LOUIS APPELT, Editor.
Wednesday, May 16, 1894.
The Reformers are on record
pledged to a Constitutional Conven
tion. This should be kept in mind,
and the voters are to see to it that
the pledge is faithfully adhered to.
Clarendon needs a first-class busi
ness man for County Supervisor.
This position should be filled by
qualification, and not by popularity.
It is often the ase that a jolly good
fellow is a bad manager and incom
petant fcr business.
We need a better system for our
public schools. We need a system of
better roads. Let us send men to
the Legislature that will work for
these things. The present school
system is a farce, and the present
system of working the highways is a
humbug and a waste of money.
If every county in the State will
look after the interest of the Reform
Movement as will Clarendon the
National Club organizers can go
ahead and the result will be that the
Reform Movement will show up
about as much strength in the com
ing primary as it did in the last.
If General Butler has three hun
dred white supporters in Clarendon
county we do not know where they
are. There are some men that will
not vote for either Tillman or Butler,
and if forced-to vote for one or the
other, although opposed to Tillman,
will vote for him in preference to
Butler.
The main thing to look out for in
the coming election is to see that
every candidate for the Legislature
pledges himself publicly to support
B. Tillman for the Senate. There
must not be any "if" nor "and"
about it. No man can go to the
Legislature from this county who. will
not vote for Ben Tillman, if we know
the sentiment of a large majority of
Clarendon's white voters.
. A Correction,
Above all things a newspaper
should avoid saying anything that
will do the slightett injustice, and
when it finds that it has done an
injustice it should undo the wrong
as soon as possible. From informa
tion received we based an item last
week about an arrest that was made
in this town, and we said the arrest
ed party was .a countryman, while
town men are allowed to go unmo
lested. The language used was not
intended to arouse a spirit of hostility
against the town, nor was it our pur
pose to reflect in the slightest upon
the town authorities. Our attention
was drawn to'the item by a personal
friend, the next morning after the
paper appeared, and after hearing
his views, we became convinced that
our item could be construed as a slap
at the council, and might have the
effect of bringing about a spirit of
* enmity among the country people
*against those of the town. Such was
not our object, aswe bear no il will
towards any of the members of the
council; in fact we voted for every
on- * them in the recent town elec
tionj, and instead of placing obstacles
in the way of their aministratin
we would only be too glad to render
,them all the assistance we can.
The Times has always worked
faithfully for the town's interest, and
we do not at this late day propose to
encourage anything that would do
the town an injury. .All that we have
is here, and if no other motive
prompted us, self interest certainly
would cause us to labor for Manning's
welfare and prosperity. We propose
to give the news, and in doing so
should we make a misstatement we
will gladly make the proper amends
when our attention is called thereto.
*We have the right, and it isour priv
ilege, to comment on all public mat
*ters; at the same time we will en
deavor to avoid doing an injustice,
either to an individual, official, or a
body of officials. As already stated,
*our little item was based upon infor
mation, but later, after the issue of
the paper, we learned the facts were
not represented to us correctly at
first, and in justice 'to the colored
policeman, who made the arrest, we
will say that our subsequent infor
-mation was that the policeman and a
kinsman of the arrested man tried to
get the man to desist from his course
and go home, that after persuasion
and repeated warnings the arrest was
made. We are satisfied our council
would not knowingly allow the police
to show partiality in making arrests,
and ifa ease of partiality is reported
to them they will investigate the mat
ter and dismiss-from service the po
liceman found gnilty.
This correction was written volun
tarily, and in a spirit of what we
deem justice.
