Alexander, of this place, and Miss Minnie Brown, of Marion, are to be married June 20th. -Anniversary exercises of the Thompson Literary Society to-morrow (Thursday) evening at 8J o'clock. -Charleston is enthused on the subject of a million dollar hotel. About $150,000 has already been subscribed. -CoL T. H. Connors, who has been in Manning several weeks under medical treat ment, returned to his Lome yesterday. -Rev. A. Nettls, of the S. C. Conference, celebrated his eightieth birth day last Mon-. day. He has''been preaching fifty-two years. -Mrs. N. Stanea and Mrs. P. M. Wind ham ars'exttemielf ill at their -homes, and very little hope is entertained for their re coery: -The two story building next the TIXES office is being fitted up, and about the 15th Mr. Alexander will move his stock of jewel ry into it. -Mr. D.?. Mahoney informs us that cotton in the Sammy Swamp section has the sore shin, caused by the recent cool spell and wet weather. -Ice will bereafter be kept.for sale at my store, and can be had st all times and in any quantities to suit purchasers. M. Ka liaky, opposite Court House. -We have received from Mr. Ben Harvin, from Mr. Jos. H. - Montgomery, and from others, beautiful invitations to the S. C. Col ee commencement and Society celebra tions, June 25, 26, md 27. -. J. Winn, of Sumter, advertises all kinds of spring and summer clothing and underwear, at reduced prices. Mr.-Winn is too well known for'-sto saya word in his favor. He thoroughly understands his bus iness, and when he tells you any thing, you can depend on it. -We are in receipt of an invitation from Miss Lily May Ivy, formerly of this place, to attend the commencement exercises of Sunny South Femz.le Seminary, Atlanta, Ga. Miss Lily expects next week to enter the Cincinnati Conservatory of Music, to complete her music education. -Advertising pays. Mr. B. A. Johnson tells us that lst week after -the notice of grain cradles for sale at M. Levi's, there was a rush for cradles, and in a day or two all were sld. But theni Levi is not to be eaught napping, and cradles or any thing else you want for sale at M. Levi's. -Triailustice John S. Wilson tried a ase last Monday purporting to be a prose ction by Bob Davis against Archie Con yers and Harry Eardon, all colored, for trespass or entry after notice. The case was a muddy one, and the evidence showed that a woman was at the bottom of it. The jury in a few minutes returned a verdict of not guilty. Mr. I. C. Galluchat and Mr. B,8S. Dinking appeared for the defense. ..-The Manning Guards are making pre parations for a mammoth time the ba~s ss et pienic in Foreston next The Foreston people, too, are doing all they can to make the Guards and their friends have a good time. A base ball1 game in the afternoon isto be onae of the attractons5. Dancing and othet amuse Ients will be the order of the day, A num her one good dinner is expected. The closing exercises of the Manning Academy will be Wednesday and Thursday, June 5th and 6th. Wednesday evening, at 8 o'olock, the reg ular exhibition exercises will begin, consist ing of recitations, charades, dialogues, songs, music, etc., and a prize contest for oratory. A gold medal will be presented, at the close of the contest, to the one who best acquits himself. Thursday evening, at 8.1 o'clock, the Thompson Literary Society will celebrate its anniversary, with a recitation by Miss Leila Galluchat; essays by Misses Susie Lesesne and Maud Davis; a debate, "Was the abolition of slavery a benefit or a curse to the South ?" by Messrs. Fred Lesesne, Edward McClellan. Chas. R. Harvin, Jr., and Clarendon W. Barron; an oration by Mr. Harvey W. Mitchum; and a literary aa dress by B. Pressley Barron, Esq. At the close of the Society exercises, the first honor gold medal and the other prizes will be presented. The halls of the Academy will then be open for the annual reception. The years that have elapsed since the close.of the civil war have served to obliter ate all sectional feeling, and a united and prosperous nation joins in keeping green the graves of all its beloved dead. Death of a Wonderful Old Man. PrrrrzE, May 28.-Last week there died in this township a famous character of upper Clarendon, an aged white man, named Robert R. Thames, (Timms,) but he was familiarly known by everybody as "old Bob Royal." This man had the gifts of a Mucausen, and. his stories showed an amount of imagination and inventive gen ius that is not often met with. Had he been a man of education, he would have won both "fortune and fame" by his pen. As it was, he was widely known on ac count of his amusing tales. He had been living in this township for about a year and a half, and was probably the oldest white man in it, as he was88S. -Deaths. -Belle, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Jasper Timmons, of Gaildu, died Saturday last, aged about six years. -Mr. Henry F. Windham died at his res idence last Saturday. A very large congre gation attended his funeral, which was preached in the Methodist church Sunday morning by Rev. H. M. Mood. --William Johnson was on the 23rd of May accidently killed by Ned Witherspoon, both colored, and living in the DesChamps's neighborhood. Trial Justice Mahoney held the inquest. . .
