All ages have been taken, and there ap pears to be a special voice of Provirtence in so great a sorrow upon our people. The young may die; the old must die; and all must or should be ready to respond to this summons to go over to the great majority. The Surrmours' Association. At twelve o'cloch, noon, last Monday, about fifty Confederate veteraus met in the court house for the pnrpose of organizing a survivors' association. Capt. D. J. Brad ham called the meeting to order, and moved that Hon. Joseph F. Rhame take the chair. The motion was unanimously carried. Mr. Rhame upon taking the chair made a speech, thanking the survivors for the honor of electing him their presiding officer. He feelingly alluded to the valor and devotion of the Confederate soldi'rs to the lost cause of the South, and the great need of sonic means of accurately and truthfully perpet nating the history of the heroism displayed by so many on the battle field and through out the war. He spoke at length. At the close of his speech, Rev. Jas. McDowell was requested to open the meeting with prayer. S. A. Nettles was appointed secretar-y. A roll of those present was then made up, and fifty names were enrolled. Capt. Bradhan.imade a speech in which he men tioned several war incidents, and said he wanted the deeds of heroism spoken of while the heroes were yet living, and no better occasions could exist than at these reunions. A motion was made that a committee he appointed to formulate and propose a plan of permanent organization of the Confeder ate suldiers in. this county, to report to an adjourned meeting to be held the first Mon day in July. The motion wvas carried, and on another mction Mr. Rhume's name was added to the committee as chairman. The committee is: J. F. Rhame, Rev. JIas. McDowell, D. J. Bradhami, T. M. Keels, R . H. Grihin, J. C. Johnson. The Chairman then alluded to the recent death of Maj. Lesesne, and he and Messrs. T. M. Keels and D. J. Bradham made eulo gistic speeches. The committee on perma nent organization was instructed to prepar-e suitable resolutions pn his death, to be pre sented at the next meeting. The meeting then adjourned. Summerton News. "A stitch in time saves nine," and if you take Hood's Sarsaparilla now it may save months of future possible sickness. News from Sandy Grove. Sisor GROVE, April 27.- We are having some as dry weather now as we had wet one a month ago. The farmeis fear the stands of cotton will be very poor. I agree with your humorous and instruc tive correspondent Tom in denounc ing the lien and homestead laws. I look upon them as the worst evil the laboring class has to contend with. It is a retlee tion upon a farmer's dignity and hcnesty to require a lien or bill0 of sale of him. pThe merchants certainly doubt his honesty when they ask it; but they say they must treat all alike. Why not repeal the obnox os laws, and let his word be his lien, his property his security ? I am not in favom of repealing one without the other, for ,we have some dishonest men. A short tine ago I asked a member of the General As sembly why they did not repeal those laws. He asiked mae if I favored their repeal.] told him I did. H~e said1 the reason was there were more that did not favor it thau did. My simple opinion is that the major. *ity of the farmers favor it if the nmajority -of the members do not. Bjrother farmiers -what plan can wre fall upon to get this enr-e - removed ? I would like to have Tom -'s ho -has shown us the evil so clearly, to s.4 u how to get rid of it. Mr. S. N. Johnson and Mr Daniel Mi ois of Sandy Grove. are said to have the fines corn in Salem. 31r and Mrs. S. F. Cuiry are visiting reia tis in Florence county.
