chase. Two negroes come into town with

Prof. F. A. Rice, our popular teacher,
went to Manning last Friday to stand an
era minattion, and finishing the examination
early in the afternoon, concluded to walk
back rather than wait for the train. fie

The Republican Congressional cominit
tee for this district has issued an address
to the Republican voters to poll a full vote
for the nominee of that party, and for the
purpose of "enilightening" the voters tiere
will be a public meeting in Manning on
next Friday.
Tbe Republican nominee is Rev. Joshua
E. Wilson, a colored preacher of Florence.
and he will urge in addition to voting for
him to succeed John L. McLaurin, that his
race cast their votes against the proposed
constitutional convention. The Republi
cans claim that if there is a constitutional
convention the colored race will be dis
franchised. So we may expect a grand
pow-wow here next Friday.
Among the speakers expected are Ed
muned H. Deas. who gained somie mstine
tion recently by being found in the "ectazy
quilt caucus" which mevt for the purpose of
nominating a State ticket. but failed to
specify. When Dea was discovered in the
caucus of course he was put out, but then
that crowd and Deas are row together in
the fight to defeat t e constitutional con
vention. Whether Deats's business in that
caucus was to make a deal has not leaked
out, but the cauens after De%, left did
adopt a resolution opposing the convention
and now Deus is stumping the district
among his people to turn ont and poll a
full vote backing up the resolutions. The
situation is, the friends of that -lid-no:h
ing caucus." togethee with the Republicans
and Dr. Sampson Pope (provid;ing he does
not again bolt the track), will fight against
the success of one of the main planks of
the Reform platform, i. e., the constitution
al convention.
The grand political circus combination
now exhibiting in the State is headed by
Deas, Pope, and Chairnan Carwile, and it
is these men who are solicitous for the fu
ture welfare of the colored vote.
The call for the rally here next Friday
has ignored Dr. Pope entirely, but that is a
small matter, as he does not stand on
formalities.
