discovered, and he undertook to skip. He got as far as Charleston when he was arrested.
