Captain Thomas Wilson, President of the Wilson & Summerton Railroad, was in Manning last Saturday. The tobacco warehouse at this place is fast gaining ground among the growers of the yellow leaf. When you come to court do not forget to give the editor a call and get a receipt for a renewed subscrip tion. The court of general sessions opens in Manning on Monday, October 19th. Judge Benet will be the presiding - judge. Mr. A. C. Davis is in charge of the clerk of court's office until a successor to the late clerk is appointed and is *qualified. Died last Wednesday night, at Jor dan, Mrs. Snyder, wife of -Rev. W. J.- Snyder, pastor of the Jordan Methodist church. Hon. E. RI. Plowden, has gone to Danville, Va., to look after the to bacco shipments of the Brewington Tobacco Growers Association. The merchants of this- town must have an abiding faith in holding cot ton for better prices, as some of their lots are full of the fleecy staple. Without a doubt the cotton crop is short, and the only reasoning we can give for the depressed condition of the market is the present political conditions. He keeps a full line of every I - thing and is doing a good busineso, because the people are pleased with his goods and his prices. Mrs. Riff has charge of the millnery depart ment and she keeps up with all the lastest fashions. A lady can buy a hat from her that is trimmed accord ing to the rules of the most expert milliners. Be sure and go there for bargains. Thonas & Bradham are going to Int every farmer in the connty in a p-ition to buy a wagon and a buggy. They have jnst received a car load of both. Who is it that is _fond of a nice fitting suit of clothes' Read D. J. Chandler's advertisement and when you go to Sumter he will show you that what he says in this paper he will say over his counters. D. J. Chandler has a large patronage in Clarendon and he appreciates it as is seen by the way he advertises for the trade. You can be fitted out by him at a very small cost and be sure to call on him. Manning was visited by a storm yesterday which at times became alarming and the oldest inhabitant says that he does not remember see ing such a thing in this town before. The wind started about half past two o'clock, and did not lull until about four. Trees and fences were thro n down and snapped off like pipe-stems, and the tin roofing on several houses was taken off and car ried away from the buildings. The streets of this town is fairly covered with broken trees and limbs, and wherever the eye is cast can be seen the destruction of yesterday's storm. The prize honee of the Clarendon Tobacco Warehouse & Supply Co. was overturn d e ad crushed like an egg s'aell. The -,)of of the post office building was ma.de naked by the loss of its tin. J. W. McLeod's store had its tin blown oif the zoof and several large panes of gl.ss blow7n out of the front. The dan age done to Mr. W. Scott Harvin was very heavy. He had about 200,000 feet of lumber go ing thror -h a drying process and this became damaged by the rain. The smoke stack to his engine and several of his sheds were blown down. Alfred Dyson met with some con siderable damage at his mill. In the tobacco prize house there was about 15000 pounds of tobacco which will be damaged more or less. It is said the entire loss to the Ware house Company will reach about $1,500 and that Mr. Harvin's loss will be in the neighborhood of k1000. Mr. W. H. Bellinger, the general travel ing salesman for F. W. Wagner & Co., Charleston, met with a very narrow escape from being killed or seriously injured. He was riding along the road in one of Legg & Hutchinson's vehicles when the blow overtook him: a tree near by*cracked, which firght ented the horses and they jumped; just then the tree fell and its limbs struck the vehicle and knocked one of the occupants out on the ground. Cubans of the lower and middle 31asses indulge their sporting blood in oastimes which would not be tolerated in a country having a Society For the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. On fete days in the smaller towns and villages which can't support a bull Sght a favorite sport is to hang a sleek fat duck by the feet by a wire or rope stretched between two trees or posts on the village plaza. The head of the duck bangs just out of reach of a man on horseback, and the "sport" consists in riding under the poor duckat full speed, grabbing it by the neek and pulling its head off. A duck's neck will stretch a great deal, and it requires a firm hold and a determined jerk to yank off the prize. The duck frequently resists the efforts of half a dozen riders before parting with its head. The horsemen sometimes miss the duck entirely, lose their bal ance and roll out of the saddle into the dust. This furnishes fun for everybody except the duck. The game may also be played on the water, in which case the line on which the duck hangs is stretched between the masts of two anchored boats, and row boats are substituted for horses. In another country game a chicken is buried ali73 in +he ground to the neck, its headl alone being visible. The men who enter the game are blindfolded and armed with a machete, a long knife used in cutting cane. They are walked around in confusing circles for a few minutes and then released for an attack on the chicken's head. The one who cuts off the head clean in the fewest number of strokes wins the prize. In default-of a bull fight the Cubans indulge in a bull-baiting game on which money is wagered7 m sed in an inclosure which is too small to give him much play and from which he can not escape. Any one who wishes may enter a dog to fight the bull. The dog which succeeds in securing a neck or nose hold on the bull and brings him to the ground wins the game. From half a dozen to 15 dogs are often entered against one bull and their owners bet large sums on their candidates. Al though all the dogs worry and fight the bull, and consequently all are respon sible for his ultimate overthrow, yet only the dog which actually brings him to earth is the winner.-St. Louis Post Dispatch.
