Drink artesian water and keep it off. Mr. Robert C. Plowden, of the Jordan section, is in very bad health. Envy is blind, and knows nothing ex cept to depreciate the excellencies of others. Base balls and bats at R. B. Lor yea's. The editor is in Columbia attending the State Convention which is in session to day. MissBelle Galluchat, after an extended visit to Portsmouth, Va., has returned home. "Red Rooster" smoking and chewing to bacco,5c a twist, at Brockinton's. The man who forfeits his self respect loses the best friend that he ever had in this world. Thomas & Bradham has a flowing well and the water is said to contain medical properties. You need not be shocked at the bad con duct of other people unless your own is blameless. Doctors J. F. Geiger and Abe Weinberg attended the State Dental Associati-n in Columbia last week. . If you want a nice cool drink these hot days, call on J. C. Boyd. There is no way of making a permanent success in this world without giving an honest equivalent for it. Mrs. J. O. Gough left last Friday for Wake Forest, ;N. C. her former home.where she will spend the summer. For writing paper, pens and ink, at the lowest prices, go to Brockinton's. Captain D. J. Bradham went to Orange burg last Monday to attend a meeting of the Claflin College trustees. A subscription is being taken up to put a flowing well on the street in front of the court house and we hope it will succeed. For that torpid liver try "Thedford's Black Draught" at Brockinton's. Mrs. Sallie D'Ancona, who has been in Eanning visiting her parents Mr. and Mrs. M. Levi, returned to her home in Chicago last Sunday. The lIttle store next door to S. A. Rigby's has been completed and it. is certainly a credit to the mechanical skill of Mr. WV. R. White, the builder. Milk shakes, soda ~water and ice cream at 3. 0. Boyd's Maaning will soon have-plenty of brick, there are.two brickyards here in full blast. We are informed that before fall three new brick stores will be erected. J. D. Gough has opened a soda water fountain at Brockinton's drug store. Parties wanting to take stock in the tobacco warehouse can do so as the subscription books are open. See notice in another column. One of our young business men tells us that he has made up his mind to take unto himself a wife and that the happy event will come off with the falling of the leaves. Died last Sunday, at his home in the Pork, Mr. D. W. DuRant, aged about forty eight years. The funeral took placethe next day at the family burying ground. Rev. James McDowell officiated. Go to Brocdinton's drug store for soda water, milk shakes ,and cocoa-cola. Pure fruit syrups always on hand. General E. W. Moise, of Sumter, has ac cepted an invitation to deliver the aunnal address at the closing exercises of the Man ning Collegiate Institute which takes place on the evening of the 2gh inst. Complaint has been made to us about boys hitching cows to the bridges over Black River. The boys go in swimming and leave the cows on the bridges, thereby obstructing the way and starving the cows. Mrs.|Matilda Bagnal, widow of the late J. Belton Bagnal, Esq., of this county, died on the 13th inst., and was burried the next day at Brewing ton church. Rev. James McDowell candu':ted her funeral services. SotUe of the newspapers seem to think the George I. Lesesne tiish catch is a fish lie, but they are mistaken. Our informa tion camne from Mr. Lesesne himself who is a professional fisherman and- would scorn to tell a fish-lie. Destroy those flies! We have in stock tanglefoot and poison fly paper, also fly traps. R. B. Loryea, the druggist. When a lie once gets into the world, it is astonishing how hard it is to get it out. You may lUeat it about the head until it seems to have given up the ghost, and then, the next day meet, it on the street as healthy as ever. How about that pair of spectacles you are needing so bad ? Now is your time to get them at Brockinton's. When the air is filled with sun-light. there is no opportunity for the deeds of darkness. When the sou! has tasted of the bread of life, it cannot hunger for the stones of the wilderness. Whezd God is all to us, the world is nothing. The lumber-yard of Mr.R.L.Felder, near Panola, was destroyed by fire recently and about $1,000 worth of lumber was consumed in the flames. No insurance. The fire is supposed to have been set by some one. Every white man must register. A white man who will not register now, certainly does not realize the importance of the mat ter. We can not through the columns of this paper give reasons for urging white men to regis ter,but let it sufficeto say it is a duty that no trzie man should treat with indifference. Come to Manning and take a drink of pure water from Thomas & Bradhamn's artesian well. The water comes from a depth about 400 feet and is pronounced to be perfectly pure. The flow is constant at the rate of about two gallons per minute. The probability is that other wells will soon be bored here. Preserve your sight by having your eyes properly fitted with a pair of "Cry~stal Lenses." Spectacles or eyeglasses. R. B. .ryne the druggist. The young ladies tea club at present is in a comatose state, but a little later in the season new life will be put in the club and we may look for some fun, provided the editor is not bribed with tarts. We have been promised some interesting details from a member and it will take a greater inducement than tarts to keep us quite. Mr. E. L. Wilkins has been over to Dlar lington inspecting the tobacco warehouse with a view of building here. He is a miz of indomitable energy and he will ist the tobacco warehouse project through :o success. If Manning had many such citi zens as Mr. Wilkins, we would soon b asking Sumter to turn herself into a truck farm to furnish our population with vvg' tables. Any communications to this paper op posing the candidates for office who are an nounced in these coiuwns must be signed by the true name of the writer, and they must be couched in gentlemanly language. In each case the article will be published over the name of the writer, and the editor reserves the right to reject such coummuni cations as he thinks proper without ex planation. We have refused to publish a co:ununi cation with reference to a case to be tried in the coming court, first, because it was not signed by the true name of the writer, and second, because it had a tendiency to create a feeling in the case. We do not allow the use of the columns of this paper to prosecute or defend parties charged with crime, the court house is the lace and the legal fraternity are the ones to attend to that business. Last Sunday afternoon a seven-year-old son of Esan Levine, of the Fork, was going from Albert Frierson's house home, and Sam Tomlin met him in the road; young Levine had on his father's overcoat. Tom lin thinking the object he met was an imp from the lower regions, became frightened. drew his pistol and shot, the ball taking effect in young Levine's back. All the parties are colored. Tais is one of the evil results of young bloods carrying pistols. The county treasurer of Chester county has besn systematically rob bing the people by overcharging them when they went to pay their taxes. He had the reputation of be ing one of the best treasurers in the State, and was always among the very first to make his settlements. The State nor county do not suffer by this man's wrong-doing, but his friends who gave him the office six teen years ago were the ones he robbed. A base ball team from Sumter came to Manning last Friday and played a match game with a scrub nine of this place. The score was 25 to 16 in favor of Sumter. The game was not finished on account of Sum ter quiting when they found the Manning boys gaining on them. The local team played at a great disadvantage, because they were not organized and had not practiced together and until the Sumter men replaced their players with giants the Manning boys did them up badly. The Sumters made the most runs and they blowed about it furiously. but when the next came is played our boys will take the starch out of these windy dudes. "Pick Leaf'' smoking tobacco, 10c a package, at Brockinton's. A storm swept through Sherman 'Texas last Friday and in the neigh borhood of 200 people were killed. On the list of killed appears the name of R. L. Burns and two children, but we do not believe this is the Burns that used to live in Manning. His post office used to be Bastrope, but re cently we received a card from him notifying us to send his paper to Halettsville. Both Bastrope and Halettsville are several hundred miles from Sherman.IThe account in the News and Courier gave the name "R. L. Burns and two children," but in the Columbia Register it was "I. L Burns, two children, Joseph aged 3 years and Grover aged 10 years." The Burns that left here carried to Texas with him three children and all of them were girls if our memory serves us right. We hope by the next issue of the Times to have posi tive information on the subject. BUCKLEN'S ARMICA SALVE. Caillouette, Druggist, Beaversville, Ill., says: "To Dr. King's New Discovery I owe "my life. Was taken with La Grippe and tried all the physicians for miles about, but of no avail and was given up- and told I could not live. Having Dr. King's New Discovery iu my store I sent for a bottle and began its use and from the first dose began to get better, and after using three bottles was up and about again. It is worth its weight in gold. We won't keep store or house without it." Get a free trial at R. B. Loryea's drug store. CURE FOR HEADACHE. As a remedy for all forms of headache Electric Bitters has proved to be- the very best. It effects a permanent cure and the most dreaded habitual sick headaches yield to its influence. We urge all who are af ficted to procure a bottle, and give this remedy a fair trial. In cases of habitual constipation Electric Bitters eures by giving the needed tone to the bowels, and few cases long resist the use of this medicine. Try it once. Large bottles only 50 cents at R. B. Loryea's drug store. The following communication was crowded out last week: Manning Times:-It was my pleas ure, last night, to listen to the lec ture of Dr. John L. Easterling, deliv ered' at the Institute hall. The sub jut of the lecture, was, The Gorill; a subject though old still susceptible of new treatment. The lecturer in discussing in a general way, the group of the simian genus of animals to which the gorilla belongs, took di rect issue with the transmutation doctrina of Dr. Darwin, and said that such.doctrine was as utopian as was that of ancient alchymy. I was glad to see our friend-the lecturer-knock down and stamp) on the darwinian theory of evolution and batter it so badly, that, Darwin if living, would hardly be able to resuscitate his pro geny. . I have, at times, felt some solici tude as to the probable truthfulness of the doctrine which claims that we are kinsmen of this ferocious member of the anthropoid race; have, some times, when seeing a small monkey holding out its little cap for contri butions for the hand-organ-grinder, felt that it might not be amiss for me to offer to shake hands with one whose remote ancestors may, in the misty ages of the loniig ago, have been kinsmen of mine; but since hearing our friend's lecture I am glad that I refrained from doing so, as the matter has been cleared up to my satisfaction. The Doctor was greeted with rounds of applause, and was at his best last night; bearing on the lappel of his coat, some beautiful fiowers, his face wreathed with smiles and beaming with kindness, our old friend was the same Dr. Easterling I have known so long and for whom there is, and will always be, a warm place in my heart. SANDY GROVE SIFTINGS. Sandy Grove, May 11th 1896-Mr. Editor. Again we make another effort to find a few items for your paper. Some of our Salem people are still wanting a new county over here. We heard one prominent gentleman say he would rather pay $10.00 more taxes per year for the next ten years than not have the new county. We have the territory if we have the capital or property and the ma jority of the people want it. Well, let's have it, and then the talk about the so-called Mason & Dixon's line in the county (Black River) and that Salem has but little or no showing in county affairs will cease. The corn crops generally are look ing well. Mr. J. Walter McFaddin has the finest we have seen. Cotton in some places is getting up rather slow on account of dry weather. WVe have had but very little rain in te immediate vicinity, yet a good any are setting tobacco by using ater when setting. Plants thus set ae living remlarkably well. Potatoes planted from slips are etting up well. We see only four candidates an ounced in their column. Is there oly four who would like to have a lice of pie. Come out boys and ake the thing interesting. We ant to see if there will be any place eft in the field for poor Sam. You et he would like a small slice for e needs it. His soup is getting so ain that it will slash like pot-liquor in a poor dog. Mr. WV. D. Gambre has been visit ig Virginia, the mother of five residents. Mr. WV. M. Parrott and wife of ake City, have been visiting Mr. XV. H. Curry and family, of Sandy rove. Capt. J. M1. Knight we are glad to ay,is improving again. Mrs. D. H. Weich is quite ill. Dysentery seems to be very pre alent. Three colored children in ne family died lasL week. Mr. J. D. Rodgers is erecting a ew steam gin on Mr. R. E. Smith's lace, which will be conv.enient for tose growing cotton this year. Mr. Rodgers is a man of several ears' experience in the mill busi ess. SAM TAimR. eIr Joseph Barnby. "Although Sir Joseph Barnby be longed to the pedantic school," says The Saturday Review, "the iron of its hains never entered into his soul, and t heart he seems to have been some hing of a Bohemian, fonder of the en oyable rather than the merely correct oth in life and in art. He did not com ose much, but he was the writer of ome songs which had a vogue, of the ost popular part song ever written, and of some church music which touches the high water mark of its kind. It is ard to see who will take his place." Girdled by a Railroad. The American firm which finished the connecting link of 50 miles in the chain of railroads encircling the island f Jamaica performed a great feat in ngineering. The road runs entirely hrough mountains and morass. It has 7 tunnels, 193 girder bridges, 13 via ducts and 11 tower bridges. It is said that no such tremendous obstacleE were ever met by engineers in a 50 mile stretch. The cost averaged more th~an 00, 000 a mile. [here are Drugs and Drugs !
