THE MANNINM TIME. Wednesday, April II, 1888. LOCAL AND OTHERWISE. The Toxa is only $1.50 a year. There is no finer fish than shad, and Manning has been well suppliedthis spring. The S.C. Railway bridge across the Ed isto river, ii Barnwell county, was totally destroyed by fire last Thursday. A tramp, while stealing a ride on the Charleston and Savannah Railroad last week, fell off and was killed at Yemassee. Greenville, S. An enthusiastic railroad meeting was held in Cheraw last week, to consider the building of this road. The State Pension Board has so far ap proved 877 pensions, and rejected 410. A good many of those rejected will be recon sidered and approved. The board esti mates that the $50,000 appropriated will this year pay 1,428 pensions, and when this limit is reached, it is thought the board will not consider any others. The applications are considered in the order in which they are filed, and those who were slow in mak ing applications will not likely rc :eive any consideration this year. A WOLAN'S DISCOVERY. "Another wonderful discovery has been made and that too by a lady of this county. Disease fastened its clutches upon her and for seven years she withstood its severest tests, but her vital organs were undermind ed and death seemed imminent. For three months she coughed incessantly and could not sleep. She bought of us a bottle of Dr. King's New Discovery for Consumption and was so much relieved on taking first dose that she slept all night and with one bottle has been miraculously cured. Her name is Mrs. Luther Lutz." Thus write W. C. Hamrick & Co., of Shelby, N. C.-Get a free trial bottle at Dinkins & Co.'s Drug Store. THE VERDICT U NANIMOUS W. The Chinese authorities were officially no tifled of the last eclipse of the moon, .and were instructed what to do when the event took place. They were to wear Court dress, beat gongs, and save the moon from being swallowed up by the sun, as usual, as long as the moon was above the horizon. When she disappeared they were to make one low obesiance, but need not bother to save her any longer when she was below the horizon. THE FA MITY EDUCATOR. A terrible wind, bail, and rain storm visited the vicinity of Fishirig Creek Factory, Chester county, Mon day, April 2d. The new Lewisville Academy, a two-story frame struc ture, was completely demolished. Reports say that the bail was two feel deep in places, and that the rain was so heavy as to float the heaviest loge from hillsides down into the bottom lands. No lives were lost. Chairman Brayton has issued a call for a Republican Convention to meet at Columbia on Tuesday, May 1, tc elect four delegates at large to the National Convention. The fence in front of the Orphan age was put up of common old-field pine. It was put up in 1875,thirteen years ago. Other fences put up the same time of better lumber have been replaced twice, and even three times, but that one, is still in good condition. The only secret is,-it was kept white-washed. Moral, it pays to keep your fencing white washed.--Clinton Enterprise. A man who wants to go into the liquor business in Florida has a hard road to travel. In the first place, he has to get three hundred signatures to his application, and the names must be published in the county pa per. He then goes before the Court, where his character is thoroughly sifted, and if his application is ap proved he pays a license fee of $450, divided equally among the State, the county and the town or city in which he proposes to sell. The Postmaster at La dy Lake Fla. When a man has been snatched, as it were, from the very jaws of death, and given a new lease of healthy life by means of a simple remedy, it is natural for him to be enthusiastic in the praise of the means which deliv ered him from deadly peril, and in his gladness of heart he is anxious to let the world participate in his joy, and he will spread the "good news" in order that others, who may be in similar peril, may be restored to life and renewed health by employing the same means which gave him the victory. This is again exemplified in the following letter which the Swift Specific Company bave received from Mr. B. HE Byrd, who is the postmnas tr at Lady Lake, Sumter county, Florida, as well as a leading mer chant of that place. Under date of May 4, 1887, he writes : Gentlemen-Allow me to congrat ulate and return thanks for the won derful success your S. S. S. has prov ed in my ease. You remember about a year ago I wrote to you in refer ence to my case. I was treated by three skillful physicians, but with no relief. I suffered a great deal of un easiness, besides a great deal of pain. I must say that the contents of one dozen bottles of S. S. S. has almost removed a eancer from my face, which no doubt would have hurried me to my grave. I shall always keep a good supply in my store, and urge the sale of the same. I do think it is wonderful and has no equal. I am yours truly, B. Hi Bxian. Treatise on Blood and Skin Diseas es mailed free. THE SwIm SPEcmeI Co., Drawer 3, Atlanta, Ga. The Defective Pension Act. It now looks as if the Legislature at the last session cut out a pretty big job when they proposed to pension all the crippled Confederates and the widows of soldiers killed in the war. It looks like child's play to appropri ate only $50,000 for this purnose. Some of our best citizens, who were good soldiers, doubt the wisdom of the act. Some go so far as to say the very inception of the movement was a mistake, and the present Act is very faulty. From this county one hundred and eighty-one applications have, been sent to Columbia, and twenty-five are ready to go to-night. There are-over two hundred more in the clerk's office to be acted on. The applications from this county alone will run up to about five hundred. Suppose half of these are rejected, it will require $1,250 a month or $15, 000 a year to pay the others. Sup. pose that our dependent soldiers are twice as numerous, as they are in other counties, it would take $255, 000 a year to pay them. Out of the one hundred and eighty-one appli cants sent down ninety-five are wid ows and seventy-six are men.-par ,aniug . N wm and Uourier. DYSPEPSIA. The NEv Yonx EvEncia PosT will begin, on the 3d of May, to issue a weekly edition, having for its princi pal aim the promotion of Revenue Reform, which has become the para mount issue in national politics. The existence of an actual surplus in the Treasury estimated to reach $140, 000,000 on the 30th of June, 1888, and the further increase thereof under preseht laws, are a menace to all busi ness interests, and a direct incentive to wastefulness and corruption in the appropriations of public money. The attention of the people having been strongly drawn to this subject by the President in his last annual message, the need of information and popular enlightenment on questions of reve nue and taxation has been increasing ly felt in all parts of the country.
