The express wagon was completely demol
ished last Thursday night. The horse at
tached became unmanageabe, the driver was
thrown from his seat, and a general stam

The ladies of the Suiinerton Baptist
Church desire to finish paying for an organ
and some furniture purchased for their
church, and to do so will on next Friday
evening (9th inst.) give an entertainment.
All are cordially invited to attend. A
pleasant evening is promised.
The Augusta Exposition opens to-morrow
and closes Dec. 15th. Round trip tickets
good for five days and including a free ad
mission to the Exposition grounds, from
Manning and return will be SG.00. It
strikes us as a little too high to attract, inas
much as the fare was to have been one cent
a mile. s would have been a better price.
There will be a meeting of Damon Lodge.
Knights of Pythias, Friday night, Nov,
16th. at 8 o'clock sharp. The meeting will
be held in Furstenburg Hall. Officers will
be installed, and the endowment or insur
ance rank will be organized. A full atten

The road will be completed to the mill in

Charleson's Gala Week comes of ei wex
after'next, beginning Nov. 19th. Charles
ton is determined to attract a crowd, and
the number of visitors will probably be
larger than last year. Everybody is going!
The merchants have contributed thousands
of dollars to make the week a success, and
we have no doubt but that it will be a grand
auscesa. The railroad fare will be nonunal,
about a oent a mile each way.
TIhe State Fair this year promises to be
one of the best and most successful in its
history. It begins next Monda., Nov. 12th
end continues through Friday. The rail
-:oad fare, including a free ticket to the Fair
stounds, is $1.8 from Mianning-sand return;
:91.90 from Wilsons and Foreston and re
turn: and $2.00) from Greeleyville. This is
cheiap enough to induce a large crowd to go
fronm this county. Fire works, horse racing.

Two colored yo-1ths who revel in the
names of Thomas Alexander Cooper and
James Henry Senex were up before ria)
,Justice Wilson last Saturday. Senex,who 15
older and larger thtan Cooper, had the night
before, on account of personal animosities,
made an assault with a brick on Cooper
The brick was strong and hard, but whet
thrown with such violence against Cooper'i
forehead, it was- smashed. as was also th4
skin on Cooper's head. Dr. Brown .sewed
up Cooper's wound, which, while it wa:
painful, was not eeriouis, and did not pre
vent his appearance the next day at th.

Some negro thieves went to Mr. A. La
Motte Lesesne's place Sunday night,- Oct

Farmers' Meeting.
The farmers held.a meeting last Saturday
in the Court House. Capt. D. J. Bradham
read the constitution and by-laws of the
Farx ers' Alliance.
Col. Jas. E. Tindal then mado a good,
strong, practical talk in favor of establishing
a county alliance, urging the need, es
pecialy from a social point of view, of such
an organization in this county.
Capt. Branham followed with a sensible
talk on the practical and pecuniary benehts
that the farmers would derive from organ
izing such alliances.
Maj. L. H. DesChamps urged upton the '
farmers the necessity of such an orgaumza
tion, and believed that it would result in a.
great saving in money to the farmers. Ie
hoped the farmers would organize into an
alliance.
Mr. C. R. F. Baker moved that the presi
dent of the meeting appoint some one in
each election precinct to canvass the county
for the purpose of organizing r fart:ers

Found the Stolen Ox.
On last Sunday night some one stole an
ox from Pensy Young, a colored washer
woman of our town. Her children went out
at daylight Monday morning to feed the
beast, when, as they say, "hit cum up mis
sin." Just then a peal of lamentation rang
out on the morning air that alarmed that
part of our town, but presently silence was
restoredl and the dusky forms of Pensy and
her husband were slowly receding through
the mist down the Kingstree road, as they
bent over the forked imprints of their horned;

KINGSTE, Nov. 2.--Tlie jury in the
Sc::anton riot case failed to agree last night,
and Judge Pressley resolved the deadlock
into a mistrial. This is the first failure of
a jury to agree upon a verdict here in years.

Work on Eutawville Railroad is pro
gressing, tiotwithstanding unforeseen de
lavs. It is estimated that it will require
from three to four weeks longer to complete
the bridge across Santee River and restore it
to position. It is also expected that the
engineer corps will finish locating the line
to Sumter tomorrow. The grading of the
road has been completed to Panola, leaving
only the fifteen miles between that place
and Sumter to be graded. This section will
be graded by contract, and the engineers
will then locate the line to Cheraw. When
the road has been built to Cheraw it will
connect there with John Robinson's Sea
board Air Line system. giving a shorter
line from Charleston to New York than by
any of the now existing routes.-Kews and
